“Not good if you're claustrophobic!”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

I brought my 75 year old mother all the way from Australia and one of the main thing she wanted to do was the festival, I realise it is probably the most popular time of the year, but the value for money is disgusting. Yes location is fabulous but that's the only positive I have.
A windowless shoebox with an uncomfortable bed and a wafer for a pillow. No coffee/ tea making facilities and we even had to call from our mobile to ask them to turn our air con down, it's an individual room air con but we couldn't be trusted to control our own comfort. I'm personally flabbergasted by the number of positive comments, gosh I wish I could have been one!

Thank you for your review. Here at Tune Hotels we believe we offer value for money with the prices over the festival being up to half the price of our competitors. We do not hide away from the fact that our rooms are space efficient with the average size being 10 to 11 square feet. There is also the option to book a room with a window or without; we would never put anyone into a room without a window unless they have booked it. Tea and Coffee facilities are available from our reception area for a small charge and the air con can be controlled from the room or assistance again can be given from the front desk. I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay and we are aware that our concept does not suite everyone.

We stayed at the Tune hotel at the end of July and it delivered a clean and central location, it would be ideal if you are looking for just a cheap couple of nights as it is a great base.

We were staying there for five nights and were traveling to Glasgow for the Games. As we were planning to be out most of the day we opted for the cheaper room with no windows which as the room was so very small it felt a bit claustrophobic and there is no where to put anything. We did opt for the towel option, however we only got one bath towel each and one floor towel, no hand towels and they only get replaced after three days.

Thank you for your review, we are glad to hear you found the hotel clean enjoyed our location and realised the hotel is a great base to explore Edinburgh. The average size of our rooms are 10 to 11 square meters, we advise that you are able to utilise the planned space under the bed which will give you more space to move around the room. Additional towel and toiletries sets can be purchased from reception at a cost of just £2.00. Depending on how your booking is made a comfort package may have also been included which would enable you to come down to reception at any time and collect fresh towels free of charge. Thank you again for your review.

This was our first stay at Tune Hotel Haymarket, but having stayed at one of the Tune Hotels in London on a previous occation we knew what we were in for.

We visited the week before the festivals started and managed to get 4 nights for around £66 per night, which was a pretty good rate compared to other hotels in the area.

The rooms are small, probably a bit to small for us this time (as we were travelling with two huge suitcases). The hotel itself opened last year and our room was modern and spotlessly clean. Rooms are cleaned every 3 nights (you can pay extra to have it cleaned earlier). Towels and other toiletries is not included in the rate, but can be bought from the reception. We paid £12 for Wi-Fi access for our entire stay (this included access for up to 4 devices). Unfortunately the connection was terribly slow.

The hotel is located directly across the road from Haymarket Rail Station, handy if you arrive by train as we did. The location is also convenient for travelling from and to the airport as both the tram and the airlink (bus) has stops right outside the hotel. The city centre itself is a 15-20 minutes walk away, but can easily be reached by tram.

With a couple of more square meters of room, better Wi-Fi and a more central location this would definitly have been a 5/5 for me.

I am glad to hear you got a great deal during the festival, we are currently offering rooms for sale during this period for up to half the price of hotels offering a similar standard. We are glad to hear you found the hotel modern and spotlessly clean but also sorry to hear you found our Wi-Fi connection slow, we provide a high speed internet connection and usually have few issues regarding speed. Thank you for your comments regarding location as you mentioned we are in an ideal location for both traveling to the Airport and just a 15 minute walk into the city and Princess Street.

The hotel itself on the surface is okay. However at 200 for 2 nights room only, I'd expect better. When we arrived, the staff didn't utter the words "enjoy your stay!" Maybe they've learned not to as people are not happy with the place. Initially, we had to pay to check our bags in to storage - which I'd have expected to be complimentary. We also had to do the same on the last day.

The room was an internal room so no window (windows cost 40 quid per night in these parts). That would have been fine, except it was tiny - actually the smallest room I have ever stayed in and it became very oppressive. There wasn't even enough room to walk around the bed as there was a pillar at one side that left a three inch space to walk through.

The bed was okay for me, but my partner, who is very slim, woke up sore. The mattress was very very firm - apparently that's what a five star bed is like (the hotel boast of the quality of their beds.) Also, we only had one wafer thin pillow each - not enough when you used 2 or 3 at home. We had to resort to folding the towels to have a bit of extra support. Also, the duvet was thin and felt more like a duvet cover with a thin sheet in between it. There were no tea and coffee making facilities in the room either. Not good when you want a cuppa in the morning. You can however go down and buy an overpriced tea or coffee from a machine. I've come to expect those facilities as standard, but clearly not.

There were three plugs at one side of the room. That's ample for a room, but all at the one side. I had to clamber over my partner to check the phone for the time etc. I couldn't walk round as I couldn't fit past the pillar. Very badly planned for a room - I must apologise to the hotel for not being a size zero model, who these spaces are clearly designed for!

The room was boiling hot and the air conditioning unit was noisy and woke me up several times during the night.

At the end of the stay, when checking out, the staff didn't say "I hope up enjoyed your stay" or anything I that ilk. They simply said "checkout, okay" nodded and took the key. They then returned our bags and managed to muster up a smile.

On the plus side, it's a decent location and has good transport links. It was also clean. However, I'll never be back to this hotel again. I'd sooner stay in the hostel. Same facilities and a quarter of the price.

Thank you for your review, I am sorry to hear that you did not find our staff friendly, from previous reviews you will see that we are constantly receiving compliments regarding our team on how we are always friendly and happy to help so not quite sure what went wrong with your experience. Our team take pride in being warm, friendly and welcoming. Here at the Tune Hotel Haymarket we have both rooms with window and without with the average size of our rooms 10 to 11 square feet. I am also sorry to hear you did not find our new beds comfortable. Our beds are by Hypnos which are also supplied to 4 and 5 * hotels. Regarding the tea / coffee prices, we believe £1.30 for a tea and £1.70 for a freshly ground Cappuccino or latte is very reasonable compared other coffee vendors. On a positive note I am glad to hear you found the location good and the hotel clean. We value both positive and negative feedback so thank you again for your review.

Near the train station, stop for bus and tram. 10-15 min walk into edinburgh depending on how fast you walk.
we went for the extra's wi- Fi, towels etc. the rooms were small as others have said and you would not spend a week here. Be warned only 4 hangers between 2 of you and no draw space. That could be rectified, there is space. Kept none hanging clothes in the suitcase under the bed.
The room was clean and modern. All staff very friendly and helpful. They will lend you adapter so you can use your shaver or electric toothbrush. Why this was not there in the first place is baffling!
The key problem is the extremely hard beds. Why? It took till the 3rd night to get un broken sleep.
I think I was exhausted by this time. They did put a duvet on the mattress in an effort to soften.
Why not have some toppers put on the beds. If the beds were sorted would not hesitate to go back. breakfast next door was very reasonable. We were there 4 days, and after 3 the room gets cleaned. This was done. In terms of cost, there during the festival, so not cheap. A lot different out of the festival.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the back.

Thank you for your review. I am glad to hear you found our rooms clean and modern with our team friendly and helpful. I am sorry to hear that you did not find our beds comfortable but glad to hear our team our staff assisted in an effort to rectify the situation. We believe we have a very competitive pricing structure during the Edinburgh Festival and believe you will find it hard to book another hotel that matches our prices for our quality offering during this period; hotels of a similar standard are monitored by ourselves and are often displaying prices near to double what we are currently offering.

Hotel well located, clean but very, very small room. We knew that there was no service but there was nowhere to put clothes. So while I am happy, for the price you pay to operate out of my suitcase, there is an issue when there is no room other than on the bed to open your case. The pillows were dreadful and we had to ask for more and was surprised that we were not charged, because that is the trap they charge for everything. Upon our arrival we were an hour early for the room, but we could pay extra for early check-in, which meant they had a room available. So when we declined we enquired about leaving our luggage and there was a cloaking fee. Very mean. Even when we vacated the hotel we had to cloak our bags and pay again. We actually did not consider that this hotel was good value and thought it overpriced. Added with the attitude of trying to get more money out of people we would not stay there again or recommend it.

Thank you for your review and comments regarding our location and cleanliness. Here at the Tune Hotel Haymarket we operate on a pay as you go system, we believe that you should only pay for the items you use within the room, why pay for a hairdryer if you are just not going to use it. We also charge a small fee of £2.00 per bag for luggage storage which is becoming common practice within Edinburgh, It would cost £9.00 to store luggage at Waverley Train Station per item and they are not open 24/7 so we believe our luggage storage is a great deal..

Located in a great spot! Near a tram stop and across from a train station. And easy to walk to a lot of things.
Very clean and modern.
We were annoyed by the lack of servicing, we read that it was every 3 days however it never happened. We had to dispose of our own rubbish and request toilet paper.. Also no space for storing luggage, even though they suggest under the bed - this is not right.
Air con couldn't be set to a low temp, we had a room without a window so we were very hot at night.
We paid a steep price for the room but didn't feel like it was value for money at all.
Would probably stay again if the price was cheaper for a bigger room, and if servicing was more frequent.

Thank you for your review and comments regarding location with Haymarket Train Station located just across the road from the hotel and the bus and tram stop also on our doorstep. We service our rooms after every third night to enable us to lower cost and in turn sell our rooms cheaper, this is also done to compliment environmental impact and works with the lifestyle approach to our concept. I am sorry to hear that you had to dispose of your own rubbish, we recommend leaving excess outside your door in the morning and our team would dispose of it, this is however something we are going to look in to further and will probably be introducing a different inclusive service in the near future that will enhance our guest’s experience. Additional toilet rolls can be collected or requested from the front desk team at any time and air conditioning temperatures can also be adjusted to your preference from the front desk. Minor changes can be undertaken in room however we are always happy to increase or decrease temperatures of individual rooms from the central control.
