My partner and I stayed for 3 nights, Harry was very welcoming and the breakfast was good. The room was clean and warm and the bed was comfortable. The location of the hotel is brilliant with the main tourist attractions all a short walk away.
It was rather noisy on the evening but this is two be expected when staying in the centre of any major city. There are 2 flights of stairs to climb but this is explained on the website.
Overall a lovely guesthouse well worth the money.

We love this place, just min walk from bus station and 5 mins to the theatre. The rooms is basic but really what else do you need and I'm quite sure if it's not in the room the owners will sort something out, it's clean, the owners are a dream team but the icing on the cake has to be the breakfast. Would recommend this place to anyone.

we stayed for a single night in this well positioned, clean, friendly establishment,, we found the room to be very clean and comfortable and the service provided by the owners to be first class, the breakfast was wholesome and well cooked and served with efficiency and friendliness. when we come back to Edinburgh the elder York will be out first option ,thank you for making our stay so nice.
the only drawback would be for people who are disabled or less mobile due to the amount of stairs you need to climb upon entering the front door.

Stayed for two nights here 13/10/13
Arrived around 930ish after just a short walk from the train station.
There are stairs to get up to the reception/ accommodation and found these no problem to get up even with a torn calf muscle ouch! (from running in a 10k trail race earlier in the day)
On arriving was greeted by the owner Harry-superbly friendly and welcoming.
Our double room we had was clean as was the en-suite- the welcome tray was well stocked with teas/coffee ect . with fresh clean towels on the rail
the bed was firm but comfortable and the room the heating on making the room warm and pleasant (my partner over packed the night wear, thinking Scottish Guest Houses would be cold at night, though she's used to camping in a tent lol )
the breakfasts were great plenty of tea & coffee on offer with cereals and fresh fruits and a very nice full Scottish breakfast.
We enjoyed our short trip and this was a truly great place to stay.
The only down side to it was that we had to go home :-(
Elder York is some where we will stay again when in Edinburgh

Room Tip: stayed in room 4 Its on the same level as the breakfast room
