“Brilliant place with great ambiance!”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 via mobile

The staff were really accommodating to what kind of food we wanted and I'm surprised I'm giving it five stars because I don't really like going out for Indian food (I have a fair share of Indian food at home). Awesome ambiance and very spacious.

“Very disappointed”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

Several of us went for an early dinner during the festival. No menu appears on the website but having read older reviews it seems that the thali cost £5 in March, now it cost £10 and was not worth it. Two miniscule curries (I didn't know tinned kidney beans and tinned sweetcorn were a staple indian dish), literally a smear of raita, a crispy chapati thing which should have been soft, spoonful of rice and dish of mildly curried brown water we were told was dahl. They must have run out of lentils (in a vegetarian indian?) because there were certainly none in there. We also had some 'bigger' snacky things, 4 small samosas, 4 very small chickpea ball things (the best dish of all) and three round slices of something that looked like black pudding and to me tasted horrible, these three dishes were £6 each. Overall it was relatively inexpensive but you got what you paid for.

Dear Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us with valuable feedback. This is greatly appreciated, especially as on this occasion your experience did not meet your expectations. Please accept our sincere apologies for this. The vast majority of feedback we receive from our customers is overwhelmingly positive therefore it is of great concern to us that your experience was unsatisfactory.

You visited us during a transitionary period at which time a number of new members of staff were being trained. We endeavour to provide our customers with a superior and thoroughly enjoyable dining experience. To not have delivered this in your case, saddens us greatly.

We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from critics and customers on the quality of our food and our portion sizes. As I am sure you can appreciate, what we are able to provide in a Thali at a cost of £10 is not unlimited given the low price of the meal itself and the overheads which we as a relatively new, small business must bare. Furthermore, as the average price of a Thali in Edinburgh is in excess of £12, we believe that what we offer is extremely competitive. We work tirelessly to cater to the needs of all customers and therefore we encourage diners to make their tastes and preferences known to our staff to enable us to recommend the most suitable dishes.

As you mentioned you were unable to find the menu on our website, please see the following link for our festival menu: http://www.bindiedinburgh.com/menu.

We hope you will visit once again in the future so that we are able to redeem your impressions of our establishment.

Many thanks once again for your feedback.

“Good Food Let Down by the Terrible Service”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

I attended this little place on a Saturday. We decided to get out the centre a little bit in order to find a restaurant that was less busy during the fringe period. This restaurant had one table of 8 seated and that was is it.

We were seated quickly enough although there was an awkward period where no one noticed the four of us standing in the doorway.

It's a very well decorated restaurant with a pleasant atmosphere. It is very small and one would imagine would become very claustrophobic during busy periods.

The menu is a tapas style. We all very quickly decided that we would like the Thali - a combination of things picked by the chef but were later told they weren't doing any as it would take a 15-30 minute wait. We decided to opt for 8 dishes between the 4 of us.

It became quickly clear that more attention was being paid to the 8 seated people behind us. Their food was coming out thick and fast whereas we still hadn't received our first.

Although we had 8 dishes, they were 4 dishes doubled up. We received four in okay time but the last four took 20 minutes to arrive. It was the chilli paneer which we had hoped to have accompanied with the rice. However, the rice came twenty minutes after that. During this time, the 8 seater table behind us continued to receive their food in a timely manner. We were told the rice would be shortly on its way, however, could hear snippets from the kitchen about how to make it faster... it was clear that they had not started. Once the rice did finally arrive, the paneer was cold. This was very disappointing.

There were two people waiting on tables. One of which did very little and one that tried a lot but answered to the one that did very little. Collectively, they were not very efficient.

The food itself was nice. We had the onion bajjis, south african potato chips, chilli paneer and vegetable rice. However, the chilli paneer had more pepper and about 5 bits of paneer which was disappointing.

Overall, the restaurant's time management and waiting ability was atrocious and I don't think I can face coming back to be served tapas 30 minutes a part. The point of tapas is to have lots of mini dishes that you can then eat on together. It added to the awkwardness of the whole meal, that we had ordered two dishes individually and found that some of us had not eaten anything an hour in to the meal as we waited for the paneer and rice to come out.

I would avoid this place if you are looking to retain any sort of patience by the time you leave.

“Brilliant little place, veggie and vegan friendly. Great food ”
Reviewed 7 August 2014 via mobile

Came here with two friends, one of us is vegan and the other two of us eat almost anything... All of us were well catered for.

We had the thali - we were advised to order a few of the other things on the menu too and I'm so glad we did!

The thali itself was good, a nice range of different dishes with rice and chapati. However the real treat was the fusion dishes - chilli paneer which was just knockout good, and the little puffed poori with a minty tamarind water which seems odd, but is amazing.

When I come back I'll just order the tapas style stuff because it's the star of the show and like nothing you'll have eaten before.

We had a lovely evening, the staff were helpful and well informed and even gave us some useful festival advice!

Thanks so much - just magic.
