I stayed at the Tigerlily whilst visiting the Edinburgh Festival in August. It has the bonus of being chic and boutique but the with the added extra bonus of old fashioned hopsitality and attention to detail. Room was very large with very comfortable beds, GHD's, rainforest showers etc. Breakfast was excellent and afternoon tea was very good. A very enjoyable experience.

I'll start with the location - in a great spot; very convenient and central.
We got a bit confused when we first arrived as it did not look like a hotel at all. To get to the tiny reception, one has to walk through a bar, a rather cool looking one and we liked it instantly! This place must have started as a bar/restaurant adding rooms afterwards. Nevertheless, the whole of downstairs area looked very stylish and hip so I had quite high expectations for our bedroom and indeed on first look it did look quite nice; wooden flooring, large bed, nice desk and bar area, etc. On the negative side the view was pretty rubbish, overlooking a wall of another building; the bathroom, despite its large size, did not have a bath. So much attention has been paid to the style that they obviously forgot to think about small comforts - having a good soak after all the sightseeing would really make the whole stay so much more relaxing, especially as there is no spa or pool attached to the hotel. I couldn't understand it as they obviously had the space in the bathroom for it but still decided to only put in a shower. The advertised iPod was nowhere to be seen (just the docking station) but it didn't bother us too much as we had our own music with us. The thing that did bother us though was the smell. The room had very unpleasant mouldy smell, especially when the air-con was on. (We were there during the hot spell so air con was much appreciated) This was probably the worst thing about it as the windows would not open and we couldn't air it. On the positive side, some nice touches included free internet, some lovely lemon and chocolate shortbreads in the coffee/tea pack and the coffee was the real filter stuff, not that instant nonsense. Anything else that a traveller might need was there; bathrobes, iron, umbrella, etc... They even thoughtfully left a fresh lime, essential for those G & Ts. The toiletries were by the White Company but they smelt like cheap cologne and I didn't like them at all. We had our dinner downstairs; the food was tasty but not that memorable, however the place was buzzing and we really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was so cool to be able to just come downstairs and you're in the middle of this very hip place. The breakfast, however, was rather disappointing. We were the only guests in the whole place and it felt very different. Although they serve it until late - it is very tiny (egss to order and nothing else with it) you do walk away still hungry! My eggs benedict were served with a slice of waffer thin ham from a packet (wrong, wrong, wrong!) and our OJ had more ice than the actual juice. One also does not get any refills of coffee or the OJ, which considering the price of B & B should be offered in my opinion. All in all - quite a nice, enjoyable stay but we did get the impression that the place is trying hard to be cool and luxury at the same time and not quite getting it right (yet!). I'm sure they'll get there eventually. Oh, and one last thing. Although we did put on the booking form that it was a special occassion - no effort was made to recognise this with any kind of special touches and it was never mentioned by any of the staff. Perhaps they don't bother reading their own web forms and customers' remarks?! Still, if the prices don't jump up, I would happily stay there again if in Edinburgh as it is a very trendy and quite a different place.

We visiting Edinburgh for a birthday and the hotel was spot on! Our room was massive, nice bathrooms, big bed, well decorated and pretty cool! The staff were really nice, always plenty of people dining and drinking in the bar and restaurant... location is brilliant too, right near lots of great restaurants, city centre, castle, comedy club etc... well worth a visit, or at the very least a cocktail on Saturday night!
