“Great location”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

We chose this hotel primarily due to its location as we travelled by train. Charging £2 per bag to store luggage seems a bit unnecessary, but it's worth paying for the convenience.
There are a lot of charges for extras, which are explained clearly in advance. I do feel that this are a bit excessive though - £4 to make the tv in your room work!
Staff were very polite and helpful.

Thank you for your review. Here at Tune Hotels we offer a pay as you use system. We believe that you should only pay for the items you use. If you are visiting Edinburgh there is lots to see/do and you may not have time to watch the TV, so it would be your decision if you book through the Tune Hotel website to include the TV or not. We charge just £2.00 per bag for luggage storage that we believe to be very reasonable and fair. If you were to store luggage at Waverley train station it would cost around £9.00 per bag and they don’t open 24/7. It is good to hear you found our front desk staff polite and helpful. We hope you come back soon.

Just came back from a few days at the Edinburgh festival, booked last minute so hotel options were limited. I booked the Tune hotel on a 3rd party site but was slightly apprehensive after reading some of the recent negative reviews here. My experience was much more positive.

The hotel is very new and the rooms are modern and very clean. I booked a window room. It was compact but fine for me. TV in room. Proper air conditioning which was quiet (not noisy as others have stated). Bathroom very compact but super clean and modern with a proper thermostatically controlled shower with decent pressure. Wifi (included in my package) was also very good and didn't experience any problems. I used it extensively to book my tickets for the fringe shows and worked fine. Large white towels provided as well as soap and shower gel. I don't need anything more for the bathroom. I see they only clean the rooms every 3 days. That's fine with me and for a short stay, I didn't need the room cleaning.

The bed was OK (a little firm but comfortable) with clean white sheets and duvet. Proper black out curtains also so I slept well.

The location of the hotel is directly opposite Haymarket train station which was super convenient to and from the train to London or direct tram to the airport which saved a lot of hassle with luggage through the crowded city at Festival time. The new tram line is also super convenient with a stop directly across the road as well as bus stops. Download the Transport for Edinburgh official app for easy directions by bus or tram to anywhere in town. Day tickets can be purchase from the machine at the tram stop for £3.50. There is also a Starbucks and M&S food store adjoining the station so 1 minute walk away as well as the platform 5 bar / cafe adjoining the hotel so that was perfect for my morning breakfast needs.

Check in and out was easy. Staff were helpful and friendly. Yes, they charged £2 to store my bag but that was OK. I would definitely go back for the modern cleanliness and super convenient location. The only minor downside was that the walls are thin and you could hear everything in the corridor as well as people slamming doors (the doors are a tight fit so you have to pull them to close and they make a loud noise it seems). Fortunately other hotel guests were quiet so no real issue there. I see there are windowless rooms in the central part of the floor plan. It's nice to have a window to see what the weather is like outside but if your budget is limited, it wouldn't be a problem for me.

For a basic, budget hotel, it scored very well. If you want a luxury full service experience and money is no object, go elsewhere.

Room Tip: choose a window room.

Having read some of the reviews on Trip Advisor about this hotel, we had a few small worries. However, they we're all completely unfounded.
In this review, we hope to dispel some of the negatives that others have posted.
Firstly parking.
There is no parking at the hotel - though this is made very clear at the time of booking. The hotel is in the centre of Scotland's capital city... There is limited parking anywhere!
Upon arriving at the hotel, I dashed inside and asked the reception staff where the nearest long stay car park was. He was unbelievably helpful, directing us to Semple Street and offering to prepare our paperwork whilst we went to park.
Secondly small rooms.
The rooms are fantastic! They're compact, admittedly, but comments about not being able to walk around the bed are, in our experiences, unfounded. I was able to walk around the bed and my 6'3" tall fiancé had no issue with either the size of the nor a lack of space surrounding it. We had a room on the second floor. Our view, though not panoramic as such, was a lovely view of the tenements across a large, cobbled courtyard with many spires in the background.
Thirdly the facilities and the hotel's 'pay as you go' approach.
The ethos of the hotel is made more than clear on their website. We paid a very small fee for the additional facilities that we required and were more than happy with this. It must be noted that the adjoining pub, Platform 5, serves excellent food that is fantastic in value. The pub itself is large, bright an airy. We enjoyed a booth complete with its own telly whilst dining there.
Finally the staff and value for money.
The staff were unbelievably polite and went to every length to make sure that our stay was enjoyable despite the hotel being unbelievably busy due to it being the Festival. Every one was friendly and it is apparent that they constantly act upon feedback - for example the placing of polite signs near to the internal doors, reminding guests to ensure said doors close quietly.
There is some mention of the price of a coffee - there is a Starbucks directly across the road, the pub serves coffee and if you walk two minutes to the right, we discovered a fantastic artisan bakery and coffee shop, think it was called Jacobs. Some mention rooms without windows... This is a choice you make when booking, not a surprise upon arrival. Want a window? select 'room with window' when booking!
We feel that the hotel did represent good value for money but must add that this was during the Fringe Festival and Royal Military Tattoo, during which prices are renowned for rising due to the excess demand. Despite this, we feel strongly that the hotel was great value for money. We booked directly via the hotel's website. It was immaculate, very well located and had all we needed for an enjoyable trip.
Ignore the negative reviews, read their own website and understand their ethos - if you agree with their vision, this hotel is for you. We will definitely recommend Tune Hotels Haymarket and hope to visit again soon.

This hotel was relatively inexpensive and provided everything you would expect from a three star hotel. The rooms were small but clean, the bed was comfortable and there was an airconditioner, which was useful in the Summer. It was only a short walk to the main restaurant district and tourist attractions and the staff were friendly and unobtrusive. Very impressive three star hotel, although perhaps a slightly bigger room would have been nice.

Many thanks for your review. Glad you were satisfied at 3 star standard - actually we are 3 star new concept designation with Visit Scotland, so not judged at the normal hotel 3 star rating level, so pleased that we have met your expectations. Hope that we see you again soon. Prices are always high in Edinburgh during Fringe and August. Sometimes catches people out. Tune Hotel Haymarket regularly offers rooms at half some rates during this period.

Having just stayed one night at the Tune hotel at the end of July before a flight I had to leave a review on this little gem. We have already booked to return again before a flight later in the year and would happily stay here over a number of the other chain hotels for value and service.

Excellent location - it is directly opposite Haymarket train station and is serviced by several bus routes and the new tram system stops outside. It is a short walk (5-10minutes) along to Princes street or the opposite direction along to Murrayfield.

The staff couldn't be faulted very helpful and friendly whenever we needed to approach them. Reception staff very helpful when we needed to print out some boarding passes. There are also some tablets in the reception area that you can use to access the internet.

There is a pub/restaurant attached to the hotel - can't comment much on it - we ended up eating elsewhere as it was very busy and full. Appears a social hub for workers when they finish so must be pretty good.

The room - well it is a 'budget' hotel so didn't initially expect much but we were in for a surprise and both found it more than comfortable. We did have all of the add on's to the room - TV, internet, towels. You will have to of course factor this in to your price you pay. It would suit someone well if it is just a bed to sleep in and you don't have to pay for the tv remote etc. The rooms are small but even with two suitcases we found it fine enough. The room and hotel is very modern and spotlessly clean.

Would highly recommend this to anyone wanting somewhere to stay in Edinburgh that is a great location, excellent and friendly staff and good value for money.

The room was good value for Edinburgh, especially during the Festival - and would be even cheaper if you don't mind a windowless room. It was clean, modern, quiet and comfortable, but you have to be aware of what to expect. Extras are chargeable, including towels, daily room servicing, use of TV, leaving suitcases etc, and there are no facilities to make hot drinks in the room. The room was very small, without a wardrobe - just an open-plan half/length rail - and electric sockets were well-hidden behind a pull-down table. BUT, if you just want a good value place to sleep, it's absolutely fine. The location is great, directly opposite Haymarket train station and on a tramline between the airport and the centre. A reasonably fit person could walk to the Royal Mile in about 15 minutes. The Tune shares the building with the Platform 5 bar/restaurant, which seems to have a decent menu, and I can vouch for the great breakfast. I'd definitely use the hotel again.

Sounds like in general you had a great time here. Actually Platform5 shares the building with us as they rent the space from us, however, you are right they do a good value job just like us. Hope we see you back again soon.

Stayed here in june for one direction concert and its a lovely hotel and room was clean and very modern we had the windowless room and it was fine just a little warm and air con not too good in room we had towels and wifi included in our room price/deal but be warned there are alot of extras to pay for which are not included and beware if you turning up early you need to pay extra to get in you room £15 for 3hours before £10 2 hours before and £5 1 hour before check in,you think its good value but with alot of hidden extras its not really value but i booked through booking.com and was lucky we paid £59 and got everything included so we got great value for money.the location is excellent right on doorstep of haymarket railway station and if you turn left at entrance of hotel and walk for 5-10 mins your on princes st with loads of shops and eateries so dont by pass this place it is fantastic location and very modern and clean.the beds were very comfy and bathroom and room had ample room but would only be good for couple of nights at most in a windowless room

Thank you for your comments regarding the hotel being clean and modern, we have been open now for just a year and a half so everything is still nice and new. I am sorry to hear you found the room a little warm. The air con can be adjusted in the room or for further assistance our front desk team are also able to adjust the temperature even further to suite your needs. Here at Tune Hotels we believe you should only pay for the things in the room you use. If you are out in Edinburgh or even at a one direction concert there would be little time to watch the TV so you can decide if you want to pay for it or not. We are glad you found our location good and enjoyed the comforts of the hotel. We will look forward to welcoming you back soon.
