Anyone who knows Brasilian food will love this restaurant, a real taste of Brasil. The menu is very varied and has something for everyone. We ate the best feijoada (beans, meats, rice and fried cassava) we have had in England, and anyone who has visited Brasil as we have, will love the food plus the lively atmosphere, food and the efficient and helpful staff. They do a pre-theatre meal and 2 course lunches at good prices. We would recommend Boteco do Brasil to anyone wanting somewhere for either a quick snack or more laid-back meal, and of course a few caipirinhas to add to the fun. Cost about £20 each for main meal, dessert, coffee.

We arrived at about 8.30pm on a Saturday night during the Fringe Festival with no booking and they were really helpful. Despite being rushed off their feet and waiting for 20 - 30 minutes the staff did all they could to get us seated. It was packed and a great atmosphere - without looking outside you could imagine you were in Brazil! Great music and the huge food selection. Very tasty and reasonable. We had three courses and every tasted amazing! Combined with the friendly staff and samba music, this is definitely my favourite place in Edinburgh!

i visited this restaurant with a group of friends. we were shown to a table but after waiting for any kind of menu, food or drink, we eventually had to ask. it was very difficult to get the attention of the server. there were two people in the group, including myself, who had special dietary requirements and the waitress offered to speak to the chef to see what was on offer but didn't get back to us. we had specified this when booking and the waitress seemed aware. after a lengthy wait,i decided to order off the menu and take my chances - as it was, we'd waited nearly half an hour for our drinks. we complained to one server about the service but she looked just as fed up as us!
another in our group ordered a veggie burger. her food wasn't served until well after the rest of the table had received theirs. when it did come it wasn't a veggie burger so much as vegetables on a roll! water was also ordered with our meal and we watched as it sat on the bar for another half hour before it was brought to the table.
at this point, the manageress rather rudely asked us if we realised that our table was reserved for a party at 7.30pm...we couldn't believe her nerve! another of our party began to explain about the fact that we had been kept waiting for meals and drinks but she abruptly turned and walked away!
the staff were all apologetic and seemed quite embarrassed and we asked for the manager - a man came over, apologised and offered us a round of drinks. at this point we also realised we had been overcharged on our bill!
we definitely will NOT be going back to Boteco Do Brasil, we left in various states of annoyance and hunger.

Our family visited at the start of the Edinburgh Festival for a birthday. Here are the pros and cons:

+ Delicious cocktails/mocktails
+ Friendly waiting staff
+ Cool ambiance
+ Food beautifully presented
+ Food flavours excellent
+Tremendous location

- Service too slow
- Food quality, especially meat, seriously substandard

The big issue is with the quality control of the main courses. We had a round of excellent cocktails/mocktails and some tasty tapas as starters (the beef with cassava was particularly excellent). Main courses were a huge disappointment. We had the Brazilian stew, which was all beans and no meat - it is advertised as with beef rib yet we found not one piece. Flavours excellent, quality poor. The steaks we had were abysmal. All fat and gristle, ordered medium yet came out near blue in places.

We complained to the lovely waitress, who brought the manager. He was very apologetic, and we asked that, rather than give us money off, he made sure they improved as their prime Festival location meant they will should be doing better. We also want to go back and actually enjoy our meal. In the end he did remove some items from the bill, which was a kind touch.

I want this place to do well. The menu is interesting, the atmosphere is cool and the location is terrific. They need to up their game in the kitchen though, perhaps it's a matter of improving their meat supplier, perhaps it's about improving the chefs' quality control process.

Give it a go, hopefully it will improve when you go.
