Popped in for a coffee and light bite. Not disappointed, had a lovely light lunch with coffee and cakes. Food was tasty and the coffee was good. Service was excellent

We decided to have lunch here after spending time browsing the delights in the deli / wine shop at the front of the building. We were greeted with smile, shown to a corner table, and a jug of water appeared within seconds.

The antipasti for 2 offered an excellent selection of salami and cold meats, mozzarella di bufala, bruschetta, vegetables and well-dressed leaves. The pasta to follow was superb; in particular my rigatoni with a tomato and hot sausage sauce was outstanding. We liked the unusual and high quality selection of wines, several of which are available by the glass.

Other reviews have commented about the service. We found it warm, friendly, professional and well-informed about the food.

In summary, Valvona & Crolla served us our best lunch in Edinburgh and we recommend it most strongly.

Arrived early afternoon 26 Mar, several free tables so no wait. Shown to a table and as my daughter was thirsty we asked for a jug of water. All very pleasant - so far so good. Time passed, no water; 3 further requests failed to elicit desired result - instead the waitress, pointedly perhaps, busied herself supplying later arrivals. The staffing level may have been too low for demand but that can't excuse the 3 reminders being ignored. The food itself was good, but quite pricey (light lunch for 3, over £50) and with that take on customer service, I won't rush back.

I'm normally loathe to write very negative reviews unless convinced that the opprobrium is absolutely justified. On this occasion, it is. My experience chimes exactly with that of the EdinburghNikon review of 7 March: "There's a bad atmosphere and there needs to be more smiles and less stern faces."

"iconic" is a badly-overused word; but Valvone & Crolla is, well, iconic. More hard-to-find brands of pasta than you can shake a stick at; superb deli counter; spectacular wine range. In fact, this has to be the best-stocked Italian deli in Scotland. So, it's a real shame that the "stern faces" are accompanied by a really chilly atmosphere and a staff attitude that I found barely civil. What happened to the traditonal reputation of Italians: warm, friendly, hospitable. Not here, alas.

Living on it's reputation? Doing customers a favour just by letting them in the door to spend hard cash? I don't know. I can only say that, on this first visit (that won't be repated) much needs to be done in the attitude department.

(Because it was just the service that was the problem, the food gets a high score.)

Thank you for the feedback. We pride ourselves on a welcoming atmosphere, a warm welcome and great customer service, I am sorry that you feel that this was not the case on your first visit to our cafebar. I hope that you will come and try us again on your next trip to the deli.

Thank you
Tracey

The title says it all the owners should do something about it. There's a bad atmosphere and there needs to be more smiles and less stern faces.
