“Excellent B&B - Highly Recommended!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2014

My boyfriend and I stayed at Straven Guest house for Hogmanay - we had such a lovely time. Not only were the rooms of the highest standard, the hosts (Mac&Marian) were so welcoming, helpful and made our stay extremely pleasant. One of the highlights for us was the breakfast, there is a wide variety of options, however, we had a fully cooked breakfast most mornings which was delicious (a special added touch was that it was served until 11am on New Years Day!). Straven is a short bus ride to the City Centre, it is also so close to the beach which is a bonus. We could not recommend this guest house enough - we will be back!

I really enjoyed my 3 night stay at Straven Guest House. The room was very comfortable, with a nice roomy shower. The bus link to central Edinburgh is really straightforward. The number 26 runs to Princes St every 10 minutes or so, and takes around 20 mins. So it's really not a problem not to be in central Edinburgh and actually I found that the location in Joppa added to the experience, because you're right by the beach. You can have nice seaside walks in winter and in summer you can combine city sightseeing with sunbathing. There aren't many places where you can do that! Mac and Marian are very friendly and will give lots of helpful recommendations for getting around, sightseeing and places to eat. But the best thing of all about this place is the superb Scottish breakfast. I started with porridge and then had bacon and egg, which really set me up for the day.

Straven Guest House offers a delightful alternative to the sterile busyness of a hotel when you wish to be in the Edinburgh area. Located in Portobello, it is just a short walk from the sands of Firth of Forth AND a bus stop that will have you in the heart of the city in under fifteen minutes. The rooms are spacious, clean, and attractively decorated with artifacts that Mac & Marion have accumulated over their 18 years as B & B hosts. They are gracious, attentive, have a wealth of information about the area they are willing to share, and are fun! They obviously still enjoy hosting - and are very good at it. The breakfasts choices are varied and delicious. Mac makes his own yogurt and it is the BEST! This is a spot I can unequivocally recommend!

Whilst visiting UK from Australia I did not want to stay at B&B's as I thought it would be like staying in a strangers home. My hubby booked Straven Guest House without my knowing and I must say it was one of the best places we stayed at in our seven week trip. Mac and Marian were wonderful hosts, the room was lovely with great views of the ocean, spotlessly clean, very quiet area, tea & coffee making facilities in our room was a plus and breakfast was wholesome & delicious. I really felt at home there. It was great to be able to leave our rental car parked at the B&B and travel into Edinburgh by bus (which was just at the top of the street). The restaurants near by were very good and we felt safe walking around the area.
We are planning to return to the UK in the near future and would love to stay at Straven again. We highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Upstairs room with ocean views.

This was our 3rd visit to Straven over the past 7 years. Despite Mac's "cheekiness", we came back once again!. Actually it's Mac's sense of humour and Marian's warm welcome that help set this house apart from many of the rest. We arrived in the am, too early for our room to be ready. It was a cold, rainy, blustery day but we were made to feel at home in the beautiful, relaxing lounge, with hot tea and biscuits, until we could get into our room. "Our" room, as we like to think of it, was clean, beds comfy and the bathroom spotless. Breakfast was always a meal to look forward to, great variety and the porridge the best in all out travels. We love the fact that it's situated in a quiet neighbourhood full of older, character homes, with the sea and promenade within few minutes' walk. Portobello, with it's shops and restaurants is an easy stroll away, so we didn't have far to go for dinner. The bus stop is 1/2 block down the street, and a short 15 min ride to the city center. Mac and Marian are wonderful hosts, always going above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. We highly recommend Straven to anyone travelling to Edinburgh, you will not be disappointed.

Getting away from the hotels and staying in the B&B's is the only way to go. This nice little place is well located. Able to leave the car parked out front we went in and out of the city centre by bus from the end of the street. Too easy. Close to the beach it was nice to be able to take a few strolls along the water front as well. Mac is friendly and ever willing to help and provide guidance as required. We enjoyed our time in Edinburgh and our stay at Straven Guest House and would happily go back.

Very nice facility but just a little below the other B & B we stayed in while in Scotland. Good location with easy access to downtown via city bus lines. Nice walk along the water.

However, as a comparison what made the other B & B a cut above was that when we arrived they offered us coffee or tea and a snack, visited with us and provided us an overview of the area.

We arrived after a very long day of traveling at Straven Guest House and while Marian was very welcoming it would have been nice to offer us some simple refreshments.

Our stay was spread over two time periods and we did get a feeling during our second period that they ready for us to leave.

Thank you for the positive comments in your review but we were both very distressed to hear your concerns about our welcome. Pleased to hear that we were warm and welcoming at check-in. We try to give you comprehensive information to help you explore our wonderful city. We know that many small B and Bs do add an extra dimension by inviting you to join them for a refreshment and chat. We have always felt that, while some visitors would welcome such a friendly proposal, others may want to just get in, crash out and recover from the journey but do not want to offend their hosts. We have had regular feedback when discussing with our guests over the years how in their travels this has placed them in an awkward dilemma. We prefer therefore to provide refreshments and biscuits in the room and a comfy lounge and if anyone wants us to join them we are delighted to do so. More distressing is your feeling on your second visit. While this is not offered as an excuse you did arrive in the evening for a one night stopover before departure and left after breakfast. We had a number of people checking out that morning so perhaps did not have as much time to chat. We are both racking our brains as to how we could have given you such a horrific perception and can only apologise profusely – it was certainly not intended. We have been welcoming people into our home for eighteen years and are always keen to strike up friendly relationships with everyone. It is what makes our job a delight! NEVER would we think that we are ready for you to leave. Do come back and see us again and we shall try to dispel that impression for you!
