“Not convinced”
Reviewed 8 September 2012

We stayed here for a few nights last month and I have to say that I was not convinced. The welcome wasn't particularly friendly, breakfast was average, the location was okay but not brilliant.

Yes, some of the rooms are big and spacious but the bathrooms are absolutely tiny, and that means you can hardly move around, you can literally touch three walls and the shower screen when you're sitting down on the toilet! No wonder there are no pictures on the website...

Properties next to this B&B are being refurbished at the moment and although the noise wasn't loud enough to disturb us, I felt this should have been mentioned before booking to help us make an informed choice, as the views from the back room were mainly mucky back gardens with builders from 8am.

During our stay other guests were not pleased to have been charged above the standard rate without prior warning so this made us feel nervous about our own balance until check out. Thankfully we did not have problems on this respect. On the plus points, the beds were very comfy. However the house has subsidence and you do feel the room slipping away from you if you stand at one end. Overall, an ok experience, but far inferior to B&Bs elsewhere in the city.

A real shame that the customer service did not live up to standard during our visit.

We stayed four nights at the Cluaran in two rooms. Both were beautifully decorated. The bathrooms are new, tasteful and all one could ask for. The house is nothing short of a monument to the graciousness, artistry and warmth of Noreen and Ali ( and their little dog Lulu). There are bookshelves in every room stocked with lovely books including books on the art and architecture and natural history of Scotland. In addition, the beautifully lit breakfast room is the site of truly wonderful food ranging from fresh fruit and pastry, muesli or the sumptuous traditional Scottish breakfast cooked to order. The house is bathed in light from tall windows with shutters to close out the summer light at night. All is quiet and clean. A short walk to the Meadows. We didn't want to leave this B&B and this city!

It's already some time that we stayed at Cluaran but we had a wonderful time there!
We stayed for a week during the festival. Cluaran is situated in Brunswick at a quiet street, the best place to stay during festival season, because it is not as crowded as the city centre at that time. It is only a 15 minutes walk through the parks into the city centre and in the evening you can also have dinner in Brunswick.
We stayed in different rooms during our stay. The double room was very nice, but I really enjoyed the spacious Imperial room with its chaiselongue in front of the window overlooking the street.
The Scottish breakfast was brilliant. You can choose what you would like and I strongly recommend the black and white pudding.
The hosts were lovely and we enjoyed a lot of short chats with them.

As an exchange student traveling to Europe for the first time, I could not ask for a better welcome to my euro adventure. With Edinburgh being one of the most spectacular cities in the world to explore, the Cluaran Guest House is situated in a nice and quiet part of town that not only serves as a convenient launch-pad to explore the Scottish capital's breathtaking tourism resources, but also as a peaceful retreat from a full day's activities. The room I stayed in was meticulously clean and cozy, providing a place of ease from an otherwise exciting, but busy city atmosphere. Deprived of proper food for a good day and a half of travel, the next morning and subsequent two mornings upon my arrival, I was treated to sumptuous traditional Scotch breakfasts cooked up fresh with quality-sourced ingredients. Again, the Cluaran takes care of another common traveler’s dilemma – “Where can I get a decent breakfast?”.

Besides its basic function as a B&B property, the Cluaran is in itself a hub of art and culture. With architectural remnants of the original 1800's house still intact, either carefully preserved or seamlessly restored, one can appreciate such artifacts as the entrance’s Celtic-style stained glass door and the black marble fireplace in the public living room. The house is also adorned with various antique furnishings, as well as beautiful paintings drawn by none other than the owners themselves! Run by a lovely wife and husband team whose artistic vision, genuine hospitality, and attention to detail provides the property’s character and charm, the Cluaran Guest House is the “home away from home”, and a little more. A truly memorable experience!

We stayed at the Cluaran for four nights and we were treated well throughout. Taxis were booked for us , breakfast was superb (apparently the porridge was good too but I can't do porridge after several years of being force fed the stuff at boarding school) and the room was cosy and well furnished.

Room Tip: no idea which rooms are better - I only tried one!

Just when you think the Cluaran is at its peak, it has reached a higher level. We've grown accustomed to the luxurious cosiness/comfy beds/lovely and healthy breakfast/and so on and on, but to find out during our last (and certainly not final) stay that Ali and Noreen spent some hard earned cash on flatscreen tv's, free wifi and docking stations (e.g. for your iPhone) is a pleasant surprise. To say the very least.
Hoping for many happy returns, greetings from Holland
