I live 5 minutes from the wheel and like to go for walks around this attraction. The views of the Ochil hills near Stirling are beautiful. The boatlift is an amazing piece of engineering and is a great attraction to visit. You pay to go on the boat but not to go round the site or have a picnic with the family. Lots of free things for the kids to enjoy too.

The Falkirk Wheel lifts boats between canals which are on two very different levels and is a most interesting and quite amazing engineering concept. There are boats for tourists to ride in to experience this lift. There was a very informative and entertaining commentary along with the ride. There is also an excellent visitors' centre with explanations about the wheel's workings. Set in a park with walks to Roman remains.

The concept and engineering are outstanding. Well worth a visit. Traffic from the South and North is routed round the motorway which works well with good signposts. Stay on road till there is signpost, do not take the A9 turning. Large carparks, with some distance to walk. Remember the way, as the return is not well signposted. One is invited to enter the Information office, where i was told there were no free guides available. In fact I noticed at the side there was an excellent selection.
On exiting, turn left to the shop and cafe. Perhaps because it was a quiet day, the two assistants in the shop were deep in conversation, one filing her nails, quite ignoring a potential customer. Cafe was good. However none of the 3 doors to the canal basin could be used, as they were emergancy exits only or access to boat tours.
However, a great place to visit. Good walk to Roman Fort. Signposts do not give distances, so take a map.

Marvellous! It is a great way to spend a day out. It is worth a trip with the boat to appreciate the way this works, such a good engineering state of the art link between the two canals.
Also lots of places to walk around.

Definitively worth while to visit the Falkirk wheel, a real technical achievemnt. The venue is very well organised and the shop providing plenty to keep the family busy while waiting for the ride. The ride itself is quite short, but really meant to go up and down the wheel rather than a proper canal ride. Once aboard we were well amused/entertained from the man in charge. He certainly knew how to make people enjoy the ride.
