We went in for lunch while we were in town. The food was the usual lunchtime dishes, steak pie, fish soup, sandwich, baked potato. The dishes had were tasty but not hot enough. The staff were helpful if a bit disorganised. I asked for tartare sauce to go with my fish and I was left standing at the till for a good 4 minutes before he appeared back with it.
The price was O.K. for what we had, however Standing Order do the same dishes cheaper and tastier and their setup runs like clockwork. The Mount Royal could learn a lot from them.

Popped in for lunch while in town, and was very pleasantly surprised. Although this restaurant is located right on Princes Street, it was mostly patronised by pensioner ladies, who obviously know a bargain when they find one. It was not too busy, and had a pleasant atmosphere.

The restaurant itself is a little on the tired side, with some of the seats looking a bit careworn, but the - mostly young - staff are very friendly and helpful. It is self-service, but I was very impressed at the attention which the waiting staff took in helping less able customers carry their food to their tables and how polite they were.

The food is fairly standard lunchtime fare, with a soup-and-a-sandwich deal, steak pie, macaroni cheese, fish and chips, etc., but at a very reasonable price, and including self-service veg, potatoes and chips.

The view is the big draw: we had a table in a bay window, with views across Princes Street Gardens to the Bank of Scotland HQ, along to the National Gallery, and up to Edinburgh Castle. Despite the despoliation of the current tramworks, the view alone makes the visit worthwhile.

We will be going back soon to try the afternoon tea.

I stayed here for two nights 27/28 january 2012 the bed is the most uncomfortable I've ever tried to sleep in and the rooms are a bit snug but the view of the fire escape outside of my window was breathtaking - not.
In the positive side the breakfast was really nice and the city of Edinburgh itself was enjoyable
