“Cheap place in the perfect location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2012

We were kindly greeted and got a room for four people.
In the room were two bunk-beds and a simple sink. We only stayed in the room to sleep. Budget Backpackers attracts mostly young people so it can become quite noisy in the evenings (even though the staff wants it to be quiet after a certain hour)
Bathroom with toilet and shower were right outside our room. It was not so much space, but it was fresh.
Down on the bottom floor were very pleasant activities in the evenings. There was also a pub/restaurant that served simple dishes and drink at very good prices. The staff were very nice all the time!

In summary, Budget Backpackers is for those who want to sleep cheap in a good location! It is a place for you that is OK with just the basic stuff.

The location is pretty good, close to a lot of pubs, bars, shops and more.

The employees are great; friendly, cool and they do care about their (future) residents. They really are very friendly and helpfull, it felt like home!

The rooms were good. We had a 4 beds room. Good enough space (not cramped) and enough storage facilities. The room also had 4 power outlets, something I hadn't seen at other hostels altough not that important it still is verry handy when you travel with 4 people and their phones and camera's! Beds are a bit noisy.

Hygiene is ok. Showers consist mostly out of small spaces with a glass door and a curtain. Showers could be a lot better, had a few cold and dirty showers.

The atmosphere in the hostel really is amazing! Full credit for that goes to the employees. Public area's are great to chill out, have a drink or dinner/breakfast. Food quality is also really good and cheap for what you get.

I will definitly return to this hostel first when I go back to Scotland!

This was my first ever hostel stay but I can tell you after reading innumerable other reviews, this hostel has to be the best Hostel in Edinburgh. Awesome location, right at the centre of the town, few mins away from the castle and just at the middle of the best night clubs of the town. Will not recommend it to people who are looking very peaceful environment as this place becomes extremely vibrant by evening and the hostel lobby itself becomes like a lounge bar. Extremely friendly staff, they help you with literally everything you would need in the city- routes, tours and they also host free city walking tour in morning and a pub crawl session at nights! Just Perfect!!

We came for a place to sleep and got much more. Great central location, friendly helpful staff, nice bed, kitchen, bar, chillout zone. We stayed in the building across the road from the main hostel but it really wasn't a problem going back and forth. Couldn't get the shower to work but I didn't ask how. HOT shower definitely included. I couldn't get it any colder then 100 degrees :P I loved the games on every night. Pub quiz, live music and then the Pub Crawl afterward. Everything was clean. Might not suit people looking for a good nights sleep every night. Since we were coming in late at night making as little noise as possible but probably still made a good bit. I had a great stay overall.

Room Tip: Second building may be quieter - or just bring ear-plugs like every back-packer should.

Stayed there for 3 nights. It is located in the Old Town, near the castle and the main streets. There are many pubs a few steps away, which was very convenient - however quite noisy at night. Rooms were clean and bathrooms too. Eight people (two rooms of four) divided one bathroom, so sometimes you had to wait to use it. Breakfast was not included, but they offered it for 2 pounds. We were put on the building across the street from the reception, which was not very convenient and internet was not working there. Despite that, I recommend it, especially because of the location!

Hi,
Except the extremely central location, and a colorful set up, this place doesn't have much to offer in real terms.
We stayed in a 4 bed room, where we got no sleep, because of the noise of the traffic going by.
Bare minimum requirements of a peaceful sleep and a hot shower were not met.
Choose this place only for the advantage of its location, if that is your prime concern.
Regards,
Renu

Hi Traveller , We are in a very central location hence the unfortunate possibility of some noise from outside . Our Showers are always hot so not sure why you did not get a hot shower . We have checked all the showers to ensure they are all hot. and they are. Please ask for room at the back of the hostel next time you stay as they are extremely quiet....Manager BB

It was a place to sleep...and that's just what I did there. Stayed in the 4 bed female dorm, wished there was a tad bit more heat in the room. It was so cold...
The showers were so nice and warm. They were also kept pretty clean considering how many people used them.
Only thing is that the door across from our room slams so loudly that it kept on waking everybody up. Also wish that the 10pm (or was it 11pm?) quiet time was enforced. There were some German students across the hall from our room that were having quite the party with music, yelling, screaming and all until the wee hours of the morning. Streets are also quite noisy at night.
Food is pretty good and the common room is neat. Great place to meet people that's for sure. This place is just great for that if you're traveling on your own.
