“An enjoyable ride thanks also to the wit of the onboard staff”
Reviewed 29 November 2013

Definitively worth while to visit the Falkirk wheel, a real technical achievemnt. The venue is very well organised and the shop providing plenty to keep the family busy while waiting for the ride. The ride itself is quite short, but really meant to go up and down the wheel rather than a proper canal ride. Once aboard we were well amused/entertained from the man in charge. He certainly knew how to make people enjoy the ride.

“Engineering marvel”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

I watched this site develop from a grass field into a site of outstanding engineering beauty. The wheel is structurally amazing and functions as a rotating boat lift, yet driven by motors demanding minimal energy. Srtand beside the wheel and as it rotates and you hear virtually no noise. Look closely and you can see the sensors which control the final positioning of the wheel before it stops and then opens to release the boats.
A must for engineers and those interested in engineering.

There is a good visitor centre with a good cafe.

“Wow - what a feat of engineering - even though it was closed”
Reviewed 27 November 2013

Our trip to Falkland was at the wrong time of year. The Wheel is closed for maintenance all week and we were disappointed that we couldn't go in a canal boat and experience at first hand.

Even though the men were working on the maintenance, we found a friendly workman who showed us round. Wethen walked up to the Union Canal and watched the men power-cleaning the structure. A most interesting time.

The whole experience will be repeated next year when we visit again - this time we shall go earlier in the year and take a trip from the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal. We cannot wait.
