Very good hostel, nice price. It is a big house, and they give you this liberty, for example open kitchen and also a nice waiting room with a television, some songs and even a guitar for playing.
Good localization, 10-15 by foot from the castle and really close to the bus station that can take you to any where in the city.

Probably the cleanest hostel I have EVER stayed in. Very helpful, chilled out staff. A bit of a quiet in terms of socialising with other guests but it could have just been the time we were there. Highly recommended if you're lookng for reasonably-priced, clean, quiet accomodation

Lovely folks, lovely place, all the amenities you could ask for and a safe place to sleep. All for cheap in a great Edinburgh location. You also get access to a nice kitchen, free tea and coffee, a chilled out living room with the option to watch millions of films on the projector and get online for free! I'm sold :D

The hostel has a wonderful atmosphere--there were always people in the lounge and kitchen looking to chat. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and the place is very clean. Free coffee and tea all day is great, and I like the "no shoes" rule--it really contributes to the homey feeling of being there. There were a few minor things that were a bit of a disappointment though: the shower on the top floor did not have very good water pressure and was not very hot (and I showered at night, so I didn't think there would be a problem with this) and the floors, doors, and beds can be quite creaky, so you do have to move carefully to avoid waking up your roommates. Still, none of these were deal-breakers; the atmosphere more than made up for these shortcomings and I would stay here again if I was ever back in town.

This is the third time I stay in 'The Light House Hoste', and as in the previous two occasions, the high standards maintained in every aspect . I particularly like its homely and quiet atmospher, the friendliness and help of its Staff, its high standard of cleanliness and its fully kitted kitchen and bathroom facilities. Its proximity to Princes Street & City Centre attractions are an added advantage (A Bonus). The Light House Hostel offers a really comfortable and an enjoyable experience in all respects . I highly recommend it !

I was traveling with my brother and we loved this place!!!

The staff were all sooo friendly!! Helped us to our rooms, shoed us where everything was located and they were always willing to offer advice if asked. They were well informed on local bus routes, local attractions, cafes etc. They were great!!!

The rooms were clean and nicely spaced!! They were also cleaned daily!!! The showers were also good, lots space in the bathroom too.

The general atmosphere of the hostel was great too! Lots of opportunities to meet people. The kitchen was a great meeting place at breakfast.

Again just a lovely little hostel. The location was also good, right on a bus line and only a 15 minute walk to the royal mile!!!

I spent 3 nights in this lovely hostel, located not far from Grassmarket about 10 minutes walk. The Staff is very friendly and is on duty from 7am to midnight, they are always very helpful with assistance and information. They were very helpful also before arrival with speedy reply to my emails, giving to me all information that I required. The area around the hostel is ok, there is a supermarket with good deals and it is open until 10pm.
The hostel is clean and there is a bathroom at each floor. Sheets and towels are provided directly with a deposit of 2£.
The kitchen is fully equipped with microwave and washing-disher, plus an electric kettler with coffee and tea always at hand. We met nice people during our breakfast included in the room rate, which is a simple breakfast with toasts, jams, butter and cereals but ok for us, it is served from 7 to 10 am.
All bathrooms have shower, with very hot water, perfect for a nice shower after a day of sightseeing.
The wifi connection, free of charge, is perfect.
We had a lovely room on the last floor, beds are very comfortable and we all had very good sleeps. Just in case, if you are a light sleeper, you can have earplugs at no charge and if you like reading at bed you can ask the staff for a 'night light bed'.
All in all the Light hostel is a neat, cozy, friendly and well located place to stay in Edinburgh at a very reasonable rate....with an amazing staff always willing to help you :)
Highly recommended!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Light House is a truly unique place to stay - our bright young team will welcome you to our beautiful Georgian townhouse bursting with character and charm. We have created a fusion of contemporary living space with good old fashioned family hospitality. Our guests often say it's more like a family home than a hostel, with a laid back attitude and cosy friendly atmosphere. The Light House is the place to chill out and make new friends. We are only 15 minutes' walk to Edinburgh Castle. Reception is open from 7am to 10pm and check in time is from 3pm to 10pm. If you arrive in the city before 3pm, please feel free to drop off your luggage and we will give you a map and introduction to Edinburgh, then come back after 3pm to check in. We aim to provide a good night's sleep for our guests so that everyone feels refreshed the next day to explore the city or to continue with their onward journey. Therefore there is strictly no check in after 10pm. If you plan to arrive after 10pm, then please do not book with us. This rule can be extended to 11pm in case of delays in transportation. After 11pm there will be no entry until the following day. The Light House is a loving, caring and sharing place to be - we donate 10% of our profit to a housing charity. So when you stay with us, you are also helping to provide homes for people in need. We are situated in the artistic area of the city centre. Nearby are 4 cinemas, 3 theatres, a concert hall, a wide selection of restaurants, bars, coffee houses - and a co-operative super market that opens till 10pm for your essential supplies! The communal living areas are clean and cosy providing a great space to relax and unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. We have a spacious comfy lounge where you can relax and enjoy a wide selection of movies on our home cinema system with HD projector and surround sound. We have a fully equipped self catering kitchen including a dish washer...... so no need to wash up, Yey! There is also a large back garden where we host regular campfires and BBQs - so bring your guitars and best (or worst) singing voices and join us for a good old sing along around the fire; dancing is optional! We provide all these free stuff: Free breakfast consisting cereal, toast, jam, butter spread, marmalade, tea and coffee. Free tea and coffee all day. Free Wi-Fi, free internet access on a desk top computer. Free lockers, free towel hire, free linen. Free power adaptor hire, free reading light hire. Free ear plugs, free shower gel. We offer a variety of bright and spacious rooms ranging from a 2-bed private room to a 10-bed dorm. The 2-bed private room has a double bed and a single bed - so it can accommodate up to a family of 3. We operate a no shoes policy in The Light House to keep the house in spotless order, a shoe rack and slippers are provided at the entrance making it feel like a real home from home. There is a no smoking policy throughout the hostel with smoking area in the front garden. There is no curfew. However, we are not a party hostel, therefore the communal areas are locked at midnight and we request that guests be very quiet when returning after midnight, this is to ensure other guests who are sleeping are not disturbed. Check-in is after 15:00 only - and till 22:00. Check-out by 10:30. Reception is open from 7:00 to 22:00. Cancellation policy is 72 hours in advance. ... more   less
