Been twice to Gilvenbank for food.after my second unfortunate visit will not be back. Went on a Sunday and wondered why it was quiet, others clearly feel the same....

Over priced poor food. First time was a christmas work lunch so reasoned the awful food was based on the mass catering. However after a second attempt, won't be back.

I was promised a lovely Sunday roast, what I got was tough flavourless meat, dry tasteless dirty boiled potatoes, solid carrots and a weird side of vinegar onions and shop bought greasy but hard roast potatoes(and that's me being kind)

For the price you expect better than average pub food, what you get is poor food none of it clearly home made. Pudding very poor least if your going to buy it in buy good stuff in. The chocolate torte consisted of doughy past rye with artificial tasting chocolate, wish it had not bothered.

Shame as service and staff good, surroundings pleasant, could be so good with some effort in the kitchen and decent food going out.

We arrived about 3:30pm for the Sunday Menu. http://www.gilvenbankhotel.co.uk/wheelens_sunday_menu.pdf
A wide choice available. Drinks arrived quickly. I started with the Mushrooms on Toast, which was very enjoyable. My wife had the Sweet & Sour Chicken Spring Rolls which also were quickly polished off. For the mains, my wife had the Steak Pie which she described as tender and tasty. My main course was the Breaded Haddock, which came with a generous portion of chips etc. I too found this very tasty. I was up for a sweet and had a very pleasant chocolate cake served with vanilla ice cream. The food, for a gastropub, could not be faulted. The service deserves a special mention as all the waitresses and bar staff were friendly, attentive and chatty. Special praise to our waitress, Kimberley who was a gem. We will be back.

...just thought I'd write this review based on a few visits to the Gilvenbank Hotel for a meal. Living fairly local I've had a few meals here and have not had a bad one, the food is good and appears to be cooked from fresh rather than nuked in a microwave. The restaurant staff and the bar staff are always quite pleasant and attentive. As previously stated it's quite local so will continue to go along for a meal and / or drink.

Extremely disappointed by a recent visit to gilvenbank based on its high quality local reputation. Too much meal is provided that what could feasibly be consumed. In the days of high food bank usage service establishments have to be more aware of the socially conscious consumer, in this case all adults meals had high amount of food wastage which was unnecessary. The meal was average and more thought needs to be placed on the menu presentation, e.g. Fried chips Are as standard with majority of salad dishes and much of the additional servings are unnecessary and uncoordinated to meals offered!!!! On three separate occasions the waitress who seemed more interested in her vanity got the serving wrong and we had to remind other serving staff (who were all hardworking) to bring out forgotten items. It felt more like a production line than a service experience. Be sure not to be placed near the door when served, both smoking and cold temperature were distracting. The kids deserts were majorly disappointing and little or no presentation were made in the serving. Moreover, No effort was made to offer hot beverages post meal. Cost per meals is comparable with similar establishments locally. With the modern flush exterior and interior you should expect more than the ripped and cheaply laminated and entertainment menus. Severely disappointed as it was a family member paying as a treat, and had it been myself I would have dally asked for a reasonable bill reduction and subsequently will not be back for a meal anytime soon.

I went for a meal with a relative for a catch up. Very impressed with the service, food and friendly staff. Three courses each all fantastic value. My aunt had a lovely looking steak sandwich, I went for nachos. We both had a starter and gorgeous dessert, (Apple crumble was fab) with 2 soft drinks and 2 courses the bill came to £20. Cannot wait to return. Brilliant lunch and plenty of choice. Highly recommended!
