“Great little café run by a charity. Extremely friendly”
Reviewed 3 April 2014

I found this place by accident whilst taking a short cut down to Holyrood. It was lunchtime and it looked interesting so I went in.

I had a club sandwich which was the equal of many I've had in very good hotels. The staff are really friendly and the whole place has a nice atmosphere.

It's run by a charity for people who are in 'recovery' so it isn't your average café. It's a place I would definitely go back to.

“Great food, convenient location, nice atmosphere”
Reviewed 17 March 2014

We went there for brunch with our small children. Its got lots of toys for children, the food was great, and the loo was clean & spacious, with extra bits for toiletting children!

“Lovely, cheap and a worthwhile cause.”
Reviewed 23 February 2014

We were staying nearby and had time to kill between checking out and getting the train. We'd noticed this cafe earlier and it looked like the kind of friendly and easy going place that wouldn't mind us crashing for a bit.

How right we were. It was only once inside that we discovered it was a charitable concern helping recovering alcoholics and drug users. It is staffed by recovering volunteers and the place has a friendly, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. There are two prices, with a reduction for those on benefits. There are books to read and games to play and people are encouraged to spend as much time there as they want.

However, no matter how worthy a place or cause is it still needs to provide proper service and food. Serenity Cafe does this. Even paying full prices it was the cheapest breakfast we had in Edinburgh. The food was great and they didn't skimp on the portions. Service was efficient and friendly.

Even if it wasn't a worthy cause we'd still go back and next time we'll probably go for lunch as some of the stuff on the menu looked really tempting.

“Great Value close to Holyrood”
Reviewed 19 February 2014

Met up with an old friend for a 'Easy Long Lunch' as we had a lot of catching up to do. 'Serenity' has a nice easy atmosphere and we both had the huge 'Burgers' with all the trimmings. They make them to order so you have to wait a few minutes but the result is mouthwatering and they come with chips & salad. On a cold misty day the Hot Chocolates also hit the spot, super creamy. At £12.50 for the two of us for burgers & chocolates this was a bargain.

“Fabulous Cafe”
Reviewed 8 January 2014

The cafe is on a lane near the bottom end of The Royal Mile and Holyrood Road just round the corner from the MacDonald Hotel and is well worth seeking out. The first rule of a great Café is good coffee and the steaming Latte's definitely hit the spot on a crisp (but sunny) late Sunday morning just after Xmas. The menu is excellent value (understatement) with great variety and the food was delicious with my Club Sandwich probably the best I have had, just exactly what I was looking for. Mrs Jock had the Basil Pesto Mozzarella Tomato Toastie and again the presentation (no cheap bread in sight ;-) ) was superb with a taste to match according to Mrs Jock.
We will definitely return on our next visit to the city and look forward to trying the likes of the Moroccan Stew and Chorizo and Chicken Skewers which sound delicious.
To all the team at The Serenity Café, keep up the good work :-)
