“Kind of left hungry”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

We visited the restaurant for the first time, we wanted to try some Italian food. Entering the restaurant we got a lovely welcome, and invited to sit down to the front half of the restaurant, which I later regret to agreed on, since when I went more inside I found the inner half more atmospheric and lovely. The staff was very friendly and helpful, I certainly believe the owner was present as well and very kindly chatted with us a bit.

After a long read of their menu, I decided on the Tortellini Alla Genovese, which I found very tasty, loved the touch of pesto and the Parmesan on top. My boyfriend ordered Salmone Ai Porri, which also looked very delicious, but the salmon was more like cooked, not fried, as described in the menu.

We found the portions too small for the price, and kind of left the restaurant hungry, but it is indeed a lovely place!

“Bland, tasteless food with no apology”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

I don't know what the other reviewers ordered here to give such glowing reviews, as the salad and pizzas we ordered were terrible. The staff were friendly enough but completely unapologetic when we complained twice about the food. We only ate it because we were starving and they were obviously going to charge us for it.

We started with a Panzanella salad which bore no resemblance to any Panzanella I've ever had. The menu promised "crusty bread, onions, cucumber, tomato and basil marinated with olive oil and a touch of white wine vinegar". What we got was a glorified garden salad from a bag, half a tomato, topped off with a small sprinkling of dry "croutons". Basil and crusty bread, the key components of a Panzanella, were entirely absent. Yet it cost a whopping £4.90 and no more than a hand-full.

My girlfriend ordered the Capricciosa which on the menu had a picture of a chili next to it and boasted of "homemade chili". There wasn't a hint of chili, just plain passata. It was bland, with a base stiff as a board that tasted worse than a supermarket pizza. As for the toppings.... three dry, tasteless olives and artichoke that was still cold, clearly coming from a tin. My choice was the Stagioni, similarly it was bland, sparsely adorned with tasteless toppings and a base to match. No care had been taken in the presentation. Both pizzas were smaller than a dinner plate, yet cost around £9 each.

We mentioned to two separate waiters that our food was below average, missing ingredients and overpriced. No apology was made, no explanation given for missing essential ingredients and no offer of compensation. Instead, we were asked if we'd like to tip. Not likely!

he Partners and Staff at Giuliano's take all comments very seriously and have investigated your particular comments.
Firstly the Panzanella Salad is in the side salad section of our menu at £4.60 not £4.90 and it is as described on the menu. The bread may not have been crusty as it would have absorbed a lot of the dressing.
Secondly, we do not use passata on our pizzas as we prefer to use our own tomato pizza topping. Our chilli's are grown in a village in The Salerno region by one of the partners family and are on display and available to all customers. We feel it is up to our customers how hot they would like their food as it is not to everyone's taste.
The pictures on our menu are of a random selection of dishes available.
Thirdly, the toppings on are pizzas come from various sources, some fresh, some tinned and some jarred. If you can provide details of where we could purchase fresh artichokes that could be cooked on a pizza then I would be delighted. If they were cold then I do apologise, this should not have been case. Our bases are made in house excluding our gluten free bases and are made fresh daily, the recipe has been the same since we opened.
Fourthly our regular size pizza is 9" and 12" bases are available on request. If you look at pizza prices all around Edinburgh you will see our price of £9.00 is average.
Lastly, the waitress serving you asked if everything was ok and got a reply of 'yes, everything was fine'. Our staff would NOT have ignored such comments of the degree in which you have explained. They would also have informed the manager and every effort would have been made to try and rectify the problems before you left the restaurant.
We value peoples comments good or bad as it helps us look at what we do and strive for better so thank you for taking the time to let us know of your problems. It is just a shame we weren't given the chance to rectify them there and then.
regards angelo

“Fantastic!”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

This restaurant never fails to deliver! I love how it never seems to change but the standards and service are always maintained, we visited just recently and had booked ahead, when we arrived a sign was in the door informing the night was fully booked, it was as busy as it could be, I'm glad we had booked! There were some tables that had booked the pre theatre menu, and spent most of the night moaning about the service, I however disagreed, although there may have been a slight delay it was understandable as it was so busy, the staff handled it incredibly well and are a credit to the restaurant! The food was fantastic, good quality ingredients cooked perfectly and presented well! I for one can't wait until my next visit! Keep up the good work!

“Superb meals and Service”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

There are two Giuliano's restaurants in Edinburgh, both are owned by the same company , the main restaurant is in the city opposite the playhouse theatre and extremely busy with folk visiting the theatre ! I use the second restaurant down on Leith waterside, a bit more quieter than the other but equally as good, the food is excellent and reasonably priced, you can dine at your leisure it is not as frantic as the main place, the waiters are extremely friendly and helpful genuine Italians, nothing is too much trouble for the staff nod most times you can request something that is not on the menu and your request will be met! All in all an excellent restaurant.

Thank you for your feedback on Trip Advisor.
We appreciate any kind of feedback as it helps us learn and improve, but positive feedback is always greatly appreciated by Management and Staff. Not many people take the time to praise an establishment and it helps make our jobs much more worthwhile.
We look forward to welcoming you back.
