“A budget a lovely hostel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 October 2013

I spent 3 nights in this lovely hostel, located not far from Grassmarket about 10 minutes walk. The Staff is very friendly and is on duty from 7am to midnight, they are always very helpful with assistance and information. They were very helpful also before arrival with speedy reply to my emails, giving to me all information that I required. The area around the hostel is ok, there is a supermarket with good deals and it is open until 10pm.
The hostel is clean and there is a bathroom at each floor. Sheets and towels are provided directly with a deposit of 2£.
The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave and washing-disher, plus an electric kettler with coffee and tea always at hand. We met nice people during our breakfast included in the room rate, which is a simple breakfast with toasts, jams, butter and cereals but ok for us, it is served from 7 to 10 am.
All bathrooms have shower, with very hot water, perfect for a nice shower after a day of sightseeing.
The wifi connection, free of charge, is perfect.
We had a lovely room on the last floor, beds are very comfortable and we all had very good sleeps. Just in case, if you are a light sleeper, you can have earplugs at no charge and if you like reading at bed you can ask the staff for a 'night light bed'.
All in all the Light hostel is a neat, cozy, friendly and well located place to stay in Edinburgh at a very reasonable rate....with an amazing staff always willing to help you :)
Highly recommended!

It was at 10 minutes walking from the city center, it have a quiet but nice atmosphere.
It's curious the fact that they give you some slippers not to be with your own shoes along the hostel.
The only problem was the hot water to have a shower from 8,30 to 10 am. All the people was having the shower and even the fact that you have place in the toilet, the shower didn't work..

The breakfast was simple but enough, and the price was fine!

Very calm and welcoming hostel. A good place to go if you want a good night's sleep rather than a party hostel. Friendly staff. Would definitely come back here. Really good kitchen equipment, can cook a nice meal.

I've read the one star reviews and the hostel has clearly changed hands since then, the beds are big and comfy, and at 6"3 it's rare I fit in hostel beds, free BBQ and free and an open fire in the evening. A wonderful common room such comfy sofas nearly asleep on them, all the staff were lovely epically the manager, free breakfast and fully furnished kitchen ( so free tea coffee ect) I've stayed in many hostels and hotels and this is the best by far from my many travels, cannot fault it in the slightist. Also or the bit below there was no fitness centre or pool but I gave 5 stars because quite frankly I'm sure the manger could have you lovely ones if you just asked

Stayed for 4 nights, the staff is superfriendly and helps out with everything. The living room has a computer with free internet acces, the wifi is good, there is a large beamer (superb quality) where you can check out movies you like (great database), the kitchen is also new as are the bathrooms. the guests come from all over the world but that is the story of hostels ofcourse. the walking distances are good since the hostel is situated on the edge of the old town (middle of centre). hence, a very unique hostel that has a lot to offer besides a bed. greetings from the netherlands

So I am staying here for 4 nights and it has been so convenient! It is within walking distance to the city centre (princess street and the Castle) and there are bus stops down the road, however the only thing that has spoilt it is that on the 2nd night of my stay I decided to read some reviews and I discovered the terrible things people had said about it, this concerned me but I saw none if the things described in the reviews so I believe it is a perfect location for short stays and Gav was more than happy to help with any questions I had!! :)

We have created a fusion of contemporary living space with good old fashioned family hospitality. Our guests often say it's more like a family home than a hostel, with a laid back attitude and cosy friendly atmosphere. The Light House is the place to chill out and make new friends. We are only 15 minutes' walk to Edinburgh Castle. Reception is open from 7am to 10pm and check in time is from 3pm to 10pm. If you arrive in the city before 3pm, please feel free to drop off your luggage and we will give you a map and introduction to Edinburgh, then come back after 3pm to check in. We aim to provide a good night's sleep for our guests so that everyone feels refreshed the next day to explore the city or to continue with their onward journey. Therefore there is strictly no check in after 10pm. If you plan to arrive after 10pm, then please do not book with us. This rule can be extended to 11pm in case of delays in transportation. After 11pm there will be no entry until the following day. The Light House is a loving, caring and sharing place to be - we donate 10% of our profit to a housing charity. So when you stay with us, you are also helping to provide homes for people in need. We are situated in the artistic area of the city centre. Nearby are 4 cinemas, 3 theatres, a concert hall, a wide selection of restaurants, bars, coffee houses - and a co-operative super market that opens till 10pm for your essential supplies! The communal living areas are clean and cosy providing a great space to relax and unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. We have a spacious comfy lounge where you can relax and enjoy a wide selection of movies on our home cinema system with HD projector and surround sound. We have a fully equipped self catering kitchen including a dish washer...... so no need to wash up, Yey! There is also a large back garden where we host regular campfires and BBQs - so bring your guitars and best (or worst) singing voices and join us for a good old sing along around the fire; dancing is optional! There is a no smoking policy throughout the hostel with smoking area in the front garden. There is no curfew. However, we are not a party hostel, therefore the communal areas are locked at midnight and we request that guests be very quiet when returning after midnight, this is to ensure other guests who are sleeping are not disturbed.
