Twice I have stay at this hotel last year and this year. After complaining about the noises and no room service for two days. The hotel gave us a two night break free in a quiet room, but the joke was on me from the hotel, the room there gave me was room 446 next door to the services lift and stairs, the room facing the back entrance of the kitchen, trollys being pushed outside with dirty laundry, laundry trucks, bins empty from the kitchen from very early morning until late at night, trollys being pushed about .
Don't expected a nice morning swim, children unsupervised by parents, jumping in, driving in.
Breakfast cold both mornings no better than a truck cafe, only better surroundings.

We visited the hotel in the past for a business trip and had a pleasant stay.
In Oct 2009 we made a booking but we had to modify the booking. The modification has been announced timely, however for the cancelled date we had to pay the full price.
Complaints did not help; no refund, no discount for future stay or other compensation has been offered.
Furthermore it is not in line with there cancellation policy on their own website.
So ask for cancellation policy before you make a reservation.

Just returned from a 2 night stay at the Novotel in Edinburgh Centre. The hotel is in an excellent location close to Grassmarket. The room was what you would expect from a Novotel- clean and functional. It appeared to have been newly re-furbished. We made use of the pool which whilst busy at times was a nice bonus for a city centre hotel. What particularly impressed us about this Novotel and made it stand out from others we have stayed in were the staff. Without exception from our arrival to our departure they were helpful and friendly even remembering our name and room number. At check in we were warned that the hotel was full and that breakfast would be busy after 8:30. As a result we arrived early both mornings and enjoyed an excellent breakfast; grateful for the advice we had been given. We will definitely stay again next time we visit Edinburgh and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

I stayed in Novotel Edinburgh Centre in July 2007. My room was very big, breakfast was excellent and the overall service as well. The only problem I had to cope with was the Internet Connection. I could not get connected and that was a trouble for me because I had to check my email for profesionnal reasons.

Just returned from Edinburgh after a 2 night break at the Novotel.
We were a group of 7 (3 adults & 4 kids) in 2 queen rooms which had a sofa bed along with the double.

The room was clean and fairly spacious. There is virtually no drawers/hanging space though and the weird thing was that the W.C was totally separate from the main bathroom - which meant you had to come out from the loo and go into the bath/shower room to wash your hands!

The hotel was within minutes walk from the Grassmarket, which was very lively even in the afternoons - particularly with the weather being good - we sat outside and enjoyed a drink while people watching!
We did take taxis a bit after busy days shopping as it was hard work pushing a buggy over the Mound and carrying all the things we had bought back to the hotel. This was only just over a fiver and there were always plenty of them about.

We made good use of the pool - since the kids wanted to!
On the whole it was fairly clean apart from the few stray hairs on the floor & walls of the steam room! The water in the spa pool was a distinctly different colour to that in the main pool. Been in a lot worse though and it didn't stop us enjoying it at the time. Lots of clean towels available for your use.
We didn't use the gym and didn't see anyone else doing so either.

Breakfast was extremely busy both mornings we were there. We didnt even try sitting as a group as we had to wait about 20 mins each day for a table for 4 (probably due to the fact that we went at 9am along with 80% of the hotel's guests). The food was nothing exciting.

In the evenings we did use the bar as the kids could sit with us. The barman (said he was Italian, George, I think) was very friendly and entertaining. He made great mojitos!! It was quite expensive though at £8 a time.

The late check-out on Sunday was a bonus - 4pm.

On the whole we were made most welcome at the Novotel and I would recommend it for a couple of nights away.

We stayed 3 nights, at a great rate of £95 per room inc breakfast.
The hotel itself is modern, light & clean.
The rooms are also clean & spacious. The bed was comfortable and the shower great.
We didn't eat or drink at the hotel (other than breakfast), as the main 'plus' for me was the location. 5 minutes walk from the Grassmarket (those who state 10 mins etc must have short legs!). Great pubs and restaurants here (Black Bull, Beehive, Last Drop & Mussel and Steak Bar all excellent). A few minutes walk further on and you're at the top end of the Royal Mile.
The only negative for me (as specified by others also) was the breakfast. The food itself was good, but the service was very poor. 2 out of the 3 mornings we had a 10 min wait to be seated (even though there were empty tables, the issue was lack of staff the clean and re-set them). The waiting staff (maitre d' aside) were surly to the point of being rude, and if they can't devise a system where they ask new guests what they would like to drink within a few minutes of being seated, then i suggest the hotel invest in self-serve tea and coffee facilities.
Other, general, tips: Castle is a must (despite the crowds), Holyrood Palace, New Parliament building both good. Bumbling up and down Royal Mile, George Street and the nicer parts of Princes Street. Favourite places for 'refreshment' - Cafe Royal (near Balmoral Hotel - fantastically preserved Victorian pub) & the Whiski Bar on Royal Mile.

We had a sense of deja-vu as the bedroom was virtually identical to Novotel La Rochelle which we stayed in last summer. It's clean, modern and has everything you need but lacks any individuality. It was very busy in the morning and breakfast was a bit of a rugby scrum. So much so that we had breakfast in our room on our last day but they cocked up the order completely.Novotel is quite convenient and everything is within reasonable walking distance. The rack rate was £189 per night plus £12.95 for breakfast so the £237 we paid for three nights B and B was something of a bargain.
