“Soon to have a Michelin star methinks! ”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2014 via mobile

I would rate this every bit if not better than the other Michelin star establishments in Edinburgh. The food was absolutely out of this world on the taster menu. Service was warm friendly and efficient. The meal wasn't rushed or leaving you wishing less waiting times between courses - tempo was perfect which I think is a difficult thing to achieve. The dining room is stunning making you feel like you are Vespa and Daniel Craig from a Bond Movie. Only gripes are firstly no cheese board just a baked cheese and secondly a complete bug bear of mine was people wearing jeans - surely a restaurant of this stature should impose a dress code. Happy to overlook these gripes though as really really fabulous food and wonderful service. Look forward to returning.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014

This is foodie heaven! Best of ingredients and expertly crafted delicious food, with attentive but unobtrusive service and knowledgeable sommelier - you really couldn't ask for more. Why this place does not have a Michelin star I have no idea - but I'm sure they must be in the running for the next allocation. We have dined here now on 3 evenings; this is a 'special occasion' restaurant but if I could I'd be there once a week! If you're lucky enough to be seated near the window you will have a lovely view over the Edinburgh vista. It is expensive but the amount of effort that goes into preparing the food is well worth it. Its a rarified atmosphere so don't go there expecting to enter a loud, buzzy room - it's very genteel but not stuffy or pompous and perfect for a romantic evening!

“Fantastic food, service and location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2014

A truly a magnificent place. Everything was perfect. Had the7 course menu with wine pairing. A must. What really made the evening perfect was the window table with a fantastic view to the castle. I recommend you to ask specific for such a table when making the reservation.

“Excellence!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2014

The Pompadour serves delicious meals in grand style. The room is ornate, with some tables having a view to Edinburgh Castle, where we were seated. There is also an ante room for drinks prior to your meal if you like. The menu offers a variety of spectacular dishes that arrive as much works of art as of food. In particular, we enjoyed a couple of first courses, one scallops, the other rabbit. Both outstanding. Then came the duck entree, also excellent. Desserts were a mango souffleé and a simple chocolate ice-cream. This being our twentieth anniversary, they added a wonderful touch of a little bonus chocolate at the very end, including a plate inscribed with well wishes for us. Service is conducted by professionals at the top of their game, truly flawless efforts on everyone's part. Did I mention the wine list? Extensive and varied selections that will have you wishing you could try many bottles through the meal. All in all, this place deserves all the five stars it gets. I hope to return soon!

“Great service and ambiance, main course slightly too salty”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 June 2014

The Pompadour is set in a 1920s pastel coloured room with hand painted wallpaper and a ridiculously massive pink chandelier with tables nicely far away from each other. The décor and ambiance is just lovely. Fantastic service with very friendly waiters. Totally full house and yet enough space between everyone that it still felt quiet and intimate.

Our table had a mixture of the A La Carte menu and the taster menu, both delicious! My only negatives would be that all our main courses were slightly too salty; my soufflé was just enormous and the cheese course on the taster menu was also huge (we actually got 4 plates and shared it amongst us). The amuse-bouche, palate cleanser and petit fours were all scrumptious. A lovely gesture was getting some tiny Madeline biscuits on our way out!

If I'm going to be brutally honest, the a la carte menu here is only £3 cheaper than The Number One at the Balmoral. If you really want exquisite fine dining, go to the Number One instead. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and will be coming back.

Dear Guest,

Thank you reviewing our restaurant we are always keen to hear feedback from tables and TA gives a good platform for this. It is always good to hear that the team are very friendly it is something that you can’t teach that warmth and friendliness.

The Pink chandelier you mention was a little worrying when I first heard about the plan for it to go in I was a little worried but I really think it sets the room with its ornate little porcelain roses. We look forward to welcoming you once again to The Pompadour by Galvin.

Kind Regards.
