“Welcoming, homely comfort”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

We stayed at Pillars House during the last week of June 2013 and I can only highly recommend it to anyone who would like to visit or stay in Leith or Edinburgh. The rooms were comfy and clean and the Full Scottish breakfast, served at the common dining table by the host, hearty Edna and her friendly staff, is certainly ballast enough to keep you running around Edinburgh's attractions all day. Prices for 2 adults and 2 young kids were entirely reasonable considering just how expensive Edinburgh can get during the summer season.

There is more than enough parking out back and there is also a well appointed municipal park with a great kids play area a very short walk away.

I'd happily return there any time.

Room Tip: If you have issues climbing steps then better make it clear when you book! There are rooms availabl...

We spent 3 nights in this really nice B&B, and I have to say we loved it! Rooms are really cosy, the neighborhood is very quiet but at the same time there are many great places for diner and pubs within walking distance and it is only a 25 min walk from city center...or 5 min by bus (many buses close-by). But the best part is how Edna, the owner, is a GREAT cook, with her famous full Scottish breakfast being the perfect start to a full day of visits and walks in Edinburgh: we didn't feel hungry at all before the end of the day!

I came with a 2 friends looking to find somewhere close to Leith Links where we were starting our MoonWalk. The location for this was great. Only a short walk away.
Everyone was so friendly and the room we had was very clean. The beds were comfortable and when we woke in the morning, we went down to the kitchen for breakfast. The breakfast was lovely, plenty to eat and much needed after our long walk the night before. I will definitely be keeping this place in mind if we come back to do the moonwalk again, or if i come back to visit Edinburgh sooner. Thank you for a great stay

An outstanding BnB with good facilities located very close to local amenities. Stayed here for four nights and will defiantly be back again.
The landlady was very kind and was more than happy to offer me a room which had microwave facilities.

I've stayed here three times now and have had lovely experiences each time. The rooms are very clean and comfortable and I appreciate having the ability to make tea or coffee available in the room. The kitchen/breakfast room is very light and bright and Edna makes it feel more like having breakfast at a friends house than at a guest house.

There are several buses close by that go directly to the center which makes getting into town if walking there doesn't appeal. It's also within an easy walk to Ocean Terminal and the Royal Britannia.

We stayed at Pillars House for 3nights while we looked around Edinburgh. Local bus stops were within easy walking distance, and one day we walked to the Royal Mile then back.

Edna is a wonderful friendly hostess, and she cooked great breakfasts. The room was large, warm, clean and comfortable. We felt very welcome and enjoyed our stay. We would definitely stay at Pillars Hous agin should we get the opportunity.

Edna has a great local knowledge and provided some great suggestions for meals, travel and sightseeing.

THANKS EDNA

Location is really bad to get into Edinburgh if that's your main choice of destination - buses or taxi. 40 minute walk into city centre.

We booked for Edinburgh Tattoo and this place spoiled our weekend. Room we were put in was "up a few steps" so we were told. It was actually 163 steps up very steep flights!

On the same floor were workmen leaving cables dangling loose and more dangerous items guests could trip over!

The bedroom had such a low ceiling we had to sleep at the wrong end of the bed!

Breakfast is uncomfortable there is only one table for about 8-10 guests so you sit with strangers and forced to book a time. Both days we were delayed as previous guests were late eating food!

Breakfast was good at least, cooked fresh whilst you are sat in the kitchen. Edna forced a guest to try haggis although he clearly stated he did not want any but she went on and on and on... Doesn't she realise guests are paying to eat what they like and are on holiday?

Bed was uncomfortable so we didn't get a good night's sleep.

Please don't book a room here, save up and get one in Edinburgh city centre - it's a fantastic city!

Edna M, Owner at Pillars House, responded to this review, 25 June 2013
I don't often respond to reviews however I have to rectify the inaccuracy's of the above review.
First of all there is NOT 163 steps to the top floor and if anyone can find more than 70 steps from the street level they can stay free of charge.
This is an old Victorian building with 16ft high ceilings and as you can see in my web site the first set of stairs are far from steep.
Secondly I would not expect any Bed and Breakfast or Guest House in Edinburgh to undertake any work or refurbishments during the Festival and Tattoo period and we are no different. We had no work being carried out in in our establishment at that time.
Constructive criticism for any business is more than welcome and we take that on board.
We apologize if our Dinning arrangements and beds where not to this Guests liking, however we do understand that we all have different preferences.
Regarding the location we are in Edinburgh and would advise anyone to read other reviews or Google map us.
