Took the grandchildren to the Falkirk Wheel this week and had a brilliant day out, helped by a lovely day. The boat trip was good if a little pricey, but the water play area was a huge hit as was the conventional play park. The cafe was ok for a light lunch and the wood-fired pizzas looked excellent.
Since we last visited two years ago there have been more ancillary 'attractions' added , like you can hire a segway or your children can do a bungee trampoline, but it's not really a day out. You can walk around the area or along parts of both canals but the 'boat trip' isn't really worth it since you just go up to the top , turn around and come back down once more.
The wheel is quite a feat of engineering. It is interesting to see the lochs transfer the boats from one canal to another. I highly reccommend a visit if you are in the area.
Good day out with the Grandchildren. Plenty of picnic tables and food not too expensive. We didn't get to go on the trip to the top of the wheel as you would have to book in advance. All in all a good day out.
You have to pay to park your car but the rest is free unless you want to take a boat ride. The wheel is an amazing engineering device to raise boats or barges through the lock. I assume it was invented because of the huge difference in the height of the canals. You can watch the wheel in action raising and lowering boats, quite breath taking. Lots of play areas and activities for little ones.
