“Good value and location”
Reviewed 12 January 2014

We stayed here for two nights while visiting family. We chose it for the price, the pool and the location - it is slightly off the main tourist drag but near interesting areas of Tollcross and the University, with lots of bars and restaurants a short walk away. I liked our room which had a great view of the castle (worth asking for one), and I liked the slightly unusual layout of the room - there was room for both people to have a bit of space - there is a desk right up at one end, round the corner from the bed and sofa.I didnt find the bed very comfortable, it was quite hard, but my partner thought it was fine.
The pool is nice but very small - best to pick a time when you have it to yourself. We had dinner in the restaurant as it was part of our deal and were pleasantly surprised by the interesting menu and good food. But it would be a shame not to venture out to somewhere in the surrounding area to eat as well. The breakfast was OK but not worth the £13.95 price if it isnt in your deal and you have time to pop down the road to a cafe instead.
The staff were really friendly and helpful.
I would go back, especially if they upgrade the beds!

Room Tip: Rooms down the side are quieter and have great views of the castle

We visited Edinburgh for my boyfriends birthday and chose to stay here due to the reasonable prices and the fact it had a pool.
We had a fast check in and our own parking space in secure underground parking which made me feel safe. The parking only costs £15 per exit so we left it there for our whole stay and only left to go home.
Our room was beautiful. Bright and airy, clean, nice amenities and a huge bed. We didn't hear any other guests for the whole stay and totally relaxed. The Tv was flat screen with a choice of channels and also had a mini fridge and refreshment tray. The toilet is separate to the bathroom which we quite liked, especially in the mornings.
They even left a birthday card for my boyfriend which was a lovely touch.
The staff on reception and throughout the hotel were very helpful, they gave great directions and were always quick to help. Very professional and kind.
The fitness suite is quite small with only a few machines but the ones they had were in good condition and the ones I mainly use anyway.
The pool was a nice size and temperature however be aware that they do children's swim lessons until 1pm for local families. They signposted this throughout the hotel and to be honest it didn't bother us its a nice thing they do for thier community.
The location is really close to grassmarket and Lothian Road so great for pubs and restaurants. It's a 15 min walk from the castle and not too busy or bustling that you feel safe and we never needed to use a taxi in the 2 days we were there.
Really enjoyed it stay and would go back and recommend our friends. An asset to the novotel brand. Thank you x

Stayed here for 5 nights and loved it. The staff were great, rooms wonderful and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the cosy bar and the amazing breakfasts. A short walk to the sights and handy to everywhere. Even saw squirrels!

This hotel was only booked for one night to enjoy an evening at the Festival Theatre. It was well situated for the theatre and we enjoyed the evening walk back through the lively university area. We found the hotel to be in a good walking area and handy for access to a range of restaurants. It was not far to walk 'down' to Princess Street although we did use a taxi for the return 'uphill' journey.
The hotel itself was adequate for a one night stay. As previous users have remarked, the rooms were small and the shower/toilet facilities weird with the toilet being separate in a very small closet with no wash hand basin. The public areas were well furnished and bright. Breakfast had a good choice and was enjoyable. Overall I would return to this hotel as I liked the location and the value for money

Stayed for three nights over the New Year. Good location, 15 min walk from castle and downtown, so it was quiet and away from the street party.
Nicely set up, with small pool, spacious lobby area with seating off to one side. Helpful staff.
Very limited parking, paid 15 pounds per night in nearby underground lot.
Room was quiet and comfortable, fairly spacious, with bath and shower. The WC was in a small closet-like area by itself, without even a wash basin, which seemed an odd design.

Booked this short break as a follow on from a few days in Aberdeen. Hotel was towards the edge of town which meant a 20 min walk - all uphill. Was a little tricky to find too. Once there check in was easy once the queue of people went down. Was meant to be in a superior double but nothing about the room suggested it was anything more than standard. Bathroom was in see through folding doors - although the toilet was separate - unusual to say the least. Staff were helpful and polite and breakfast buffet was great!

It is always hard booking hotels away from the country you are staying, but having read the reviews on here I was expecting a decent stay, I was however a bit disappointed. The fact that this hotel was situated in Edinburgh City centre was what made up for everything else. The staff were helpful to an extent, the room was small and the bed was uncomfortable. The bathroom was even smaller and I felt like I was in a shoebox when going to the toilet. For a couple who enjoys their fitness I was also disappointed with the 'gym' it was only a treadmill, bike, rower and stair master in a tiny room. The pool did look nice but I was otherwise a bit disappointed. I would only recommend booking if there are special deals and you are only going to sleep in the room.
