Hotel Ceilidh-Donia
Ranked #5 of 151 Hotels in Edinburgh
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 June 2014

A hotel within walking distance to both Holyrood Park with Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle which provides all you need for a reasonably fair price if you don't want to spend a lot of time at the hotel. Remember to ask for strong coffee though, or add instant coffee which is provided for free.

Plus:
- Flexible and service minded hosts.

Minus:
- There is no parking place, but not too hard to find one on the street.
- Although there is free WiFi, you may need to consider another hotel if a fast Internet connection is important.
- Our sink was small, and it's hard to get hot water because of the tap design.

Dear Reviewee

Thanks for the compliments and yes our Location is superb as we are just 10 mins by Bus to Town and a few mins walk to Arthur Seat.
Coffee is such a personal thing that over 30 years in this Business we found that like Salt and Sugar it is easier to add than subtract form Food or Coffee, we do when asked provide a Caff tier and Guests can have Coffee or Tea as strong as they like.
We advertise on our Website and on our Pre-arrival e-mails that we have two parking spaces on a first come served basis but in all the years here at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia I have never ever failed to get parking for our Guests Cars within 150 yards of the Hotel.
We have for 15 years here at the Hotel Ceilidh-Donia provided FREE Internet access and we have always provided FREE Laptops and printers for our Guests but todays I Pads, I Phones etc etc demand more G-bytes than most Hotels can provide if all Guests want to Download at the same time but we guarantee Wi-Fi in our Bar/Lounge and with the Two FREE Laptops/FREE Paper for Printing your Boarding Passes in the Bar what’s not to like.

The Bathrooms/Sinks/Showers all meet with the Scottish Tourist Board standards and you may be the first person to alert us to this issue, this Hotel is a Georgian Townhouse and space can be problematic but we do meet all STB grading with all our Rooms and Shower Suites, honest.

In this day and age of instant access to the Internet with Google Maps and Tripadvisor it is still a mystery when people are traveling and staying a few days in different Hotels/Guests Houses find such trivial things to be annoying, when in Rome do as the Roman’s do Methinks..

This is a comfortable, intimate hotel within easy reach of the city centre and not far from the bus stop.It is quiet and set well back from any busy roads. The room was clean and tidy and the breakfast was up to a good standard. They have a nice cosy bar as well.

The star of the hotel is the owners dog whose party piece is removing the owners spectacles.

An enjoyable stay and it would have been nice if it had been longer.

Dear Reviewee

Thanks for a lovely review of our Wee Edinburgh Hotel, and yes you are right Keilidh is the Star of the Hotel, she had five puppies with our first Golden Retriever called Keltic who is sadly in the Sky Kennel along with a little Puppy who just managed to get 11 months, he died last year and he is so sadly missed..

My wife and I stayed here for 6 nights after our wedding in Edinburgh. We had 3 other couples staying with us. Maxx and Annette were both friendly and accommodating - an absolute joy! The rooms were perfect size, with wi-fi, hot pot for coffee, and television. The rooms were clean, and the staff did a great job of keeping everything clean. The breakfast was excellent. The hotel has a small bar, which is perfect for a nightcap after a long day of sightseeing. Also, Kaylee - the hotel dog - is a doll! The only downside to the hotel is that it is a bit of a walk to the Royal Mile and old town sights - only a couple minute cab ride. That was the only issue with this amazing little hotel. Thank you, Maxx and Annette, for making our dream wedding that much more!

We stayed two nights when we first arrived in Edinburgh. Maxx and Annette are great hosts. The rooms were lovely and clean. Our room was on the second floor facing the street and even with the window open throughout the night the street was very quiet. The breakfast was generous and very good.

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for a Great Review, short and sweet but very complete.. Sometimes Guests arrive and because we have no Lift/Elevator the second floor seems like an effort but at least you get a great view of Arthurs Seat or of a typical Scottish shared area at the Back with all the lovely gardens to look at..

We stayed in room 18 on the ground floor. The room was quite large and very clean. Ensuite had just been refitted and had a very good shower . The breakfast menu was vast with cereals and pastys, yoghurts and various cooked options including a full english with black pudding and haggis and poached eggs on toast. They have a good selection of teas too.whilst we were staying the world cup football was on and my hubby purchased some bottled lager from the bar to have in the room as the match started at 11pm! And the proprietor gave him an ice bucket and ice to keep his beer cold.
Which was a lovely gesture. They also have dvds which you can loan with a refundable deposit and various guide books to help plan your stay in edinburgh. All the staff and owners are polite and helpful and I hope we get to return to this wonderful city, so we can stay here again.

Room Tip: If your disabled or have mobility issues then room 18 is just as you enter the building and there is...

I recently stayed at this hotel with my daughter for 3 nights. All the staff are welcoming , very friendly and helpful. We had delicious breakfasts and our room was spotlessly clean. we also went for afternoon tea at Prestonfields House which was fabulous and had a wonderful club sandwich in the Dome on George Street. The hotel is just around the corner from the main road with buses runnning about every 10 minutes into the centre of Edinburgh.
We wouldn`t hesitate in recommending this lovely hotel and we will certainly stay there again.

This has been one of my favourite hotels to stay in. It's a charming hotel in Edinburgh and the staff make you feel right at home and will go above and beyond to help you. The hotel is about a 10 minute bus ride from the city centre however buses come quite often so I didn't find that a bother at all. There are also some good pubs and restaurants within walking distance if you don't want to go in to the city centre at night.
The breakfast is fantastic with a full continental and also a hot breakfast that is cooked to order from their menu. The produce is of a high quality amd the food delicious! The wait staff at breakfast are very helpful and friendly. The bedroom quality is of a high standard as is the bathroom. Everything was neat and very clean and the beds were comfortable.
Another bonus is the owners lovely Golden retriever that hangs around the hotel!
I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and would stay again if I came back to Edinburgh.

Dear Revieweee

Many Moons of thanks for a Sparkling Review, yes we are just 10 mins by Bus from the City Center but in a quiet residential neighbourhood and just mins from the glorious Arthur Seat and its three Lochs, Palace, Parliament hey and a Castle at the top of the next hill on the royal Mile, even Walt Disney could not create that..

We have a great selection of local Pubs with Food and a app a dozen different choices of International cuisine just mins away if you do not want to back into the City every night..

Thanks for mentioning our Fluff Ball Keilidh, she is certainly a plus with our Guests, but hey she knows what time of day is and the best places to lie down to maximise folk’s attention.. We still miss our Old Boy Keltic (15 yrs old) and Puppy Ruaridh (11months) all Golden Retrievers, hey that gives me an Idea! We could change the name of the Hotel to Retrievers Retreat, ha ha just jokin..
