This is the ultimate B&B for those who appreciate a place not only as it is, but as it has been in the past. For the literary-minded the mere fact of staying in Robert Louis Stevenson's house will be an enormous enticement to stay there. For those unfamiliar with his works it could well be the spur to new discoveries. The house is simply amazing, from the ornamental swords displayed on the walls of the grand central staircase, to the Duplo bricks strewn in the most homely and heart-warming manner across the dining room floor. On arrival I was shown up to 'The African Room' by the most self possessed 11 year old boy I have ever encountered. As to the manner born he answered all my questions, gave me the background to the room's highly unusual decor, and favoured me with a first hand account of ostrich riding. On a practical note, the bed is comfortable, the tiny ensuite bathroom is beautifully designed and the coffee at breakfast excellent.

You feel that welcoming friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in the front door. If you want to have that feeling of staying in a home away from home rather then just another hotel, this is the place. Breakfast is really appetising, you want go hungry and you will probably get a free history lesson. I enjoyed every moment. The whole family showed embrace and kindness allowing me to feel at home and relax. Very close to the city centre, only five minutes. The family will help with out with any travel advice you need to know. Enjoy your stay there like I did!!

It has been my first time in Edinburgh but for 100% I can say that this is the best place to stay in. The host family is very kind, in the morning you can expect fresh coffee and good breakfast. House is comfortable (family atmosphere), placed in calm neighborhood with great location for tourists. Its close to Princes Street (shopping area), George Street, New & Old Town (clubs, Scottish pubs and very good restaurants). All major sightseeing attractions like Castle, museums etc. are in walking distance.

Not only did I learn about the Stevenson History , but had all assistance possible for exploring the city, historical sites to cultural events , restaurants etc.
breakfast with the lively and delightful family( one evening spontaneously included in a family dinner)
Comfortable bed, beautiful decor . The house reflects the well travelled family . An experience I will repeat again and again

Forget organised tours and stroll along here from Charlotte Square. It's Edinburgh's answer to Mayfair but much more. R L Stevenson was born in this desirable street and John Buchan also lived here. Allow yourself to be transported back in time and soak up the peace into your veins. Admire the thought that residents are putting into the care of these lovely homes, the magnificent drapes and curtains, the basement gardens, and drench yourself in the atmosphere where literary giants spent their formative years. Wander down the mews alley ways and delight your literary senses. It won't get much better than this.

I stayed at Macfie's for a weekend with a friend of mine. He was Portuguese, I'm German. It was as if we'd opened the door to another world! We had an incredible time with the family who provided us with the finest scottish food and taught us loads about there family, Edinburgh and the Stevenson house. Mrs. Macfie told us were to go and what to do and I think you can't get a better feeling for Edinburgh and all that it stands for within two days. The city is breathtaking, but thanks to you we really got to appreciate all the details a lonely traveller would never see! Thank you so much!
I can only recommend a visit!

I really stayed in a lot of B&Bs around Britain and having family contact is one of the reasons for it. At Stevenson House my daughter played with the other kids. We had Diner together and really felt like being part of the family. John and Felicitas are great hosts and you immediatly feel at home.
But not forget the great location. Right in the middle of Edinburgh but still quite enough to get the rest you need after a day of walking about.

So, great place if you have kids or if you just want to feel at home.
And .... they even speak perfect German - all of them.
