“Excellent- rebooked while we were there.”
Reviewed 14 November 2009

We have had an excellent stay at the Star Villa. The rooms are spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable. We have stayed in some luxurious hotels around the world in the last 20 years but this gem in the heart of Edinburgh matches and betters most. The host Doreen cannot do enough to make your stay perfect and her breakfasts are out of this world. We have already booked to return with other members of our family and will return time and again. It is within easy walking distance of all the attractions (never used the car in the 4 days we were there, no need to). Whilst visiting the castle we saw the Scottish crown jewels but have found the real jewel of Edinburgh in this excellent guest house. Please go here you will not be disappointed.

Last weekend (16/17th May 2009) my girlfriend and I stayed in Star Villa guesthouse.
It was an excellent base to explore the city. Doreen the owner was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in room 3 which was very large although contained 4beds (3singles and a double) overlooking the road; recently modernised and spacious. Well located with off road parking and 15mins walk to the centre and as described on the website. It is of a good standard but not a hotel, but is cheap and friendly.

We were offered a double room with a separate bathroom for £35 per person per night. We asked (by email) if it was a quiet room, and we were told that it was. But when we arrived, we were shown to a room on the ground floor, opposite the front door, and next to the kitchen (with constant radio). We didn't sleep a wink on our first night, because we heard people come and go through the front door, and we heard people (e.g. Doreen) in the kitchen. We bought earplugs, and slept SLIGHTLY better on our second night. The breakfasts were OK, although the 'full Scottish breakfasts' were rather "rubbery". Also, Doreen charged 5% to pay by card, which caught many of the "foreigners" out. Overall, very disappointing (and not worth £70 per room per night).

We returned recently from travelling Scotland, spending our last two nights at the Star Villa Guest House in Edinburgh. On arrival we were given a friendly welcome by Doreen, owner, who took us upstairs to our room.Entering the room the view from the window was of a building site.We said we must be in the wrong room as when booking we had been told we had views of the Castle.Told to look to the right. The view of the Castle was still not obvious to us.The room looked stylish on the net, but in reality it was bland & small with no warmth or charactor to it.The ensuite had areas/corners that were dirty,The towels provided were hard & old.Breakfast was quite good with a choice of cereals, yoghurts, waffles & a full Scttish breakfast. We had booked the Star Villa due to description, location & photos on the net,We feel disappointed in our choice & would not return.
