We stayed here for 4 nights and wished we could stay for longer. all arrangements at straven were well thought and carefully done. whenever you think we need to know something you will find note about the same. What stands out for us, is the friendly and helpful welcome that each guest receives from Mac and Marian. i would highly recommend this b&b and will go back there again whenever i need accomodation in edinburgh

Out of our 3 weeks in Ireland, Scotland and England, this was one of our favorite experiences. Mac his wife met us with such humor and friendliness and made us feel so at home. They really went out of their way to help us when we had a little logistical 'emergency' with our laundry that could have been disastrous for our trip. Kind and friendly and yet professional! I would highly recommend this facility!

stayed at straven for a night in august as part of our tour round Scotland and really enjoyed our time there. although we didn't met marion, mac was the perfect host and nothing was too much trouble for him

the first thing he did when we arrived was to help get the bike off the road and under the shelter they have round the side of the house, which was a really nice touch. even though the place was full, we never felt rushed or pressured at any point.

breakfast in the morning was great, with lots to choose from and the rooms were good too.

thanks again, hopefully see you again next year.

We stayed at the Straven again in August 2013, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit, just as before, in May. Other reviewers have mentioned things like proximity of bus services, the promenade, the beach, peacefulness of the neighbourhood, etc., and these are all accurate and appropriate comments..

What stands out for us, is the friendly and helpful welcome that each guest receives from Mac and Marian. The accommodation is beautifully maintained, and does feel like home from home. We are great fans of cooked breakfasts when we are away, and the Straven really does not disappoint. They are cooked to perfection.

When we next visit Edinburgh, we shall seek to put the Straven at the top our accommodation list.

This guest house is a beautiful home away from home. Mac and Marian are lovely hosts and made our stay worthwhile. From a warm welcome to hearty breakfasts and a vast room with sea-view our stay felt like a true holiday.
We chose Straven to avoid parking hassle in the city, but we didn't expect Portobello to be a functioning community with a shopping centre, a swimming pool, and the beach. Going into the city was marvellous (we love Edinburgh), but we found taking walks in Portobello equally relaxing.
Great for the soul. We'll definitely be back!

For decades my wife and I have visited Edinburgh en route between the Hebrides and Hertfordshire. We used to favour city centre B&Bs but, as parking has become more difficult in recent years, we have looked further afield. Joppa is ideal. Straven Guest House could not be bettered. It is in a quiet and wide cul-de-sac that leads straight to the beach a few yards away. a few yards up the road one can catch a frequent bus into the City centre. The house is beautifully maintained with large comfortable rooms and Marian & Mac's breakfasts are to die for. This was our fourth visit and we will be back next yhear for certain.

Mac and Marion really do have the personal touch. They are very friendly and always happy to help with any information you may need. The beds are comfy and rooms very clean. Best of all is the amazing breakfast- beats most bnbs in the quality of cooking and choice available- WOW! The location of Straven is interesting as it is very close to the beach- we had a great view out of our window and fell asleep to the sound of the water lapping each night.

Room Tip: The no 26 bus goes into Edinburgh city centre every 15 mins and takes 20 minutes.
