Reviewed 7 November 2009

Attending wedding celebration in evening. The very large building was built over 200 years ago and has had many owners including the Local Authority. Surrounding grounds shared with golf club - quite an outlook. Does need a little improvement on outside and a bit tired inside but where would you start as it would cost a fortune.
Friendly staff at reception and went to room on second floor. Ok the stairs squeaked but really not a problem. Room was clean with superking size bed. Shower was over the bath and seen better days but functional. TV not flat screen but again worked. Pictures not screwed to walls as modern hotels.
Went to Bar Restaurant for late lunch. Excellent food for around £10 per person .
Average wine £3.50 per glass.
Wedding reception held in conservatory extension. Functional but again a bit tired
Breakfast following morning tasty and freshly cooked to order. Menu included porridge, cereals, fruits, eggs[ all ways], haddock, and usual suspects of sausage, bacon , black pudding etc . Really anything you wanted.
Did not pay a fortune [Wedding rate] so not unhappy.

This has to be one of the worst places ive been to for a wedding. For the outside u would have high expectations. Anyway when u arrive at other hotels after the cermoney you are greeted and shown where to go, not on the occassion, so went into the bar area and waited, decided to order food since we had no idea how long we would be there for. Next the meal, lovely food but if u want your potatoes with your pudding then ur sorted. I had steak pie which was meant to be with vegetables and potatoes, a young lady handing out potatoes, had 3 left in her dish so dumped the dish on our table and never bothered to come back, no one came near to ask if everything was ok etc. Awful service.
Next the reception, 2 people on the bar to cater for 100 people, very slow. Overall, i wouldn't reccomend this place to any bride and groom to be its terrible!

I remember the Dunnikier House from childhood to now (almost 50 years) so have seen many changes. I was visiting family in the area with my 2 young children and our wee Westie, Arriving late the staff coud not have been more helpful, accomodated us at the bar with dog late on and provided perfectly adequate wine (although a warmer red and more choice may have been nice.) Mac the Westie was fussed over too and scraps brought to feed him, with an offer of sandwiches for the kids too
For;- welcoming, friendly, a fantastic lobby with a massive open fire and huge sofas. nice bar area, lovely view across playing fields etc. Fantastic breakfast, and other guests had recommended lunch and dinner, although we didn't have time to indulge. WiFi on top floor was nice
Against:Nice big room, but a bit tired and in need of a renovation. Small green bath and a white washbasin, shower didn't work and by the time we figured it out we had no hot water left for a bath and so had a 'cold one' after which we couldn't get the chainless plug out. Only 2 towels for 3 of us, and one carton of milk. However on mentioning-all of this it was rectified. Two flights of stairs with dog, luggage and kids a bind, but do-able. Housekeeping left our rubbish in bag on floor, although this was not a huge prob, having worked in housekeeping myself I have pretty high expectations. The television didn't get great reception and only terrestrial channels. Outside, especially around the back, there was litter and broken glass and it was pretty drab, but I don't think the hotel have much control, as the local golf club is there too. Huge comfy bed but only 3 firmish foamy pillows. I think renovations are working their way upstairs, but we were on the top floor and so probbaly last for a refit
All in all we actually enjoyed our stay as thefantastically friendly staff and brilliant brekky more than compensated. I am hoping the new owners make a real go of this place and certainly we will be back on our frequent visits to the town.
Special mention to the Night Porter and our breakfast waitress.........really really helpful and would love to leave a massive tip, but we used all our money getting and staying here!

Stayed overnight at the Dunnikeir after a wedding. This old mansion was built in 1793, so is a bit tired if you are looking for something "yuppie".
For:- wedding meal was really great, and evening buffet was excellent. Staff very friendly and attentive. Breakfast was of very high quality in terms of food used and new chef knew just how to cook it. Open LOG FIRE in reception--well say no more. Separate venue for evening reception, so other guests not annoyed with disco noise. Very old paintings and carved wooden fireplace gave one the impression of being "The Laird"
Very large comfy bed and cosy once your in. Massive bath!!!
Against::- Yes, the rooms are tired but clean, and furniture is nearly new pine. Floor boards creak something awful. central heating inop, but fan heater in place.
Overview:- Present owners just been there for a year and new chef is trying (and succeeding) to take the dining experience up a few gears. This very old mansion would cost a "bankers bonus" to modernise, but give the folks half a chance, and im'e sure improvements shall be made. There is a limit to what you can do with these prestigeous old properties without spoiling their charm, which is what many people patronise the place for.

  • Liked — Staff, food and log fire.
  • Disliked — no lift, floorboards.

I travel all over the UK on business. As a woman on my own I like a Hotel which feels safe and friendly. This Hotel does both. Lynne the Manager is what a Manager should be. Kind, courteous and open to Feedback. OK, the Hotel is being upgraded and is a little tired at the moment but it is comfortable, set in nice grounds and the staff are amazing. I would recommend.

We booked this hotel based on the three stars from the scottish tourist board and the AA, however, the hotel has changed hands and the standard was appalling! The food was barely edible in the evening and i am sure no chef would dare to present it, they had turned off the central heating because they had painters and carpet fitters in - so it was cold and smelt horrible. The bedrooms were tired and off course cold, but they had put small heaters in them, the real joy was the bathroom, this had no heating so when i came to have a shower in the morning it was freezing in there and just to top it off the shower was scolding hot - even with the cold tap on - so i had to have a Swedish bath! Even though there were only two other people there for breakfast the service was terrible, the one waitress disappeared only to re-appear with my poached egg - i use the term loosely - This was not cooked and the white was still runny - by this time i have had enough but had i wished to complain i would have to try and find the waitress first! So i take my complaint to the front desk, were with every complaint i am meet with 'but we were taken over 10 weeks ago.' I am told i have to pay for the full amount including the dinner - again i use this loosely - and am informed the manager is not in and would have to speak to them, they will phone no later than 11 - as you might guess i am still waiting!

This was booked through Laterooms as a stop off up to St. Andrews.
The staff were friendly on arrival. Unfortunately, the room was so tired our hearts sank when we walked in. The window in room 12 is a health and safety hazzard. The bathroom was very disappointing. The hotel is set near a golf course and a park and has great potential. Sadly, the whole hotel could do with an upgrade.
Quality of the breakfast was good. The staff were friendly and efficient.

  • Liked — Was an ideal stop midway between Edinburgh and St. Andrews
  • Disliked — The room quality
