“Massive apartment!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 August 2014

We arrived at the hotel very early due to an early flight. They were happy to take our cases and send us off into edinburgh. Went arriving back we were shown to our apartment - wow.!!!!!
We had a bedroom (king size bed) bathroom ( with bath and shower over), a fully equip kitchen, plus a lounge with sofa so large I guess it could sit 10 - 12 people!
It was so comfortable it would be easy to stay in and not explore Edinburgh.
A couple of comments: it would have been nice to have seen when booking the room that there were no lifts - lot of stairs - glad we weren't on the top floor!
It was a walk out of edinburgh - about 10 minutes from princes street. This meant it was nice and quiet but I personally would have loved to have been in this apartment but closer to the city!

The rooms here are huge and have everything you could possibly want. I could of actually lived here for a month.

The staff were great.

The hotel doesnt have a lift so bear that in mind, and it doesn't have a restaurant although there are plenty of good ones in walking distance.

It's about a 5 minute walk from Princes street so about 15 mins to the royal mile. Unlike staying on the Royal mile it's very quiet here.

The Chester Residence is a luxury hotel located just a few blocks from the Old Town in a very quiet residential area. If you want to be in the middle of the city bustle, this may not be for you, but it was perfect for us.
The rooms are huge - apartments, really. You could easily move in for an extended stay. Nespresso coffee maker in the quite well-equiped (for a rental) kitchen. Big showers. Big screen TV in living room and smaller TVs in bed and even the bath. Free WiFi.
The staff is simply amazing. Courteous, efficient, helpful before, during and after the visit. We emailed ahead for some restaurant and car reservations and they took care of everything.
It is only fair to point out that some of the positives may be negatives for some travelers. This is a luxury, i.e, expensive, property. The apartment-like rooms may simply be more than some want or need.
There is no restaurant, though you can pre-order breakfast to be delivered to you room. This was probably the weakest feature of the hotel. Breakfast was pretty well limited to big-carb selections. However, we almost never eat breakfast in our room, so that was not a problem for us.
If you are looking for space, comfort, service and a quiet place at night and you are not price sensitive, this could definitely be the place for you.

Room Tip: There are 4 floors with no elevators. Plan accordingly.

I've never been so eager to grant a 5 rating until now. We could not have been more pleased, other than being able to stay a bit longer.

Here is what you should know.
1) Check-in/out
3 PM/ 12 PM, respectively. These are not your average hotel rooms, so it takes some time clean.

2) About the hotel
This is a boutique hotel with a bit under 30 unique flats. We stayed in the owner's residence and it was a dream. Ample space (well over 500 Sq ft - which is what I was told, but I think it was bigger). Bedroom, fantastically modern en-suite bathroom, living room, kitchen, media room (really cool), another bathroom with a separate DOUBLE Jacuzzi bath with a TV, back yard. We could live here permanently.
There were just two of us, but this place would be perfect for families, as well. Just get a different flat.

3) Location
Edinburgh is not that big, so nothing is too far away. Easy cab ride from airport (under 20 GBP if I recall). Easy walk to the Royal Mille, Castle, etc. 10+min

4) The Staff
What can I say about the staff? They were perfect in every way. We arrived early, so they gave us some ideas for a walk, armed us with a map and guidance and a coupon for a really nice bar around the corner for two free drinks (do this if you can). When we got back with another hour to spend, one of the staff embarked on an adventure to make a not-so-frequently-requested drink for me in their lounge. It's comfy, small bar nothing to write home about but just right for what it needed to be.
When we got "home" each time we were welcomed as if we were coming home to see family. This is just not something you get with a larger hotel.

5) Value/Price
Sure, it's not "cheap", but for what we got, we've never had a better value.

Whenever we return to Edinburgh, we will undoubtedly stay here.

Room Tip: For two people sleeping in same bad, you must get the Owner's residence!!

Was a lovely suite. Although beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean and the staff really helpful we felt it a little soulless. Again even though the apartment living area was enormous I came back in to the bedroom the following morning to find my wife sat on the floor, surrounded by luggage in front of the full length wardrobe mirror in the small bedroom doing her makeup! There wasn't enough room for a dressing table even though you'd have probably got 100 of them in the living room! Bathroom too was small and just not very carefully thought out. I'm being over critical yes. But at over £300 a night I booked thinking it would be a real treat, cheaper and better (number 1 on TA) than the 5* hotels in the centre of town and slightly different. I didn't think it represented value over a traditional hotel. Possibly, if you've got the cash and wanted to stay a week the apartment is better than a traditional room, but there was only 1 bedroom you'd need 3 bedrooms (more people!) to make use of the enormous living room! We didn't use the kitchen area either. I'm not sure if you're staying in Edinburgh and staying in an luxury town centre apartment you'd be doing much home cooking / dining? Even with our kids there would have been room to play and feed but nowhere for them to sleep! Been better with the bedroom in the living room and the living room in the bedroom! Not that we had an unpleasant time at all but for our purpose I just think personally I'd have been happier in a £300 a night hotel. We also paid extra for parking that we booked in advance and of course breakfast is not included.

My husband booked this hotel as a surprise first anniversary getaway and it certainly proved to be the perfect place for a romantic retreat. He had pre-booked a transfer directly through the hotel and we were greeted at the airport by the friendly and informative Paul. We arrived at the beautiful buildings in which the Chester Residence is situated and after an easy check-in we were shown to our room. My husband had purchased the 'Romantic Package' when he booked our room and as part of this, champagne is provided and music is played in your room on arrival- the hotel were brilliant and at my husband's request played the first dance music from our wedding which certainly made the arrival very special. We stayed in one of the 'Grand' rooms and the living room itself was definitely very grand with beautiful windows and high ceilings; the furnishings were all of a very high standard. The kitchen was well equipped and the bathroom very clean. The bedroom was comfortable, my only comment for improvement would be that it could do with a desk/ dressing table of some kind to allow you to get ready with access to a mirror and plug socket whilst being able to put your make up etc. down.
Another feature of the romantic package was the 'bath butler' which meant that on our return from dinner one evening we had candles, champagne, rose petals and Molton Brown toiletries waiting for us- this was another very special touch. We ordered breakfast to be delivered to our room every morning; the romantic package already included the cost of breakfast on one of the mornings- this was delivered to our room at a time of our choice and was of very good quality and value for money. The granola sundae I can highly recommend, along with the luxury smoked salmon platter.
The location of the Chester Residence was great and offered us easy access walking to George Street for restaurants and Rose Street for smaller pubs. We walked to Princes Street for the shops, to the Castle and down the Royal Mile with no problems though if you needed it, a taxi could easily be booked through reception at the hotel. We spent one day at Edinburgh Zoo and did use a taxi to get there.
We would highly recommend the Atelier Restaurant for a quiet, high quality meal.
Overall, the Chester Residence was luxurious and for couples looking for a romantic getaway it is simply perfect.

Room Tip: No lifts so choose wisely!

I thought that I had found a great "luxury" apartment for my stay in Edinburgh during the Fringe. Boy, was luxury the last thing we found in these apartments! We arrived on a surprisingly warm day in the city, climbed four flights of stairs to an apartment with no A/C. We had to sleep with all of the windows open to remain cool allowing all of the street traffic and early morning sunshine to flow into the rooms. The mattresses were so hard that I developed neck & shoulder pain. From filthy stained carpets to dirty dishes put back into the cupboards, luxury would be the last word I would choose to describe this two bedroom apartment. I don't know how the Chester received this rating and I would never stay here again or suggest it to anyone.
