As advertised, Mike picked us up from the train station which was very helpful. After arriving at the B&B, we were offered tea and shortbread. The room was very clean and cozy. They have one other bedroom which is bigger, but it had already been booked. Maybe next time! We were within easy walking distance of the Castle and other attractions plus there was a deli right on the corner on our way to the Royal Mile which was convenient for a quick lunch. Mike and Ann went out of their way to make us feel at home. Mike was a fountain of information about local attractions and provided several maps to help us. Ann was kind enough to arrange for an early taxi the day we left for the airport. I will definately stay here every time I visit Edinburgh.

My husband and I stayed here only one night at the end of a trip to Scotland and were very sorry to be leaving so soon. And we kicking ourselves for not having found it earlier. The Tantallon was easily the bed B&B we stayed in!

Mike and Ann are excellent hosts and make you feel at home right from the minute you shake their hands. Our room was enormous with a beautiful king size bed and bathroom facilities that were certainly above par for B&B standards. The room also had all sorts of brochures on the city and the hosts are super willing to help any way they can.

Breakfast had perhaps a slightly smaller buffet as such but all the more hot off the stove made by Mike. We both particularly remember the scrambled eggs and the coffee being a real treat as not everyone knows how to make them well. And Mike makes absolute certain you don't take on the city (or the airport) on an empty stomach!

The location on the south side of the city is also superb, getting you out of the hubbub but within easy walking distance (and with significantly less of an incline compared to the other side of the city). About 15 min. to Victoria St or 20 to High St. Also quite easy to find the airport from the location, saving you the harrowing journey through the city.

All in all we were very sad to leave here so soon and would stay there again in a heartbeat. A real treat!!

We stayed here for 2 nights in June 2009, the first 2 nights of our trip to Scotland. My husband and I had one room, and my sister another room. Both were very nice and roomy. Mike and Ann were very good hosts. The location is good - easy walk to all the tourist attractions in the city, and close to several nice restaurants. Wonderful breakfasts, great showers, comfortable beds, very clean. Nothing is lacking. You can't go wrong here!

I agree with everybodies comments on this site. I dare you find another b&b like this anywhere in Britain! Excellent value for money. A little gem with Mike and Ann as wonderful hosts. Mike will try and fill you up every morning with a hearty breakfast of local produce and more toast than you could possibly eat in one sitting. The beds are to die for and make the whole trip worth while. A short walk to arthurs seat and the royal mile (about 15 minutes) with many pubs and eatery's along the way.
This was our second outing to Tantallon that we made longer because of the excellent first visit.

We were almost loathe to write a review of the Tantallon B&B as we wanted to keep the secret to ourselves...but great places with wonderful hosts such as Mike and Ann rarely stay secret for long and it seems that others feel the same way as we did about our stay.

We enjoyed 5 nights with Ann and Mike in their lovely Georgian home which was easy to find with a Sat Nav. We also found that the B&B was on the "right side" of Edinburgh for day trips to the Scottish Borders which Ann and Mike recommended to us - so glad we took their recommendation.

They also recommended a lovely pub nearby which serves fantastic food - we ate there at night and enjoyed it so much we didn't bother trying the other restaurants nearby. A laundromat and other facilities such as a post office an internet cafe are all within walking distance too so all in all, a handy location.

To sum up, we had a wonderful stay, fantastic hosts, breakfasts that have ruined us forever, the most comfortable bed, easy walking distance to the Royal Mile and the list goes on and on.

We were amazed by Mike and Ann Walsh's B&B, their hospitality and service. This couple genuinely enjoy taking care of others. We lost our way getting to the place and Mike kindly came and found us and showed us the way to the B&B. The room we stayed in was amazing. Everything was colour-coordinated. We had a huge King Size bed and a huge bedroom. The bedroom had chairs, closets, coat hangers, tv, a plethora of books on tourist attractions in Scotland, a selection of Twinings teas, fresh milk waiting for us, and buttermilk shortbreads. The bathroom was clean, towels changed daily and hand-made soap, quality shampoo.. the lot. We had the most comfortable bed ever, and fluffy pillows and quilt. No complaints here whatsoever! Mike and Ann were so lovely, we thought it was too good to be true. This is truly personal service.

Breakfast was amazing. Mike prepared a fresh fruit salad for us while Ann made us a full Scottish / English breakfast - eggs, bacon, tomato, sausage with the best homemade bread and jam. Cereal is also an option. I wish all the hotels I stayed at during my trip to Europe, UK and HK were like this. I felt at home and I couldn't wait to get back to the B&B! 100% guaranteed you'll love this place. Only problem is if you are elderly, there are some stairs so it may be hard to carry luggage up.

  • Liked — Everything
  • Disliked — Can't think of any - maybe no internet access and stairs to climb (was hard to take up luggage) and also a bit hard to find the place and it was about a 20 - 25 min walk to the Edinburgh Castle

Amiable hosts, very helpful. Very nice and spacious en-suite room, very clean. Several books and files with information about sights and restaurants in the room. Quiet location, nevertheless only 15-20 minutes walk (slow-moving) to Royal Mile resp. Princess Street. Delicious Full Scottish breakfast, especially the fresh fruit which was prepared and served by Mike was great! In short: super B&B, it was marvellous at Tantallon House and we enjoyed our stay!!
