Not far from the center, great selection of bottles of scotch. Nice host philosopher. Typical scottish breakfast. Confortable room and big bathroom. I suggest to stay here in case you visit Edinburgh.

A great spot a couple of miles outside the city center. This suited us perfectly, as it was very quiet while sleeping, and yet an easy walk (for us, we like walking!) to the city. We stayed for 5 nights, and our room was on the third floor (American). The quaint stairs and decor added to the charm, and we didn't find the two flights of stairs to our room a problem. We had a family room, with three beds, which were comfortable and a large bathroom (by European standards). All very nicely appointed. Breakfast were great, and we even tried some of the haggis and black pudding... Hmmm... my daughter enjoyed, but the parents thought haggis and black pudding best left to the locals! The hosts were very helpful, and were always around to get a cab for us, or to offer advice.

Beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder and for everyone the World is indeed different and for such an old saying to be so true today with all the Information on our Computers, Phones, Ipads and all at our Fingertips, to be happy with your chosen purchase as this reviewer has written certainly makes me very happy.

It is hard anywhere in the World to be perfect all the time and wee in The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia while striving to achieve our best know that we are fallible so for this Guest to find so many happy aspects of the Hotel from our endeavours is very, very pleasing indeed, their comments from Sleeping, Walking, oops nearly wrote Sleep walking there, tee hee, quaint stairs, location and our legendary breakies, then Wow Wee, thank you Reviewer..

Our family stayed at Ceilidh-Donia for 3 days on our way back home south to England after enjoying a week in the highlands at Loch Rannoch in Perthshire.

The hotel has an excellent location in Edinburgh’s inner suburbs. Being only a short bus ride (£1.35) to the Royal Mile and Princess Street. For night owls the return taxi home will cost you between £8-£10. Edinburgh airport is roughly 40 minutes by taxi and Waverley train station approximately 10-15 minutes. If travelling by car there is limited parking available on the nearby streets.

Ceilidh-Donia is very much a family Metro hotel run by Max and Annette Preston with their two loveable dogs. A traditional house that has been converted to a hotel with rooms over 3 floors in a quite location. There is no lift so you will need to be super fit to access the upper floors. The exercise will certainly help keep you in good shape to traverse the hilly streets and many steps to be found in Edinburgh's city center!!

The bedrooms are airy and spacious, with comfortable beds and showers on-suite. The room service is amazing. We had left our room in total shambles whilst taking breakfast (as one does), on our on return the bedroom had been totally transformed. Our clothes had been neaten and tidied and put out on the bed as if we had our own private butler.

Annette cooks and offers a very handsome breakfast including a selection of traditional porridge, cereals and fruits. To be followed by a cooked Scottish breakfast with black pudding and haggis or an English breakfast sans haggis and black pudding. Either will certainly energize you for the day. Bar snacks are available during the day and there is a pizza delivery service if needed.

In the evening, you may be lucky enough to be invited by Max and Annette to join them for a drink at their bar, when Max will be pleased to offer a drink from his collection of malts. Then maybe, dependent on the optimum consumption, deliver a recitation of poems. Examples of Max's own poetry may be found on the reverse of the breakfast menus.

Our family felt very much at home. We enjoyed the jocular banter, would certainly use again and recommend to friends.

Room Tip: If you are not fit and or have a lot of luggage, request a room on the ground floor.

What a very descriptive review, I should hire this reviewer as my publicist, seriously though it takes time to write a review and whether it is short or long, Annette the Staff and I greatly appreciate every thought reviewers put on paper, oops I mean Computer, tee, hee, and just a wee correction it is only two floors + the ground floor and as with most Townhouse Hotels in the UK there are indeed no Lift/Elevators but we will take Guest Bags up stairs if they require it.

Nice to know that Anne/Jill and the Girls are appreciated for the tidy work and helping us achieve a high level of cleanliness throughout our Hotel.

We are Indeed a Metro Hotel now which is a new UK wide classification and is basically a Full Hotel with all the usual services but does not now need to have A La Carte Restaurant but it must offer Snacks and be in 10 minutes walking distance of a choice of good quality Restaurants.

All our Guests a indeed very welcome to sample some of Scotland Finest Whiskies with me at any time and Indeed I have been known to recite some of my Poemetry Collection to the unsuspecting ears of Guests from time to time, we hope this reviewer certainly comes back to us in the future as he never paid for the Tap Water in his Whiskies, tee hee..

Spent 4 nights at this place , and it was almost faultless. But i dont expect perfection ,everywhere has its little problems and people make too much fuss about stupid things. I have stayed in some of the best hotels in London and i am constantly let down by Breakfast Standards and poor service with people who have little knowledge of the english language, but not here, all of the staff were friendly , helpful and accomodating. And the rooms were clean , tidy and and more than adequate (if a little warm on the top floor at times-fan provided) . Thanks Folks

Lovely Unfussy review and Indeed as the review points out it is hard to achieve perfection, one of my little thoughts is that we pay the same if not more to our Staff that the Larger Multi Chain Hotels do but the difference in the Room rates compared to Wage rates is huge compared to our charges so I am extremely happy that the reviewer thought our level of service and especially cleanliness was of a very acceptable standard, one last thought, at the larger Hotels it is hard to get a Hot Cooked to order Breakfast and for me a Hot Breakie is not just nice it is a necessity..

A very nice little hotel in Edinburgh. Homecooked breakfast was excellent, very friendly and helpful staff and comfortable rooms. I really felt like home away from home.
The hotel is a little bit outside the city centre, but the service more than weighs up for that. And when the buses go frequently just around the corner, there's really not a problem. The buses are cheap as well. And lets not forget that the neighbourhood is quiet, so you get a decent night sleep after a whole day of sightseeing. I was travelling solo, but I recommend it for everyone!

Even the dogs are friendly! :)

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the street. Its quiet and virtually no traffic anyway, but you get the morning...

We like to think that for our guests we will go to the ends of the Earth to make sure they receive the level of service our Wee Hotel is recognised for and then I thought Hey we are at the Ends of the Earth, Edinburgh of course where else, tee, hee, and definitely very glad that as a lone traveller the Reviewer found our Location and Edinburgh to be a safe friendly place to visit..

We stayed at the Ceilidh-Donia for 2 nights and enjoyed our stay. Our Hosts were very helpful and we were made to feel welcome. Our room was large and well appointed. Close to good dining and transportation. Quiet neighbourhood too. If your room is on the top floor, you have some stairs (40 or so) to climb, so if this is a problem, mention this on booking to get a room on the first or second floor. The breakfasts are wonderful, with many choices and the food great! We would stay there again.

Thanks to this reviewer for commenting on our location which from their point of view was a quiet location and has good a great Bus service, just 10 minutes into Town with a lot of choices nearby to Dine, Thai, Indian, Argentinean, Brazilian, Tibetan, Italian, Chinese and of course British Restaurants oops and Fish n Chips Shops
all within 3 mins to 15 mins walk from the Hotel, and again just a slight point to make In the UK all Hotel's like ours have a Ground Floor, 1st and 2nd or more but it does not count as 3 Floors, so we actually only have 2 floors..

My wife and I stayed in Ceilidh-Donia Hotel for 2 nights. Looking at all the positive reviews of this hotel we would have to agree with most of the comments. The only criticism we would have is that there are 42 stairs to the top rooms and no lift. This should be stated when advertising rooms. Our room was a twin room at the top of the house( clean and tidy with all accessories) and it should, in our opinion be advertised as a single room as the skylight slanted ceiling removes a large portion of space. A curtain on this skylight would have helped as the room became very bright in early morning. Max and Lynette were friendly, helpful and informative. The location was quiet and very safe and bus stops to the town centre were close by.

Room Tip: If you are of a certain age be sure to look for a room on ground or 1st floor.

Oh Those Stairs! but what a great view you will get from that room of Edinburgh's Ancient Volcano Arthurs Seat, legends say it is connected to the Round Table/Nights King Arthur.
We are listed as a Town House Hotel and like 100's of other Townhouse Hotels throughout the UK they probable do not have Lifts/Elevators, and especially as this Hotel has only two floors.

The Room is classified as a Twin by the Scottish Tourist Board and meets all requirements needed, many People say that they like this room because of the Coombed Ceilings adding to its character, and yes maybe the rooms is bright in the months of May and June as it is East facing and gets direct Sunlight at Sunrise, we are in the process of fitting Blinds to all the rooms in the Hotel..

We hope the other positives about the Hotel may bring this reviewer back to us and book a First floor or Ground floor room with us and I am sure there will be a Wee Dram or two of my Finest Scottish Whisky on Hand..
