“Charming Castle-like Hotel”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

The hotel was very charming although the narrow and long corridors were quite an exercise with luggages. It was truly a pleasure to arrive at the hotel every time as there was an almost medieval feeling amongst the buildings.

The service in the reception was very helpful and the breakfast was good enough for us.

I can warmly recommend the hotel to families and couples. If you are looking for party time this would not be your choice.

Room Tip: The hotel appeared silent in every corner and was perfect was sleep and rest. Surroundings were appe...

The staff were lovely and very helpful. Our room was in a lovely quiet location and was clean & very comfortable. The WiFi connection was excellent. Breakfast was very good and the dining room was clean and tastefully decorated. The free parking enabled us to safely leave the car and walk into the centre of Edinburgh. We can thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Firstly it was no hassle getting going to the reception in Masson House as it is right next door.
The rooms are fairly basis but nice and clean. The downstairs is beautiful with mural ceilings and carved wooden coving, fireplaces and more. We spent two nights here, it was quiet and the breakfast was very good. A good choice of cerials, fruits and berries, ham and cheese etc, and the hot food if made to order and very nice. It does take 20 - 25 mins to walk into the city but there is a bus service if you need it. I would not recommend this hotel for people with walking difficulties and bewarned there is 4 floors and not lift.

Room Tip: Our friends had room 36 which was lovely but on the top floor.

Loved this hotel! Room was spacious, clean and beautiful. Bed was soooo comfy and it was huge!!! Breakfast was delicious and there was a great choice. Location was really good for us with a nice wee walk into the centre. Also really handy free parking which felt very secure. Staff were so friendly! I look forward to returning in the future.

I booked this hotel after reading the reviews and making a choice knowing all the facts that it is on the Edinburgh University campus and that the reception is in the other building. The room I had was the disabled room on the ground floor behind the lounge area this wasn't a problem but could be a little noisy with people walking past the window and also in the mornings (6am) doors would bang shut with people going through them. The room was comfortable with a wardrobe, safe iron and board and tea and coffee making facility. the room was clean and tidy and everything as you would expect (you wouldn't know it was on campus) The staff on the campus being reception or breakfast staff or security on the gate were great and very friendly with the exception of the night reception who was quite rude to me. The hotel is within walking distance of all the attractions in the city (2 miles to the Castle) The breakfast was nice and freshly cooked with a self service selection of cereal, fresh fruit, pasties and cold meats. I would recommend this hotel to anyone as long as they not it is not a traditional hotel but has everything you would expect from a hotel.

Room Tip: Read the reviews, yes its on a campus which means security for your car and parking all day on your...

We had mixed emotions about this hotel. The hotel is beautiful architecture inside and out with many of the original features still intact. This is why I picked it as well as the fact that it was near the halls of residence for the university which my son was visiting for open day. I wasn't really disappointed even though we didn't get a particularly interesting room.

First, check in was easy and our room was ready when we arrived. In addition, everything was clean. We were on ground floor and had two twin beds pushed together. This was perfect for us since we were a mother and teenage son traveling together. We had a handicapped bathroom which we did not choose but worked fine for our visit. The rooms are nicely updated and well equipped with iron, board, trouser press, easy-to-use safe, and nice smelling toiletries. We had trouble with the television, but my son is technically inclined and was able to fix the problem. The beds were comfortable enough but nothing special. Our only issue was when we woke up our second morning, it was cold (35 F) and there was no heat. We called to find out why and no on answered the phone. When we called back, we got security and were told that the heaters were on a timer and would not come on until 7 am. That is fine if you have nothing to do early in the morning but very uncomfortable if you do.

The staff at breakfast were a fabulous - they were attentive, helpful and a joy to be served by. And the breakfast itself was perfect and generous. Apparently, the breakfast area shifts between Masson House and Salisbury Green but was at Masson House while we were there. It was no trouble to move between buildings since they are next to each other.

First time in edinburgh and wanted to find somewhere nice. This place was
perfect with a view of Arthur's seat. Really easy to find and just across from bus stop which was 10 minutes from town. Lovely breakfast, either cooked breakfast, cereal, fruit, all sorts. Really clean and comfortable room with an amazing shower!
