“Great last minute find!”
Reviewed 31 July 2013

Found ourselves in Scotland with no accommodation booking and foolish of us, didn't realise The Open Golf was on. Call the Ceilidh-Donia on the off chance of a last minute availability and luckily enough we snatched up the last room for a good rate. Max (owner) was awesome and very very friendly, room was average size for European Rooms and bathroom was great. Breakfast was home cooked and delicious and the whole stay was charming, not one complaint.

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for you thoughtful review, you did well getting a room when The Open Golf was on in Edinburgh and thanks for mentioning that our Breakfast were to your liking and were delicious.
All Townhouse Hotels and Indeed Guest Houses/BnBs have all different sizes and shapes to their Rooms and of course will never ever match the purpose built mass produced Rooms that the International players offer to the traveller but you can be assured that you won’t find two rooms the same as each other in the part of this great Hospitality Business that we all work in, In Bonnie Scotland..

Nice neighborhood, big and clean room, friendly staff and owners and very good breakfast. The bed could have been a little bit softer and it creaked on every move. A cute dog minds its own business... Walking distance from the city center if its not raining :)

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for taking the time to write, I am glad we hit most points for you on your stay with us, sorry that you found the Bed no to your liking, we have used the same makers of beds and mattresses for app 25 years and they are called Blind Craft who as their name suggest most of their Staff are partially or totally Blind, Beds are very, very subjective unfortunately but delighted that you liked our Golden Retriever Dog called Keilidh..

We really enjoyed being away from the noise and bustle of downtown and chose to walk the half hour even though the bus is very convenient. The breakfast options were lovely, the staff extremely hospitable and there is a little pub and nice deck outside to sit and enjoy. We will recommend this to our friends.

Dear Reviweee

Many Moons of thanks for your Sparkling Review, short and sweet and very petite and hits the spot for me, quiet with a great Breakfast to start the Day and then a healthy walk into Town and when you come back a nice garden and pond to relax bye and sip your glass of Beer or Wine from our well stocked Bar..

We had an outstanding stay at Hotel Ceilidh-Donia. Host was friendly and wonderful. The location is great in a nice neighborhood which is close to the main bus lines. Lots of cool pubs close. Host did a wonderful job providing information and answering questions. Also, breakfast choices were plentiful and delicious. Room was clean and cozy and we really enjoyed our stay.

Dear Reviewee

Many Moons of thanks for a Sparkling Review, glad that you were happy with the big choice of Local Pubs near our Hotel and with some of them serving good quality Pub Scran (Scottish for Food).

We also like to give our Guests lots of Information about Edinburgh and our neighbourhood on or before arrival as we never forget that everything is new to you. Breakfast is a very important start to every person’s day and especially when on holiday, we hope that our large choice helps make you feel like you are having a treat, as I know that the other 50 odd weeks of the year we are all guilty of skipping Breakie sometimes..

Spent three fantastic evenings in this hotel and it is a tribute to the owners, Max and Annette. The rooms were very clean and spacious. The breakfast was outstanding and it was a real treat spending time with the owners in the evenings. Great location and a place that is worth seeking out. Very knowledgeable hosts regarding good restaurants as well.

Room Tip: Just let the owners know your preference.

Dear Reviewee

Many Moons of thanks for a terrific review of our Hotel, having a lot of years behind us in Life and in the Hotel business, Annette and I hope that the Information we can give to our Traveling Guests can help them to appreciate Edinburgh and its History, I do not think that there are many Cities in Europe that can match such a diversity of Edinburgh's rich Topography, History, Science, Inventions and Discoveries.

Glad that you loved our Breakfast, Janet and Annette love to see happy Smiley Guest's enjoy their freshly cooked food, just an aside note, and most people never think about Breakfast being all about The Break of the Fast during their sleep. I am especially glad that you appreciated the standards of cleanliness that Ann, Jill and their Co Workers continuously achieve every single Day..

This is where Trip advisor ratings can be a bit misleading. The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia is currently rated as the 3rd best HOTEL in the City of Edinburgh. In reality, it is a large suburban guesthouse or Bed & Breakfast.
It's high rating may be attributed, largely, to its owners who are extremely obliging and friendly. In addition, it is spotlessly clean and the cooked breakfasts are delicious and freshly prepared. My son and his girlfriend arrived down to breakfast at 9.45 am, having overslept. Breakfast is normally served until 9.30 am but there was never any reproach or reluctance to serve them.
The problem is that the rating of the Ceilidh-Donia as a top hotel gives the totally wrong impression of what you are getting for your money. The corridors are narrow and the bedrooms and double beds are small. It was quite a task carrying our two medium sized suitcases up 3 flights of steep stairs to our bedroom.
We were happy to be a 20 minute bus ride away from the city centre but this might prove irksome if you weren't expecting it.
All in all, we were satisfied but not ecstatic with our experience.

Dear Reviewer

You seem to misunderstand why Tripadvisor originally came into being, it only rates Guest opinions and experiences and in no way does it pretend to evaluate the qualities or the value for money of any Hotel, Restaurant etc., etc., that is for the Guest to check out from all other available sources before they book.
Tripadvisor certainly does not have its own preferred list for any of its categories, these list are what the public think and we in no way ever take for granted what review our Guest may leave on Tripadvisor.

I am baffled a wee bity when you suggest that our high rating is false, we run this Hotel on a Family Run Happy to Help basis (H2H) and genuinely nothing is too much trouble for us. We are not pretentious and are happy to be a 3 Star Metro style Hotel.

We only have 2 staircases and not 3, our corridors etc. are standard for a Town House Hotel as are the Bedrooms, all different shapes and sizes, and the beds are also British Standard sizes
Many Moons of thanks for your honest review but by stating that some Tripadvisor reviews can be very misleading and then saying in your review that The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia in reality is " A Suburban Guest House or a Bed and Breakfast " then unfortunately you are perpetuating your own Myth about Tripadvisor Reviews being misleading because we are in reality a Hotel.
You seem to question our position on Tripadvisor because you think we are not a Hotel, if you look again on Tripadvisor’s Edinburgh page you will see that the two above us a not fully functioning Hotels, one is actually Holiday Flats to let and the other one is an Apart Hotel.
As Hotelier’s and unlike Guest House Owners and Bed and Breakfast Owners we have all the relevant expensive Taxes and Compliance Certificates to prove we are indeed a Hotel, a Guest House or B n B can operate as a part time businesses and with less scrutiny.
The Hotel ceilidh-Donia is graded by The Scottish Tourist Board; Edinburgh Licensing Board issues us with a Certificate and The Police can inspect us at any time because we are a Licensed Premises and obviously a License to serve Alcohol.
The City of Edinburgh Council also Issue us with a Compliance Certificate, The Environmental Agency Inspects us and Issues us with a Certificate for our Food preparation areas, Fridges, Kitchen appliances and our other public places and last but Indeed not least the Tax and Vat man take their due share, oops I nearly forgot as we are a Hotel we do not qualify for the Scottish Governments relaxation of Business Rates to Small Businesses which is worth a lot of money.

Travellers appreciate other Traveller's reviews but I am sure that they do not in turn hang on other reviewers every word because all reviews are Subjective and are rarely Objective.

We as Hoteliers are here to welcome all our Guests or have a qualified Person on Duty from
7-00am until the Wee Small Hours 1-00 am, if our Guests choose to have a nightcap, we do not leave keys under plant pots or in security boxes at the front door.
We live on the Premises and are here during the night if someone or something causes an immediate problem or emergency.

Other features that you may not find in a Guest House or B n B are Guaranteed Wi-Fi, Free Computer and Printer for the ever Increasing Boarding Passes, Gardens to sit in, a Lounge for Guests to relax in, DVD Library, Free Bottled Water, Popcorn and Nuts in the Bar.

A local B&B which wasn't far off central Edinburgh, with a helpful staff. They assisted us in all matters from how to get off the bus, to providing us with a take away breakfast, when we had to catch our flight at 6 in the morning. The dog was adorable and the breakfast was tasteful. We would without a doubt return if our travels bring us back.
