Great accommodation for the Fringe Festival. Could not ask for a better location. Stayed for two nights over a weekend in August. Free breakfast available if required till close to lunchtime. Good deals on food in Malones Pub downstairs. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Stayed here with a few friends during the festival and was very happy wih the location, cleanliness and price. Staff very friendly with a good bar downstairs serving lovely pub food. Thought the noise of the very busy bar might carry up to the rooms but it didn't, and slept well in the comfy beds. Would definitely recommend as a base to explore Edinburgh.

I stayed here for 4 nights in July 2013, and had a really good time, but I just can't give it a rave review as there are far too many little improvements that need to be made first.

The positives:
- Location is perfect. Walking distance to everything, close to grocery stores, and there's a great bar downstairs
- Good price/value
- Comfortable beds, spacious rooms

The negatives:
- Only one light for the entire dorm room. The dorm rooms are big, but there's just the one overhead light, which is inconvenient with people coming in at all hours of the night.

- No common room. The kitchen seats 6 people, so you can't really hang out there either. People do socialize in the dorm rooms, however.

- Kitchen does not have a stove or oven, and there's just one tiny bar fridge for the whole hostel, but that fridge also has all the milk and breakfast stuff, so there's no room to store personal food

- No signs in the kitchen, telling people to wash their own dishes. They really need to put signs up in the kitchen, telling people to wash and dry their own dishes. Also, they should have a few more tea towels in there so that people can actually dry their dishes. There was just one, dirty looking dishcloth during my 4-night stay there.

- Tiny, dysfunctional showers. The shower stalls are small and the showerheads are not movable, so you have to stand close to the edge of the stall to properly rinse. Then, even with the bathroom doors closed, the shower curtain continually blows in on you, unless you weigh it down with something, so it always touches you, which is sort of gross.

- No shampoo or soap in the showers

- The rooms are not thoroughly cleaned often. I stayed in the 12-bed mixed dorm. It was clean when I got there, but by the end of my stay, there was a lot of visible lint, hair, etc. on the black carpet. I don't think they vacuum that more than once a week, and they really need to.

- If you are on the 'first' floor of the hostel, you can hear the singing/debauchery from the pub downstairs. But they do turn off the music and noise around 1am

- Clueless staff. As others have mentioned, the hostel seems to be an after thought to the bar downstairs, and I agree with this fully. There is hostel staff working there during normal business hours, but after that, it's actually the bar staff who let in new guests and tell them the rules and whatnot. And the bar staff (through no fault of their own) have no idea what they're talking about or doing. I heard staff tell new guests that breakfast started at 630am, 7am, 730am, 8am, various times for check out, etc. One night, there was a girl who works in the bar downstairs folding the clean linens on the kitchen floor. She wasn't sure what she was doing or why she was folding laundry when she was hired to work in a bar, and I'm not so sure why either. They should just make a general Information for Incoming Guests sheet that they can give to all the new arrivals at the hostel.

- No security. You have to ring a buzzer to be let in... or you can just walk in through the bar downstairs, no questions asked. People rarely lock the door of the dorm rooms, so the rooms are pretty much open to the public. There are small lockers to store small valuables, but nothing for your big bags. Also, the small lockers are located right opposite the entrance to the dorm rooms, so if someone is trying to get into their locker, you often accidentally open the door right into them.

So overall, I had a good stay here, but as you can see from the list, there are a lot of improvements that could and should be made.

Took out 3 rooms for a party of 24. The staff were excellent and arranged dinner and breakfast in the pub below. The rooms were clean and well laid out. Perfect location too, right next to the Grassmarket. Highly recommended.

Stayed three nights with friends. Really clean and well kept rooms and bathrooms. Friendly staff. Good prices. Even though it's above a bar, the hostel is quiet. Great location - right in the city centre. Would highly recommend this place!
