“As good as top hotels in London”

I had never stayed in a residence as opposed to an hotel before but after the experience of The Chester Residence then I would want nothing else IF they could match this. This is a magnificent place - gorgeous bedroom, well equipped kitchen, luxury bathroom and a sitting room one could hold the Olympics in, all contained in a beautiful Georgian Edinburgh house in a quiet street. I am Londo based and this matches what top London hotels can offer and would be £500 - £1,000 per night there.
However what makes it is the level of service. Everything is available and no trouble but not pushy nor intrusive. I was born and bred in Scotland but have spent all my life in England and the one thing the Scots are lousy at is service. Too many of them equate service with servility BUT not the owner manager here who is amongst a band of unique Scots who believes in customer service, and has staked all money on making this place suceed by providing guests with a wonderful stay.
I will be back.

A three night family trip to Edinburgh offered the opportunity to see whether all the rave reviews of the Chester could be right. Well, they were: our basement apartment really wanted for nothing – many families live in spaces much smaller than this! And the staff are a model of friendly efficiency too. It wasn’t even expensive - effectively £110 per bedroom per night for a midweek stay. (It's more expensive at weekends, I think).

Quibbles? Largely about technology. The apartment was at the bottom of steep stone stairs which – presumably owing to a fault - were unlit, which is simply dangerous. And have they ever heard of the environment? I find it infuriating to enter an apartment which has been left with ALL FOUR televisions (yes, four) switched on, as well as all the lights, as well as the overwhelming under-floor heating. This is presumably intended to show what a technological wonderland you've entered, but the effect is just rather vulgar and overwhelming. And it’s certainly not ‘best practice’.

But everything else about the place was pretty much beyond reproach.

Dear Acer sed justus
Thank you for your review and for scoring us 5 stars! I note from your quibbles listed that there was an issue with the security light outside your apartment, i glad this was fixed the instant you mentioned it to reception.
Also , i thought id mention that we do have an enviromental policy at the hotel which involves recycling and turning off electrical appliances in rooms, however we as a standard leave the TV's on for arriving guests , i must stress however this is for arrival only and then they are left off !

Almost don't want to review this amazing place as I'm reluctant for the
secret to get out!

My boyfriend and I went here for our first holiday together, to celebrate
my birthday. We chose the Chester on the back of Trip Advisor Reviews and
weren't disappointed. From the huge welcome to the tiny touches
(Jo Malone cologne, complementary wine, real coffee), they had us at hello
and we didn't want to say goodbye.

The apartment was beautifully finished: The epitome of laid back luxury and bigger than both of our flats put together! Size-wise, we had a bedroom for two, a kitchen for two and a lounge big enough for a party! If there was any downside it was that it was hard to drag ourselves off the massive marshmallow sofa in front of the fire to explore the wonderful city on our doorstep. I would highly recommend The Chester for business, pleasure or both!

Only had a couple of days in Edinburgh- so wanted to indulge in luxury
the Chester Residence provides this. Extremely quiet area and yet -10 minute walk to vibrant
pubs and restaurants. First time I've stayed in the west of the City and had no idea what I was missing. We will stay here again definitely.

We booked this apartment after seeing such good reviews... we were not disappointed at all!
We booked a 2 bedroom apartment in Rothesay Place. When we booked we had a choice of Chester Street, or Rothesay Place. We decided to book Rothesay Place after seeing the pictures on the hotel website - even though it was more expensive - but we are glad we paid the extra as the apartment was just fabulous!

We had the basement flat, with the private entrance and garden. One twin room, one double, both with ensuite shower rooms. The rooms were very quiet, and no noise could be heard from outside, even though our bedroom was facing the main street.

The apartment was spotlessly clean and fresh (and this comes from a family who have cleanliness OCD!). We took our own cutlery and cups, and some basic supplies expecting the worst, but I have to say we were pleasantly surprised! The kitchen had everything we needed for our 3 night stay. We were able to easily make basic meals using the equipment provided - although we could have whipped up something much more extravagant if we wanted to, as the kitchen was very well equipped.
There was a Nespresso coffee machine with a selection of complimentary coffee pods, teas, milk and sugar provided.
In the bathroom there were lots of lovely white towels, and mini Molton Brown toiletries, as well as other thoughtful touches. The guest bathroom had a TV in front of the bath which was just wonderful after a hard day sightseeing! The showers were hot and powerful.

The only bad points are: (and to be honest I am nitpicking a bit here!)
we expected Sky TV, but it's actually just Freeview - not a big deal but would have been nice to have.
Also, it would have been nice if the instructions to the microwave, heating, and other electricals had been left in the apartment for reference as we did have trouble with the microwave one morning.
We also had trouble with the heated floor in the living area one evening - it wouldn't turn off! We tried for a few hours but it didn't get any cooler, finally we gave up and called Reception who sent someone down to turn it off for us. I know it's a 5 star service that they are trying to offer - but at 11pm in your PJ's I'd have preferred to have just had the instructions to do it myself! We also couldn't open the doors for fresh air as, although the private garden had been pointed out to us when we arrived, the key did not fit any of the 3 exterior doors!
There are a couple of signs of wear and tear which should be seen to - for example, the shower holder in one ensuite was hanging off the wall. And quite a few bulbs out throughout the property.
Late at night there was quite a bit of banging doors which sounded very close - we found out that it was because we were actually situated right next to the hotel kitchen. It didn't bother me as I am a heavy sleeper, however other members of our party had some rude awakenings unfortunately.
I'm not sure car parking is mentioned on the hotel website - but it's £25 per day to park your car in the hotel carpark which we thought was very expensive, especially if you then take your car into town, you'll have to pay AGAIN to park there - which is also very costly (we paid £16 for 5 hours). There is on-street parking outside the hotel, charged at £2 per hour between 8:30am and 6:30pm (free during the night). Although there aren't a lot of spaces, we didn't struggle to get one midweek - however during the weekend it might be a different story. I imagine this is the norm though for cities!

On the whole I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting quality self-catering accomodation. I'd certainly love to visit again!

From point of arrival to point of departure, things couldn't have been better. Staff really put themselves out to be helpful, friendly and polite (coming out of reception to point out route to town on horrible freezing day/printing boarding passes with pleasure/sorting out the car parking etc). The "Room", which was a mews appartment was spacious, surprisingly bright and very quiet. All of us excited by the gadgets, TVs, proper kitchen etc. Super extra touches like holding drinks party on Saturday evening for guests (and bringing cocktails to our pad at 6pm) and slipping free of charge newspapers under the door in the morning. Location not its greatest asset, just a little distant from town, but nicely residential and we were so well disposed towards The Chester that we convinced oursleves "the walk is good for us". concerned that all this praise will go to their heads and they'll raise the prices - do hope not. Its great value is its very best asset!
