Four of us visited Edinburgh to watch the Scotland v England 6 nations match. We chose this place given its proximity to Murrayfield. We rapidly realised that we had made a poor choice. The guest house is distinctly grubby with very outdated and shabby decoration and thread bare carpets in places. the rooms are large but the duvet covers leave a great deal to be desired. The bathrooms are ridiculously small and dirty, the towels have seen better days, grey thin and some even have holes in them! Our friends even had a visitor, the local mouse and had to move rooms in the middle of our first night.
The food was terrible the bacon tasted off, cardboard sausages, bullet eggs and NO Brown bread(you would have thought that I had requested something unusual).
The male member of staff was friendly enough and welcoming however his female partner was decidedly frosty and unwelcoming; not sure why they are in this business.
I would avoid this place it is horrible in more way's than one.

Room Tip: I doubt there is one given how grubby it is. Don't stay there.

Very friendly, personal service. The room was very clean and thoughtfully appointed (although quite outdated). The breakfast was at best, abysmal. There is a limited and unappetising selection of cereals/muesli, yogurts and juices. The hot breakfast which is ordered is truly, truly unappetising. Anonymous sausages of 90% filler, bacon which seemed to have been boiled and poached eggs accompanied by half a glass of tepid water on your plate were a few of the culprits. It was all unfortunately revolting. I saw unfortunately because the rest of the stay was fine. One last pointer, a very early call is placed to all rooms confirming whether or not you'll be down for breakfast which ids irritating if you're planning on a sleep in. Otherwise it is located conveniently by haymarket train station (NOT the main Edinburgh station) and about a 15 minute walk into town.

Room Tip: Strangely our room's toilet was located outside of our bedroom which was not convenient for a frequent night pee-er like me.

This is a very friendly hotel, well situated for town, with good breakfasts and friendly, helpful staff. I would happily stay here again. The room was very spacious, with plenty of tea & coffee. The fact that there is an additional toilet just outside the room is extremely useful.

Room Tip: We had a family room on the top floor, which was spacious and comfortable, and very quiet. You do need to be fairly fit though. Two flights of stairs and no lift.

If we had paid the normal tariff for our room it is unlikely we would have been so critical. However, having needed to stay in the vicinity of the Haymarket Station for the New Year period we found that all hotels were charging premium tariffs for the privilege of being in Edinburgh for Hogmanay. St Valery was no exception and were asking £130 per night. What we got for this was disappointing. The positives for us was that it was in the exact location we required, the room was large and clean and the staff friendly. Overall the hotel was dated and although our room was clean and appeared to have been recently decorated it lacked style. The shower room was not only extremely small but it was extremely dated, tired and unclean. The shower had obviously not been cleaned properly as there was dried on shower gel of a different colour to the one in the dispenser! The floor around the toilet had not been cleaned and overall it would have been a disappointment at the normal tariff but to have paid so much for such a tiny tatty ensuite was upsetting. The breakfast was also disappointing, having read a review criticising the eggs we thought it would be difficult to get them wrong, but we were wrong. On the first morning the poached egg was inedible because it wasn't cooked enough and on the second and third mornings the fried eggs were overcooked with hard yolks and whites that were like brown lace and so tough they were inedible. The tomatoes also tasted odd, we suspect that they had been frozen at some stage. On our last evening we decided to have a cup of tea in our room but were unable to use the cups as they were stained and we felt they had probably only been briefly rinsed out and not properly dried. Having paid well over double the normal tariff we would have hoped that there was some concession to serving breakfast later on New Year's Day, however, it was still served during the normal time of 7.30 to 9.00. Sadly we would not go back to this hotel, even paying the normal tariff.

I randomly selected St Valery on the internet a couple of days before I traveled. I was not disappointed. It's a very nice place, very friendly and helpful owners. my room was comfortable and clean. My room was at the rear of the hotel and it was very quiet, but I think the front of the house would be quiet as well as St Valery is on a side street.
