“Fantastic”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We booked this hotel through BA as part of a deal for a 3 day break in Edinburgh.

The staff were helpful and polite throughout our stay and the room was immaculate, The TV broke once but was fixed within 10 mins by a member of staff.

The location is excellent, within walking distance of almost everything you would want to see. We only used a bus to get to the Zoo.

There are two in house restaurants (The Heights and Metro Bar) both have excellent food. We preferred the Metro Bar as it has more "Pub Food" and its price range is more reasonable.

All round we would highly recommend this hotel if you are staying in Edinburgh

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the castle!!!

Had a lovely stay here the weekend just gone and would definitely recommend. The location is perfect, so close to everything which meant we only had to get a taxi once. Lovely staff who are helpful with any questions you have. Hotel was lovely and Edinburgh as always was perfect. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a room with a view of Edinburgh castle definitely worth it.

We should have stayed here 3 nights but it ended up as 2 nights for our wedding anniversary. Due to the hotel being overbooked we really seemed to have pulled the short straw and saw the staff working under very strained conditions.

First we were given a disabled room 3012 with duct tape mending the carpet, stained and chipped walls, stained furniture, missing picture as shown by two screws in the wall and an unpleasant stain down the side of the bed.

We were moved to room 3026. This was a larger room however was equally stained and tatty and by no stretch of the imagination 4*! This room overlooks the back of the hotel with a view of the concrete car park and skip. It is south facing and is incredibly hot, we were amazed when we checked and found the one radiator was off. If you open the dilapidated windows you get to listen to the smokers conversations below in the courtyard and can smell the smoke, this is great if people decide to drink late. :’(

The room could do with air-con being fitted and a deep clean and refurbishment. A safe and fridge would also have been nice, I kind of expect that at a 4* hotel as a minimum. What really took us aback was discovering the security spy hole was missing, so you could look into our room from the corridor! This was temporarily fixed with a sticker and then replaced the next morning.

We were offered an “upgrade” to a castle view superior room. However we turned it down as when we walked in the cold that greeted us and noise from outside made us think a window was open. Also the room was smaller and equally tired and tatty along with a ripped bed valance. We really couldn't believe we were seeing this at a 4 star hotel!

The rooms we were shown were by no means 4*. You would be better off spending less and staying at a Travelodge! This is devastating when you have paid more for a special occasion to have some luxury.

Breakfast is an awful spectacle, I think I agree with other reviews they could do with just having a buffet style breakfast. As they have no control over the seating times of their guests, so they can all turn up at once like Saturday morning! We queued for a table to be cleaned and to be seated. We were seated as it was frantically being tidied and re-set. The continental section looked decimated and they didn't have time to replenish. We sat and watched staff frantically and nosily clattering about clearing and redressing tables. It was like a fire fight. We then waited 25 mins for a full Scottish breakfast. When asking where it was our waiter told us it was waiting to come out and was third in the queue! Why didn't he bring it out? From what I could see it was one chap’s job to bring out the hot food and he was rushed off his feet. Come on guys lets have some teamwork! It was dried out as it had been under a heat lamp for too long and the plate was horrendously hot, which was a shame as it looked like it would have been good when fresh, what a let-down for the chef!

The only positives were the great view of castle from breakfast room and all the staff were polite but clearly were under a lot of strain when at full capacity. Thanks to Jorge for our peace offering of a bottle of wine and lugging our bags around.

After getting British Airways involved as nothing could be done for us and the promised deep clean never happened we were moved to the Apex Waterloo, this is a much better hotel. Wish this had happened on the Friday we arrived, However I can’t say I will be staying at another Apex hotel I'm afraid. I don't find the fully booked comment an excuse, we hadn't booked last minute this was arranged in January,

It may have been bad luck but we felt our wedding anniversary was ruined.

Room Tip: If in need of a disabled room avoid 3012 3026 too hot and overlooks smoking area and ugly view of t...

The staff are very friendly, the hotel is very clean and modern and the rooms are cleaned every day - We had a room looking onto the Grassmarket and Edinburgh Castle, we couldnt have asked for better! The facilities are great, the breakfast is fantastic (as a change fo pace try a small cafe just left of the restaurant, we had a fantastic "Full Scottish"). The location is fantastic, just a short walk to literally anywhere. I would recommend this Hotel to friends and family, we would definitely go back if we where to go back to Edinburgh!

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking onto the Grassmarket & the Castle! These are also very quiet rooms!

Unfortunately, due to an incident on the train recently, my husband is suffering from claustrophobia and panic attacks. Bearing this in mind we decided to opt for a room with a balcony. At this late stage availability was few and so we had to stay in two different hotels (not separately LOL but one night in each).

The hotel is situated in Grassmarket - The very centre of everything. :)

The staff were very helpful. Our room wasn't ready, so not only did we get a £10 voucher to spend in the hotel (you get this when you book direct) we also got a voucher for a free drink each. The room became available within a couple of minutes!

In addition both the bar and restaurant accept Taste card and even though we happened reserved a table (as is usually required with Taste Card) they were happy to allow us the discount. We ordered room service and the size of the meal was great and it was very tasty. My husband was very impressed with my bargain!

We had a deluxe room which is really worth the extra! There is a balcony. We have stayed at The Caledonian before in a castle view room and I have to say the view at The Apex far exceeded The Caledonians. We were in room 4009.

The toiletries were Elemis - true quality.

We also received complimentary Gourmet jelly beans and a tube of pringles, in addition to tea, coffee and water etc.

The staff were very attentive and were happy to give me two Apex ducks for my grandsons.

They really wanted to please.

We will definitely return.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a Deluxe

Fantastic stay at this hotel. The rooms were very clean and very large! The bed was super comfortable.

I stayed for a business trip for a week. The breakfast everyday was brilliant a wide variety of choice.

Being on the grass market it is walking distance to everything which means it is perfect location!

The hotel is well staffed and the view from the breakfast room is spectacular. Food and service is very good.

A great location right in the grass market area. Good for city centre, the castle and a number of pubs/restaurants.

Book well enough in advance, get a deal and this place is one of the best in the city.
