“Great location and a great overall experience”
Reviewed 21 June 2014 via mobile

Booked an executive room online as it was one of the only decent hotels who would let us have two cots in the room without having to pay for a suite. We checked in early (before lunchtime) and although our room wasn't quite ready, the staff made sure we only had to wait for a short while (5min). The room was quite spacious, even with the two cots, and clean. As it is part of the accor group, you know what to expect decor wise. Our bed was exceptionally comfortable and the air conditioning was much appreciated. Breakfast was good quality for a buffet and there was plenty to chose from. The location of this hotel and our overall experience mean that we will definitely stay there again next time we are in Edinburgh.

We booked a suite here some months in advance receiving a excellent rate. It was large and more than comfortable. The beds were in separate rooms and were very comfortable. The bathroom was fabulous with a lovely big bath and separate shower. We ordered rooms service a few times which was good. The children's meals were huge and very tasty. Breakfast wasn't great, the selection was limited and the service could be a bit slow. But this would be the only negative I can think of. The reception and bar staff are more than friendly and helpful. The hotel is behind the castle but is a easy walk away bringing you past Grey friars.

Stayed here for an overnight in Edinburgh, and I have to say I was very unimpressed, considering the whopping pre booked £144 room rate NOT including breakfast, at an extra £13.95. The ‘walk in off the street’ rate was advertised as an eye watering £319 ! I have stayed in Novotel’s before and found that they are usually of a below average standard, but given the high price of the room, this one is a definite notch below the usual averageness, but then its Edinburgh and so they can charge tourists what they are prepared to pay, although I think that most of their custom comes from package deals, judging by the queue of posh coaches lined up outside reception, and the plethora of Japanese tourists who were milling around the reception.

There are no views from this hotel that I could see, and its location is just handy on a back street but certainly not premier position, it’s only round the corner five mins from the Elephant Café for you JK Rowling fans, and less than a ten minute walk to the Royal mile and fifteen to the castle I grant you, so that’s what you are paying for.

The room I stayed in was on the 1st floor, and overlooked the street on which this hotel is located, it had two small double beds, which is a bit strange, why not one large king size ? The ergonomics of the room made no sense at all, there was a bathroom with a bath, a hand basin and seperate walk in shower, which was off the main room, the toilet for some reason (known only to the architect I suspect), was in a separate cubicle located by the entry door of the room itself, so when one had finished doing what one does in the WC, one then had to exit and walk 25 feet round to the bathroom to wash ones hands !

There was a sub -standard TV in the room which was secured to the fake wood desk by a pole screwed into the fake wood, although it was a flat screen and was a Phillips brand but not easy to use, I couldn’t see any channel guide, and so only briefly watched terrestrial UK TV channels. The volume was also restricted so that I guess other guests would not be disturbed by noise pollution of a louder than needed TV, but the problem was that the TV wasn’t loud enough to hear when you were sat on the bed.

The lighting in the room was stark, and too bright for most occasions, and made no sense, there being a bolted down lamp on said fake wood desk, adjacent to the TV, putting way too much glare on the screen. Also there were silly built in lamps set into on the fake wood headboard, which was screwed to and spanned the entire width of one wall.

There also seemed to be a lack of sensibly placed power sockets, none by the bed that I could find, which was a pain as my phone needed charging overnight and I had set the alarm, so I had to plug it into the only socket I could see which was behind the fake wood desk next to the TV.
There was tea coffee and hot chocolate making facilities provided with a kettle, there was also a minibar fridge which contained only two bottles of water stating that these were £2.50 each, what a rip off !

The only redeeming feature of this room was that it had air conditioning, which did seem to work reasonably well given that the ambient outside temp was a very humid Scottish 26 degrees.
There was also secure underground parking, with direct access to the hotel via a lift, although not large, the car park was I think reasonably priced at £15 per night, which in my experience and when compared to other European Cities is cheap.

Spend two nights in the hotel. Rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. Location is not perfect, but still very good - within a few minutes' walk from the center (only problem is non-ideal access using public transportation). The hotel's staff was really nice, and breakfast was decent. Would love to use the hotel again!

Amazing hotel, really recommend! Breakfast is really good. Can't say about the other meals, as I was all the rest of the day eating on the streets. The pool was just amazing. Even during cool days, it makes you want to go as the place is acclimatized in a hot temperature and it is also combined with a jacuzzi. Located on a very god place, it is just a few minutes walking ti he Castle and to the Grasmarked where the bars are. There is a bus (35) that goes and comes from the airport for 1.50 pounds and stops like.. 30 meters from the hotel. 10 minute walking to the Princess Street and its stores. Rooms are big and the AC... you need to have some patience... and then you fell it. I recommend! Neighborhood is calm. The premises are came at night.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a room that lets you see the castle by the window as a friend of mine got on room...

Got a queen bed and two single fold-out sofa beds for the two kids (12 & 14). Queen was very comfortable, fold outs not so much, but what can you expect? Room was small but comfortable. WiFi is free, performance is adequate. Location is excellent, esp. For the price.

The only real issue was the room temperature - it was hot, night and day, and not controllable. They don't have air conditioning! So you have to open the windows and that didn't help much...and the street is relatively busy and noisy.

I won't stay there again because of this.

Stayed here for one night a group of 3 adults and 5 teenage girls to go to 1 direction concert at Murrayfield. Easy to get too from Waverley station and no problems getting bus or tram to venue. Very clean and comfortable and considering the amount of other concert goers also staying at the hotel very quiet. Breakfast adequate, certainly no complaints and decent coffee, always a plus in my book.Very impressed with staff all very helpful and seemed genuinely keen to help.
