“Tired and musty - disappointed.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 July 2014 via mobile

Location was one of the main attractions and this was only a short walk into the city centre so thumbs up for this. However, after being welcomed by Richard and shown our room we felt disappointed. The furnishings were tired and very dated (not retro by design)! The shower room smelt particularly unpleasant as there was mold on the wall and the sealant around the shower tray was very mildewy. Showers were off the agenda. Thankfully we were only staying one night otherwise it would have meant a hasty relocation.

Dear Peter

Thank you for your stay and for your review. I'm concerned you felt your experience wasn't great. Owning a Georgian building has it's joys and challenges I have come to realise. I have invested in a de-humidifier to help combat dampness (and mould). I will refresh the shower area as soon as possible.

Kind regards
Richard

I spent a couple of nights in one of the lower floor rooms. Richard welcomed us warmly and checking in was no problem. Despite being below pavement level, the room was fairly bright. However it was a little damp/musty. The bed was a little small for a couple and the shower was pretty much as compact as it gets. Other than that it's a convenient location and I appreciated, though I didn't use, the microwave and fridge in the corridor.

An excellent place to stay, near the city centre and bus stops. The host, Richard, is very friendly and helpful. No food is provided, but there is plenty of choice nearby in local cafes, bars and restaurants. You are also welcome to bring takeaways or food in to microwave. I recommend the Day ticket which allows unlimited travel for one day on buses and trams around Edinburgh for £3.50.

Located in a central area, within 5 minutes of the Playhouse where we were attending a show.
Easy to find, if you walk the right way unlike me!

Thank you very much for a lovely stay, Richard!

Arrived late but still welcomed by Richard. The room suited our needs for a much needed break. Being in a great location meant we were able to explore the main tourist areas in Edinburgh and more before returning to the quietness of Lantern House. The private entrance to the basement rooms was great as we could come and go without worrying about disturbing anyone. The bed was very comfy and there was a great sized shower. We will return.

Just returned from a lovely weekend in Edinburgh, having stayed at the Lantern Guest House. We were provided with plenty of information from our host, Richard, including a map of the city (which we couldn't have done without) and details on how to get to the guest house from the airport and how much this should cost.

Our room was simple but cosy, with everything we needed. It was nice and warm throughout the night, and the bed was comfy ensuring a good nights sleep. There were spare blankets and pillows available in our room. We were provided with towels, and even a hair dryer. We also had an en-suite, tv, tea and coffee making facilities and free wi-fi.

The coded door was a handy touch meaning we could enter and exit our room freely without bothering other guests or our hosts. In the hallway, we had the option of using a fridge, microwave, cutlery and crockery.

In all we had everything we could require, and plenty of freedom to do as we wished. The location was excellent, about 10 minutes walk from the centre, and we certainly did not miss out on breakfast as it meant we could enjoy the delicious food of Edinburgh.

A really pleasant stay, we would come here again and definitely recommend!
