“Best rhubarb crumble in the world”

Delightful wine bar\cafe, eclectic mix of furniture, friendly efficient waiting staff. Rhubarb crumble was crisp on top, creamy underneath with lashings of rhubarb. Fabulous!

“Evening drinks and Sunday lunchtime”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

This is such a nice, relaxed and friendly bar. I have read through some of the previous reviews and I am really surprised that people have commented on the staff being unfriendly - our experience really couldn't have been more different. We went in there for a night cap on Saturday night as it was right next door to our apartment, and we were barely sat down when a very polite man came over and asked us for our drinks order, he even helped my pregnant sister 'design' her own special mocktail. The atmosphere was cosy and chilled, even with the football being shown upstairs, at no point did the noise get too loud on the ground floor.
The following day we popped in for lunch and although it was much busier, with families, students, people of all ages, the services was again, extremely welcoming and friendly. There was a minor mix up with our food order and the girl really couldn't have been more apologetic and we were offered coffees on the house to make up for this.
I liked how 'untrendy' this place was, it was as a bar/café/coffeehouse/restaurant ought to be in my view. Good food, good prices, friendly service....we definitely plan to go back!!! Go and find out for yourself.

“Good food & quirky surroundings”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

This restaurant was recommended by my colleague who had been before. It was right beside our hotel, The Macdonald Holyrood, so, very convenient. It had a great atmosphere, people calling in after work, students, the odd tourist. The tables and chairs were an eclectic mix with interesting 'stained glass' windows. There were a jumble of trinkets and finds behind the bar and on the walls, and the menu was refreshingly different. I had grilled chicken thighs cooked with smoked red pepper sauce and lemony hasselback potatoes, tzatziki and summer slaw, unusual and well executed.
Hemma in Swedish means 'at home' and this is reflected in the ambience, decor and foods served.
I will definitely return, next time in Edinburgh on business. It's not fine dining but all the more charming for it. Some other views mention slow service and yes, it was a little, but you are often prepared to forego this when somewhere grabs your attention. Reasonable prices too.

“What a find”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

Great place, lovely food and atmosphere and popular. Shame it's so out of the way and therefore more people possibly don't know about it, however guess if it wasn't it might not be so good.

“Excellent Service and food!”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Stopped in for lunch after a long morning touring Holyroodhouse Palace.
Love how cozy and comfy this place is. The split pea and dill soup was one of the best soups I've ever had, and the roasted veggie and hummus open faced sandwich was delicious. Very reasonably priced, very friendly service. I would highly recommend for a delicious and filling comfort food type of lunch.
