Description: Located in a historic 16th century building at the gates of Edinburgh Castle, James Thomson's Witchery is the most atmospheric and spectacular dining destination in the city. A unique setting, stunning interiors and superlative food, wine and service combine to create memorable dining experiences for locals, visitors and celebrities alike. The staff use the best of Scotland's produce including Angus beef, lamb, game and seafood. Nestled in the most historic part of the building, The Witchery dining room is rich, warm and atmospheric, with tapestries, mirrors and carvings hanging on oak-panelled walls. Spectacularly painted and gilded ceilings, similar to those at the Palace of Holyrood House, celebrate the links with France in the Auld Alliance, whilst much of the panelling was rescued from St Giles Cathedral and a Burgundian Chateau. Gilded antique leather screens, polished church candlesticks and opulent red leather seating complete the surroundings of this splendid dining location.

Elegant dining room with beautiful woodwork and a very pretty ceiling. Wonderful cuisine in a lovely atmosphere. They also have a less formal dining room down a short walkway. Find this in a small close near the castle. A close is a small off the street walkway.
Reservations for dinner necessary. And sometimes for lunch. A great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the Royal Mile.

If memory serves, this is the best food I've had in Scotland. If Isle of Mull scallops are on the menu, don't hesitate. The service was delightful. One tip: if you visit at lunchtime, don't sit facing one of the windows facing the Royal Mile. The light can be blinding, and keep you from appreciating the ambiance - which would be a shame.

What a remarkable setting. A gorgeous restaurant lit only by candles. We loved the setting. Unfortunately, the service was PAINFULLY slow and we found ourselves begging for water refills (for bottled water service which we were paying dearly for). The wait staff was woefully inattentive. And the food was good but not great. Would recommend only for the atmosphere.

The room is fabulous. The tables are very close to each other but we had a good table. The staff were very professional. I had the seashell bisque my husband had the the oyster rockefeller both were very good. For mains we had the monkfish and prime rib. Both were excellent. For dessert my husband had the pudding selection which was a perfect end to a perfect meal.

This restaurant was recommended by a colleague of mine, and what a great suggestion! The staff are friendly and very professional, we had a drink in front of us in no time at all. Everything on the menu is mouthwatering, my partner and I shared the Lamb Wellington, easily the best re-creation of that dish I have ever had.

You will spend half your time looking around you as you soak in the gorgeous setting of your amazing meal. Enjoy!
