Have just come back from a weekend in Edinburgh staying the the Novotel, very nice hotel we got a v. good rate for 2 nights thru work. The hotel is central only 10min frm the castle 15mins for Princes St, the open top bus stops just down the road from the hotel. We didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that, we did think it was a bit expensive £12.95 each per day. The rooms were great good size very clean, the staff were very great esp. on the front desk we were given a late check-out on the last day at no extra cost which meant we could go out and about till 3pm before cheking out and getting a cab to the apt (£15.00). Has a nice pool and gym, the bar area is decent too. You can play PS2 in the reception, there's also a PC with internet access (£1 for 10mins) enough to chk in online though the day b4! Had a really good stay will def be back.

I don't know if all rooms have the toilet entirely separate from the shower/bathroom but I don't think a 4 star hotel should have a set up like that.

The "slop cell" - as I took to calling it - didn't even have a hand basin!!

That bizarre set up aside the hotel is in a decent (not excellent) location and was clean enough.

My wife & I stayed here over the Valentine's weekend and were very happy with our stay. We flew to Edinburgh so didn't need to use the car park. We were made to feel welcome by the staff on the front desk and the room was quiet and comfortable. Our bed had a firm mattress, which is the way we like it as we both have dodgy backs. The blackout curtains worked a treat as almost none of the street lighting from outside made it through. There was a good selection of teas and coffee in the room, which was replenished daily and the iron was useful and worked fine. Local information was provided in the room including a useful map.

For a leisure visit to the city, the Novotel is really well-positioned as it is only a short walk to the Castle, Princes Street and Royal Mile. If you want to visit the zoo like we did then you can catch the bus from Princes Street pretty easily. The cost of a taxi to and from the airport was pretty reasonable compared to certain resorts down here in the South.

The only thing we felt could do with improvement was that the restaurant was very busy at breakfast time, meaning that the hot breakfast buffet and crockery weren't replenished as quickly as we would have liked. This was fine for us as we were there to chill out so we didn't have anywhere to be in a hurry but I can imagine it being a bit frustrating for business customers or leisure visitors with coach tours to catch. Also when we went down to try and get a table for the Valentine's meal the restaurant was full (we should have booked really) so we were asked to wait in the bar. This was fine except 40 minutes later no-one had popped in to give us an update, which I would put down to the restaurant being too busy for the number of staff there. In the end we ordered room service, which by that point had a waiting time of 45 minutes.

The only other negative point was that the jacuzzi was out of action on the last day. While this was a shame, it was hardly the end of the world as we were still able to enjoy the steam room, pool and sauna.

Would definitely go back as Edinburgh is a truly fantastic city for a short break and the hotel is a good base to explore the city from.

Just got back from a weekend stay at the edinburgh novotel, and found the hotel to be very good, we booked this hotel through tesco has we cashed in our point vouchers, the hotel cost us only £50 for 2 nights in the end. but suprisingly when we got there they upgraded us to a top floor suite with views of the castle for free. The room was excellent and good sized, with massive windows, shower cubicle, bath and sink was all modern and the toilet was seperate. And had your usual extras inc iron & board plus big lcd tv.The breakfast was nice too with everything from cereal, fruit to full fry-up.They was also a swimming pool & gym & bar. The staff was very freindly & helpfull, Only one thing wrong was it was bit of a walk to the attractions but wouldnt stop us booking there again.

I've reviewed this hotel before. It's a good hotel for business travel and I like that the restaurant is good. The staff are very friendly and can't do enough to make your stay pleasant. However, during my last few stays, the service offered in the restaurant has been poor. Half of the restaurant menu "off" - no reason given - and I mean half - leaving only the bar snacks available. The breakfast buffet not replenished - again no explanation. The breakfast rate is £12 and only cereal available unless you want to wait 20 minutes. Just not good enough

We stayed here on Saturday night as although we live locally, we didn't want the hassle of trying to get home at 4am.

We've stayed in a few Novotels before, and this is definitely below average.

The sauna and steam room were OK, but the hotel was not busy so we were lucky to enjoy both to ourselves for a period in the afternoon.

The room was tired and in desperate need of a make over. We stayed in a queen "superior" room but this description was seriously short.

We didn't have breakfast as we made our way to a nice place down in the Grassmarket for half the price.

Good location in Edinburgh centre, good price and exactly what the title suggests - functional.

Although the hotel advertises itself as Edinburgh Central, its not really that conveniently placed. I found the castle and Princes Street deceptively far away and its nowhere near the station. Its near to the very seedy Lothian Road end of town which is best avoided. However the open top bus does stop opposite, which is a great way to see the city. Edinburgh is a city utterly designed for a nice weekend away. Its small and compact with a ridiculous amount of restaurants, pubs, art galleries and music venues.

The hotel itself was comfortable, if a little bland and characterless and the rooms were pleasant.

Staff were courteous and helpful, mainly foreign if that bothers you.

The bar was aiming at metro louge cool but was a mish mash of styles, we didn't bother eating there as it looked extortionate.

Sauna and pool were fine but the pool does have a surprising lack of privacy. To reach the pool and fitness area you need to go down some stairs and as the pool has a glass wall, people using it can see inside.

Would go again because its decent for the £70/night price. However the hotel has the character of an office block, so don't expect to be swept off your feet.
