“Terrific service and comfort”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Our family recently spent 5 nights at the Nira Caledonia - one room for our children and suite for ourselves. The location is wonderful- walking distance to all the major sights and very close to the best shopping yet in a more residential area close to cute farmers' market, the water of Leith pathway for running or strolling and the National Museum of Modern Art I and II.

The front desk couldn't have done more for us- everything from arranging taxis, to recommending restaurants, etc. The breakfast was wonderful and the star was very eager to help. The rooms were luxuriously comfortable although I must say we could hear our neighbors clearly through the walls. We had a glitch trying to figure out the bathtub (too many nozzles for us!) and they offered us a bottle of wonderful New Zealand sauvignon blanc to compensate.

The hotel is small and cozy so you are certainly not just a number. They remembered our preferences for still or sparking water and which tea we liked in the morning. The Scottish breakfast buffet and hot breakfast choices were excellent- we usually didn't need any lunch afterwards.

Our kids had room service meals several evenings and were very happy with them. I would definitely stay again.

We recently stayed at the Nira Caledonia on our trip to Scotland. What a wonderful experience - both Edinburgh and the hotel. We cannot say enough about it but here are some comments.

First, and foremost, was the staff. They were absolutely incredible. The General Manager, Rory, has put together amazingly nice and helpful people. They went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. Some examples are restaurant recommendations (each one was excellent), a guide (Paul) to take us outside of Edinburgh who turned out to be one of the best guides we have ever had, and then a lesson on tasting Whiskey (called Scotch in the U.S.) from the bartender in the intimate bar.

The location is in a quiet, residential area. However, we walked everywhere - to the main tourist sites, shopping and to the area of Stockbridge where we ate dinner twice. Because of the location, we could do everything we wanted without taking a cab even once.

The room we had was very comfortable and great amenities. Our friends had a room that was completely different than our room but was equally comfortable and with great amenities.

Finally, the food was also very good. The breakfast, particularly the smoked salmon, was first rate. We ate dinner at the hotel one evening. The dinner was excellent.

We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Our friend's room was not in the main part of the hotel and they had a nice deck in a little gar...

This was our first stay at Nira Caledonia and we cannot fault any part of the experience.

We were treated with care and attention from the moment we arrived in the beautiful and elegant reception area. The friendly check in was completed in minutes and with no fuss. We were shown to our suite which was stunning. It was spotlessly clean and immaculately presented with a huge jacuzzi just as we had booked. After checking the place from top to bottom (as you do) we were very impressed with the level of care and attention that had clearly gone into the presentation of the suite. We even got a quick call from reception to ensure we were happy with everything (nice touch)

We booked the jacuzzi suite as it was a special occasion. They had obviously taken note of this and within 10 mins we had a knock at the door and a complimentary glass of bubbles with some canapes had been sent courtesy of the general manager Rory which was a lovely gesture.

Dinner was excellent with the steak and lamb cutlets from the amazing josper grill being the highlight. Cocktails were great and the service was brilliant. Moray looked after us very well and was informative, charming and attentive without being intrusive. The restaurant has a beautiful ambience and we really enjoyed the whole experience. On return to our suite we found the turn down service had put rose petals on our bed and had left and miniature Nira Caledonia whiskey for a night cap. This really is attention to detail which we have rarely seen elsewhere even in some other big name 5 star establishments. We have stayed in many similar style of hotels but we think the service here is the best we have experienced and we will definitely be going back soon.

If you are looking for somewhere for a relaxed stay or a special occasion I would not hesitate to trust the team at Nira Caledonia as you will be looked after very well. They are only too happy to help with whatever you need and really went out of their way to ensure we enjoyed our stay.

Many thanks to Rory, Moray and the rest of the amazing team for making our stay a great one!

We've just returned to USA after our first trip to the UK. Our three day stay at the Nira Caledonia made our visit to Edinburgh. Some things that set this boutique hotel apart from others is their management's and staff's attention to detail, and the warm, friendly, helpful atmosphere.

Upon entering our room, it was clear to see management and staff took pride in their establishment. Our standard sized room was beautifully decorated with high quality furnishings and the huge bed was covered in luxurious bedding. The bathroom, although small, was exceptionally clean, and provided the luxury of six shower heads/jets.

In addition to the in-room coffee and tea selection, guests are provided with Scottish tea cakes which turned out to be a soft marshmallow on a biscuit base fully coated in real milk chocolate. When I realized and shared with the staff these were the Scottish treats my grandmother spoke about her grandparents serving during her youth, they kindly provided more. After I discovered the teacakes and my husband the caramel logs, we quickly passed on Scottish shortbread during our time in Scotland and London and looked for these Tunnock delights.

Dining at the Nira Caledonia is just as impressive as the accommodations. Meals are offered in a well appointed dining room. Breakfast options include a full Scottish breakfast, as well as breakfast to order. Additionally, you can partake in the fine dining version of a continental breakfast. Everything from the fresh pastries, jams, fruits, cheeses, meats and smoked salmon we tasted were excellent. Although, previous commitments prevented us from having dinner at the hotel during our stay, their impressive menu made it clear evening dining would be exceptional as well.

The, highly rated, Nira Caledonia is conveniently located. It's only a short walk to numerous shops, pubs, tour buses and restaurants. We spent our entire visit on foot and used the Hop On Hop Off to visit the sites.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the standard room because we mainly used it for sleeping and grooming. If you're spen...

Myself and my partner have just come back from an amazing trip to Edinburgh for my birthday, where we stayed at the beautiful Nira Caledonia.

The hotel staff were attentive and friendly and were more than happy to help, even offering to print off menus for restaurants we had booked.

We were skeptical about our room as it was the first time we had booked through otel.com.

There have been some bad reviews about the rooms at the top of the hotel so my heart sank as we climbed and climbed up all the stairs to be shown to ours.

However it's proof not to believe everything you hear, the room was amazing. The gentleman told us it had been newly refurbished which you could tell, it was beautifully decorated and very spacious.

The breakfast had a wonderful selection of continental and cooked and was extremely tasty.

All in all, this hotel made my weekend and I look forward to returning in the future

Drivning in pouring rain towards Edinbourgh, with no pre-booked room. Hmmmm ... Our guide book recommended Nira Caledonia, and already whilst booking on the phone, we got the impression that this was something special. Staff was friendly and flexible in finding space for us - a family of five. The hotel is situated in a cozy neighbourhood in walking distance from the centre. And we got the most amazing suite with direct acces to the lovely garden. Although Nira Caledonia is not a family hotel in particular we all felt very welcome, both in the reception and in the restaurant, and we would recommend the place anytime.

Visited the Nira on the first few nights of our honeymoon road trip. And what a start!

Beautiful big room, huge bed, furnished with high quality furnishings and luxurious bedding. We had a jacuzzi suite, which was a lovely treat after walking our feet around the city all day. Could even see the massive tv from it! We had a private garden space to the rear and it was lovely to make use of this in the mornings and to star gaze in evening.
Staff are more than helpful, are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast is the fine dining version of continental with a cooked breakfast to follow, all very tasty and satisfying.

Located in the new town Stockbridge area, it was only a short walk over cobbled stones to numerous shops, pubs and restaurants, then only a little further to Princess Street and the castle.

We had a fantastic time in Edinburgh, and thank the Nira for their hospitality and a great start to our honeymoon.
