“Nice staff, pleasant stay”
Reviewed 30 August 2012

Our first impression was very good, we had a very friendly welcome. The reception areas are comfortable and fairly smart. The room itself was a little dark and there was too much furniture for the room - we had to move a table chair to fit our daughter's little blow up bed in. We were on the north side of the hotel and it was very dark, but on the plus side it was also very quiet. As noted elsewhere the decor is very tired, you can see this particularly in the bathroom. I wouldn't pay the full price for the hotel for this reason (we won a competition to Knockhill races and the hotel stay was paid for by the company running the competition).

Money has clearly been spent on the tvs and beds (the one in our room was huge!), and if you're used to sleeping on an orthopaedic mattress, then that would be fine, but I'm afraid it was just too firm a surface so I didn't get a great night's sleep. Surprisingly the pillows are also quite flat.

We had a mixture of the buffet and cooked breakfasts in the morning and these were fine (although all the toast was slightly singed). Checkout was quick, friendly and efficient.

We stayed at the King Malcolm for a few days in July last year on a Peel Hotel Gold Voucher and enjoyed it so much we went back again this year. The food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Last year we explored Edinburgh & visited The Royal Yacht Britannia. This time we visited the parks, Abbey & Palace in Dunfermline; explored the villages of the East Neuk of Fife and visited St Andrews. We couldn't resist going back to the Royal Yacht Britannia too. We fully intend to go again next year but stay for longer as there is still much to see and do in the area.

I stayed here on a golfing holiday, its a purpose built hotel and to be honest could do with some money being spent on it as its a little tired.

The rooms are not what you would call big, but are big enough and are warm and clean, the rooms had everything you need including large LCD TV's and very good beds.

The staff are very helpful, we had a few rooms made to doubles instead of twins and were corrected very quickly, nothing was too much trouble, the food was really good as was the breakfast.

If you can get good cheap rates I would certainly recommend this hotel for cheap and cheerful accommodation.

Room Tip: Rooms 214, 216, 218, 220, 222 have Sky TV

Don't be put off by the exterior of the hotel, which is uninspiring. The rooms were clean and big enough for our weekend break ( some sky tv channels included) .The staff were very fiendly. We stayed on a Peel hotel gold package which offers excellent value for money. Mark at reception was extremely helpful and gave some useful tips on where to go. As parking in Edinburgh is a problem we were going to go in by train but Mark told us about the express bus. This was only £5.20 return to the city centre and the bus stop was yards from the hotel, as there are bus priority lanes the journey took only 30 minutes and was hassle free. There is nothing of interest within walking distance of the hotel. The hotel is a few minutes drive to the South of Dunfirmline City centre and the Carnegie parks, the Abbey etc..We spent a few hours at Queenferry.

We had a nice room with shower and bath, the evening meal in the restaurant was good and the waitress friendly.
A computer was available near reception to use for checking emails etc.
All in all a good base for touring and visiting edinburgh.

This must be the friendliest hotel we've stayed at - and we are world travellers! Right through from the reception staff to the restaurant staff to the cleaners -all made us feel that we were valued guests. Alex at reception insisted on taking our (small) case to our room when we arrived, then as well as showing us the shortest way to the Forth road bridge for our return, also went online to check on the traffic conditions!
Heather, also reception, came outside to show us where the nearest bus stop was to get to town, assured us that if we happened to be late for breakast 'we can always rustle something up'. The restaurant meals were excellent, again serned with a smile.
And by the way, Dunfermline is really worth a visit!
