“A bit out of town”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2013 via mobile

We stayed here on a recent visit to Edinburgh. The owners were fabulous and very helpful. The rooms are small, but very clean. The beds were the worst part of our whole stay. It was hard to sleep through the night because they were so uncomfortable and the pillows were old and smelled horrible. Dalkeith Road is a very quiet area. If you want to feel the energy of the city center I wouldn't recommend staying at the bed and breakfasts in this area.

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for your thoughtful comments, I see we hit the spot as far as hospitality and cleanliness were concerned but somehow you thought that our Beds were uncomfortable and our Pillows were smelly, I find that hard to believe as Anne and Jill run a tight ship as far as Beds and Linen are concerned, they have taken care over 14 years to evolve a system that incorporates new staff. During the summer months when we employ extra staff who are usually Students and are normally friends of friends or friends of family.

It would have been very helpful to us as the Owners of The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia if you had told us of your disappointments when you were staying with us as it is impossible to bolt the door after the Horse is gone, so to speak.

Beds are Beds and as always it is a very Subjective issue and not an Objective issue, our Beds have come from the same supplier for almost 25 years now and are of a high standard, in effect our Beds Mattresses and pillows are the same but unfortunately People are not and if you had told us of your sleeping problems and other issues then at least we may have been able sort everything out for you..

Booked fairly last minute for `The Fringe` and was delighted with the high standard of comfort.
Good situation -about 15 mins walk-for `Venue 33`-The Pleasance Courtyard- where there was plenty going on.
Large, beautifully clean bedroom with everything you might need, and delicious home cooked breakfast.
Good shower too!

Room Tip: On the ground floor you may be woken by people coming and going.

Many Moons of thanks for a terrific review, and yes we are a great Location during the World’s Largest Combined Arts, Comedy and Music Festivals, The Edinburgh Festivals. We are as you found out a 15 min walk to the Pleasance area and we are also just 20 mins walk away from the Udderbelly, Underbelly and the Gilded Balloon.

Thanks for your comments about our Rooms and Breakfasts..

All the amenities of a big chain hotel (en suite bathroom, hot breakfast, bar) AND the personal attention of a family run property! Such a perfect name for this hotel as it is the welcoming atmosphere and the feeling of a friendly gathering created by Annette and Maxx that really makes it special. Their sight seeing tips, restaurant recommendations and story telling at the end of the day made our week long stay memorable.

Some of the stand outs for us were:
terrific water pressure in the shower,
morning coffee on the deck,
cooked to order breakfast (be sure to give yourself time to relax and appreciate the cooking),
great location with available street parking making hassle free day trips,
and winding down at the end of a fun filled day with a drink in the bar (or getting take-out food which Annette helped us order).

Also, spend some time reviewing Maxx's map as it is packed with useful information.

Room Tip: Top floor, rear corner room was quiet with a garden view

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for a Sparkling review of the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia. Being a would be Poet, when Annette and I bought this old run down 1 Star Hotel we decided that a name change would be good.

So being a kinda wordsmith and having always loved the Eagles song The Hotel California I put Ceilidh and Donia together, Ceilidh is usually referred to as Scottish Dancing and Donia is always at the end of words such as Snowdonia in Wales ( Mountain) and Caledonia which is the Roman word for Scotland, so in my madness I thought that Ceilidh is really a Gathering of Friends to enjoy Dancing, Singing, Music, Food and the company of close Families and Donia must mean The Place Of, SSSOOOOOOOO I put them all together and came up with
Welcome to The Hotel Ceilidh-Donia, The Place for Friends to Gather..

So my dear revieweeee thanks for saying the words welcoming, friendly and gathering and that you thought the Name was perfect. As always Annette the Staff and I are here to make sure you enjoy Edinburgh and Scotland..

First off, this is a hotel not a guesthouse or B&B as some other reviewers said. It has 16 rooms, a full bar, daily maid service, etc. Perhaps what is confusing is that the owners Max and Annette are so very friendly and accommodating that you feel like you're having a B&B experience. For example, where else can you find a hotel that responds to every review individually? So for anyone wanting the amenities of a hotel with B&B atmosphere, this is the perfect place.

We ventured into Oldtown Ediburgh almost daily with no problem. The bus was easy to get to and super quick. What we liked about not being downtown was that it was quiet and we could easily find street parking for our rental car. The room itself was a good size and the bed was very comfortable.

What really makes this place is Max and Annette. Not only did they give us fantastic tips on attractions and restaurants (like buying Edinburgh Castle tickets ahead of time or walking to the Old Bell) but on multiple occasions just sat at the bar and tried a bunch of different whiskeys while chatting it up with Max. It was like our own personal Whiskey Experience without the ticket price!

Anyhow, I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed staying there.

Room Tip: My only advice is to keep in mind that this is a 3 star hotel so there isn't an elevator. So if...

Dear Revieweee

Many, Many Moons of Thanks for your Extra Sparkling Review, Extra ? yes because you have noticed ever so politely that we are Indeed a Hotel with all the Extra regulations and Taxes that we as a Hotel have to comply with but as you have also noticed we do reply personally to every review although because the Summer can be very busy sometimes we find it hard to reply as the reviews come on screen.

Delighted that you found our Location to your liking, and yes Indeed as you point out as do so many other Guests that people in Edinburgh have a brilliant Bus service and it has a app to upload so that you exactly where and where you can get to or go to..

Annette Myself and all our Staff chose to work in this Industry and yea sure we make a good living and who would not want to work in the Hospitality Business in Scotland and Edinburgh when per square mile the scenery, History and its people are hard to beat but you know what the best part is, it is that we meet so many, many Fun Peoples such as yourself from all over this Beautiful Wee Planet that most weeks it feels like it is we that are on Holiday..

I first heard of this place on TA and the reviews were spot on.....

We stayed here for 2 nights in a triple room the second week of July and found it a wonderful experience - right from when I got in touch with Annette for the booking - till we waved her and Kelly goodbye - it was a warm and friendly interaction.

It is a short distance from the city centre, quite convenient by bus as Edinburgh is a small city. We bought Plus Bus tickets while booking our train tickets, which made commuting very easy and comfortable. (There was a slight confusion in the beginning as the bus driver thought we wanted to go to the 'Caledonia' instead of 'Kelly-Donia' and directed us there instead!!)

We were met by Max as Annette was away that evening. At first we were daunted by the task of carrying our baggage to the second floor, but the sight of the lovely room made up for it. It was a largish triple room with plenty of space to move around and seating by the bay window too to enjoy the lovely view of the volcano!! The beds were luxurious and comfortable (and we could have easily overslept if we were not in a hurry to see Edinburgh!!) The bathroom was huge and very well designed.... (No dearth of warm and cold water in the shower too.)

The selection of hot chocolate (which our daughter loved) along with tea, coffee, and water bottles was a thoughtful touch, as was the presence of the hair dryer. We couldn't have asked for more.

All in all, the room was comfortable, clean and pleasing to the eye, with every detail having been looked into finely. Seeing Annette working in the garden that night confirmed how they have nurtured this little jewel with their love and care.

The breakfast prepared by Annette and her staff was our first introduction to Scottish food - and what a hit it was!! Not only was it sumptuous and delicious, but the wide selection ensured that everyone found what they liked! (If memory serves me right, they were even geared for gluten free, vegan and vegetarian diets.)
Max's bar is his pride - do spend some time here. He was very helpful when it came to local recommendations. For dinner, we can recommend The Salisbury Arms - a pub across the road that Max directed us to. We loved their platter and the pies. Unfortunately, they closed early the next night, so we had to settle for fish and chips and pizzas from a takeaway nearby!!

And finally, the beautiful Kelly who stole our hearts - someone in an earlier review had described her as 'the dog who can speak" and she does!! Since we were missing our retriever back at home, our daughter was more than happy to spend time playing with her at every opportunity!! (I think we have more pictures of Kelly than of the B&B itself!!)

Thanks Annette and Max for a truly wonderful stay...we will be back!

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for a Great review, well happy that one of our newly renovated Rooms hit the spot for you and your Family and yes Annette and the Staff do think about what our Guest may need in their Rooms, we try and upgrade 4 Rooms every year to keep on top of things, and yes climbing two floors is a wee bity hard but as with all Townhouse Hotels they were in fact built for Families to live in and so do not have Elevators for our Guests.

Wow and I thought a Great British Fry up for Breakfast Identified us to the World as being at the cutting edge of Cooking, Tee hee hee, glad your first experience of a Scottish breakfast was good, although the UK has Regional variations in Scotland we normally do not have Beans but will offer Haggis, Black Pudding, Tattie Scones and Mushrooms to go with The Great British Sausage Bacon and Eggs, yum, yum methinks I will go and Fry one up right now, yumy..

Our location has many, many Pubs and Restaurants within minutes walking distance such as Leslies Bar Pub Food, The Bell Inn, Pub Food and A la carte and of course this Ladies favourite The Salisbury Arms also Pub Grub and A la carte..
Lastly, sorry to say but our Golden Retriever is actually called Keilidh ( Kaylee) and is named after our Hotel, The Ceilidh-Donia which roughly translated means
A Place for Friends to Gather for Food, Singing, Music, Dancing and a great Family get together..

We spent three nights here after being away on Mull and met up with my parents who also stayed here.

The location is really good, being just out of the city centre so that it is quiet but only a short bus journey into Princess Street, or about a 30 minute walk. There are some good pubs nearby so you don't have to go into the town centre if you want a quick meal or drink.

Annette and Max (the owners) are very nice people and really helpful.

On arrival we were met by Annette who made us feel really welcome and showed us to our lovely room. We had booked a double but had been moved to a triple room for no additional cost. This was a very spacious room with a fantastic bathroom. The room was very clean and comfortable and tastefully decorated. Absolutely nothing to fault about the room or bathroom. The shower was great, which makes a nice change! It was also a nice touch to get a bottle of water each day, especially as it was so hot in Scotland whilst we were there. The bed was very comfy and the room very quite. My parents had a double and although it was smaller than our triple (unsurprisingly) it was a good size and had the same quality and cleanliness as our room.

The breakfast was really good. A good selection and all freshly cooked to order. The bar and breakfast area are really comfortable and look really nice. It was a pleasurable experience spending time in these areas.

Annette was really helpful throughout our stay offering advice on places to go in Edinburgh and the best buses to get.

Annette and Max really make you feel welcome in their lovely hotel. There really isn't anything to fault about this hotel. We will definitely stay here the next time we go to Edinburgh. It will certainly be our first choice.

Very highly recommended.

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for a terrific review

And yes Indeedy Annette is only too willing to give as much attention, Information and time to each Guest on arrival and during their stay, we never forget what we are like when we go on Holiday, everything is new and getting you bearings etc. is sometimes very daunting, that is why we give out our own Map so that Our Guests have a feel for the area in the way that we see it..

Glad that you liked our rooms, as you have noticed The Power Showers all have Pumps in them and give a great Shower but sometimes other Guests may hear them but hey everybody's on their Hols, Yes ! Know? And I know that when I go on Holiday if there is no great drenching in the Shower Cubicle I am not a happy camper, it’s like eating wet Lettuce.

We feel that the Breakfast Room, Lounge and Bar are great places for Guests to mingle and exchange their Holiday experiences and yes a Wee Dram or two of my Finest malt Whiskies does sometimes induce a wee smile or two..

Found ourselves in Scotland with no accommodation booking and foolish of us, didn't realise The Open Golf was on. Call the Ceilidh-Donia on the off chance of a last minute availability and luckily enough we snatched up the last room for a good rate. Max (owner) was awesome and very very friendly, room was average size for European Rooms and bathroom was great. Breakfast was home cooked and delicious and the whole stay was charming, not one complaint.

Dear Reviewer

Thanks for you thoughtful review, you did well getting a room when The Open Golf was on in Edinburgh and thanks for mentioning that our Breakfast were to your liking and were delicious.
All Townhouse Hotels and Indeed Guest Houses/BnBs have all different sizes and shapes to their Rooms and of course will never ever match the purpose built mass produced Rooms that the International players offer to the traveller but you can be assured that you won’t find two rooms the same as each other in the part of this great Hospitality Business that we all work in, In Bonnie Scotland..
