1) Bathroom had standing water all over the entire stay.
2) The shower was constantly clogged.
3) Cleaning personell smelled worse than the bathroom.
4) Pub across the street is extremely loud extremelty late.
5) Someone threw up all over bathroom and help did not clean it for at least 3 days.
It was my worst hostel stay ever, do yourself a favor and stay anywhere else!

The beds are a bit unconfortable. Nice neighbourhood. My room was extremely warm. The price is really good.

I went to Edinburgh for a friend's birthday and she suggested we all stayed in a hostel because they are so cheap. My boyfriend and I managed to get a room just the two of us which is good for hostels- many I have stayed in have been dorms. He had never stayed in a hostel.

The room was fine but the bed sheets had unusual stains on them despite the apparent cleanliness of the room. Our front door was kicked in and the bathroom had no toilet roll which is always a bit of a downer especially when we're used to ensuite etc.

We were in Edinburgh for 2 nights and could only spend one in the hostel. In short, the night we spent there I was sitting up on the verge of tears looking up a cheap hotel for the next night. This was because at about 2 in the morning a large group of students clattered into the flat and were singing/laughing/shouting/screaming. I know this is not the hostels fault but for 5 hours we were prisoners to this noise that travels so loudly through thin walls.

I am snob but this was just the icing on the cake. I am also a student and like to have a good time at night but this was so disrespectful and annoying. I just couldnt take anymore. After two hours of sleep at 7 in the morning we went to the Thistle and booked a room for the second night.

Now here is the crazy thing... We booked Cowgate for £50 per night, so £25 each. At the Thistle at the end of Prince's Street we got a room for £80 per night, just £15 extra each for a gorgeous room, a double bed, an ensuite and most importantly peace and quiet! I just cannot get my head around how you can go from such a low standard of accommodation to such a high standard in just £15.

Maybe we were just unlucky. We were planning on doing more in the daytime sightseeing etc so our nightlife wasn't as heavy but if you are going for nightlife it probably is a good hostel (it is in a great nightlife location)- especially if you are planning on not sleeping. Just be aware of those who are getting their head down!

Having read through the reviews on this site, we feared the worse as we headed up to Edinburgh. On arrival, we were pleasantly surprised by not on only the warm welcome of the staff, but the cleanliness of the rooms and especially the toilet and shower facilities. The pub opposite, The Three Sisters, was pefectly placed and did good food and was very lively late on. I appreciate this may not all be ideal for a family looking to see the sights, but if you are looking for a clean place with a central location to rest your head at the end of a long day, its perfect. I honestly dont see how anybody could moan, would recomend this place to any friends heading up to Edinburgh.

Stayed here in March '09. The main premise of our trip was a college trip away. The room was fairly clean but the matresses need to be replaced. To be honest the place was a dump. There was nowhere to hang clothes or a storage likes lockers. The light in the room wouldn't work. Our room was located on the ground with the window facing onto an extremly busy pub, if we hadn't visited the pub and stayed till closing time then we wouldn't have got much sleep as the pub was very very loud.

Our party of 12 women stayed here for my friends hen do for 2 nights 6th and 7th march. When we entered the reception it smelt really bad, my first thought was if this is what the reception is like what will the rooms be like. We were given our keys and when we opened the door to the building the first thing that hit us was the red paint everywhere, quite scary. We went into our room and it smelt of foist, the floors were filthy and you could not walk around in bare feet, the pillows had an awful smell and i wrapped mine in my towel so that i did not have to lie directly on it, the mattresses on 3 of the beds had a indent in the middle that was difficult to get out of and my mattress was brown urgh. The shower was filthy and we actually had to clean it before we could use it and the toilet that was in the bathroom was blocked with poo, tried to flush it but it would not flush, we informed reception and they came up and cleared it away but we could not use the toilet as it would not flush at all. so we had 1 toilet and 1 shower between 12 ladies, a challenge. we just dumped our bags and went straight out, the least amount of time we had to spend in there the better.
The pub opposite, The Three Sisters, was very very noisy and as our window did not fully close, there was a gap at the top, we were kept awake till bout 5am.
On the sat morning some of the women decided they were going to make cups of tea, they boiled the kettle which was so old and over used that even though it was not full the water bubbled over the top and the kettle jumped and the lid flipped open and it did not switch off, at least the bench got a good clean with the boiling water.

On the sunday when we handed the keys in we decided that while we were waiting for bus we would go over to The Three Sisters for breakfast, if you are considering the same thing dont.......one of our party waited 50 mins for scrambled egg on toast and it wasnt even busy, we all waited 30 mins before our cups of tea/coffee were brought to our table. it cost another member of the party £4.50 for poached egg on toast which consisted of 2 slices of toast and 1 yes 1 poached egg.

We had several problems: the toilet did not flush the water, the heater was not working during all our stay. Each time we spoke with the receptionist, who did not care at all ("we are so sorry sir, we will have a look, tonight it will be fixed"). Of course, nothing happen....

Other point, they did not give us back the deposit of 20£ they toke for the keys :-( We had a flight at 10, so we waited until 8.15 (the reception should be open at 8), and nobody come... We phone to the mobile number sticked on the door, we woke up a guy, but nobody come... We decided to be honest by letting the keys+the blankets inside the room hoping they will transfer the money, but they even did not care opening our mail... Two weeks later, we finally ask a friend living in Edinburgh at this time to reach the hotel for asking some explanation. They first refused to give back the money, finally they transfer 10£ while saying they are transfering 20£...

So big lies for an hotel that save the money of the heater, and furthermore, keep the money of your deposit....
