“Delicious food and fantastic service”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

This place is absolutely delicious! My wife and I love Indian food and frequently go to places to in New York City for Indian Food. Kismot had some of the best Indian food we have ever had! The house special Deshmi Chicken curry was mouth-wateringly delicious. We also loved the mixed vegetables in Lahore sauce.

The service was friendly and attentive. Marta, our waitress, made us feel very welcome and made some great recommendations. All-in-all a top rate dining experience.

Lastly, it’s a BYOB (no corkage fee), so you can bring your favorite bottle of wine or beer (pick it up from Sainsbury Local or Tesco Express nearby) to enjoy with this delicious feast!

“One of the best currys ever”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

Came here after reading it was ranked #1 Indian restaurant in the UK 2013 and it did not disappoint. The food here was truly remarkable my girlfriend had the chocolate massallam which I was dubious about but was an almost perfect balance of flavours where as I had the forash which whilst delicious had a very.... Mexican flavour however add a bit of the mango sauce and its back to India. The meal was incredibly reasonably priced and for the two of us cost less than £40 for a full meal. Though you must remember this place is BYOB and does not sell alcohol so do like we did and hit the Tesco express just down the road beforehand. Whenever I have a trip to Edinburgh I will be returning here.

“Tough to review...”
Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

Judging by other commentators, I think we probably had an unusual waiting experience here last night.

To begin the evening, the waiter (who we believe was probably new to the waiting world), after taking our order nearly walked off without asking if we would like drinks, then we waited, and waited: It was not busy and we were not in any particular rush, but to be sat with only a jug of water in a nearly empty restaurant for nearly 15 minutes left us feeling a little neglected. We even had to call the waiter to remind him about the drinks, "We apologise, short staff, someone called in sick...", yada, yada: Four drinks, three waiting staff, empty restaurant, not buying it. Even then only three of the four drinks were provided, with one friend sat nursing his water. Then another waiter came over to take our order, despite us already ordering, so we informed him that our order had been made. Strangely, the same waiter came a second time a few minutes later asking for our order again! When the food arrived, they made a mistake in the order (paneer naan came out rather than a peshwari) that was quickly rectified. They were reminded of the last drink order, which required the waiter to come back a few minutes later to ask what was ordered again (four times in total for a chai tea)! It was also apparent that they had forgotten about a vegetable dansak, which again was rectified after a few minutes. The waiting fiasco didn't end there, they lost the food bill and came back to ask us what we ordered so that they could bill us. The confused/unimpressed expressions on our faces meant the waiter decided it was probably best to look harder for the bill rather than ask us to reel off our order again. Fortunately, whether by design or not, hard to tell, they massively undercharged us, didn't add in the drinks and seemed to miscalculate the bill by about £20. The surly attitude of the waiter didn't make me want to go back check after all the errors made.

However, to their credit... The food was excellent! Though the sag aloo seemed to contain no potato (quite happy with that; if there had been a sag only option, I would have chosen it over the sag aloo) and the dansak was lacking in lentils, the tastes were really great. I ordered the Veg haggis Bruna and, although I decided haggis wasn't the best in a curry to my taste, the irn bru based sauce was delicious. I thought the bindi and sag were some of the best I have tasted and the portion sizes were generous. This is clearly a much more important factor than their waiting ability! However, the tasty but lentil-lacking dansak will probably prevent us from coming back, as it is my girlfriend's favourite dish (she did not like the taste as much as other dansaks we have had in Edinburgh), unless we want to show the novelty of the irn bru, haggis or killer kismot curries to guests.

The restaurant itself was lacking in atmosphere, dance music is a poor accompaniment to eating, so fortunately it was at a very low volume. There was also a brief spell when they put the football on. A group of people were stood in the centre of the restaurant 'oohing' and 'ahhing', which was distracting, loud and quite unwelcome in a restaurant. Fortunately this was brief, only about 15 minutes.

All in all, it was a shame that so many mistakes were made. The waiter we had had was friendly though inexperienced and I think the frustration of the mistakes made another, more experienced waiter, a little surly with us, which was uncalled for. The food was great, and my rating is purely made up of that factor as everything else left a lot a room for improvement.

“Fantastic food”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

If one like Indian food, then you should not miss to visit this restaurant. We went in as a group of six. All went out really full. Indian food at its best. Keep it up. Nice waitress and very caring. They even let us take our wine to the restaurant. When in Edinburgh definitely will visit again. The nan bread was nice and warm. Very pleasing to eat. We ordered six different dishes so we could mix and taste the food. All was incredible well prepared with an excellent palate. I have one word for this restaurant just "Excellent"
