“Handsome old townhouse hotel, great stay!”
Reviewed 4 June 2006

We came to Kirkcaldy for a short midweek stay and are determined to come back to the Victoria Hotel at a later date for a longer one.

The Victoria is a smallish, comfortable hotel a short walk (ten minutes or so) from Kirkcaldy town center and the Kirkcaldy beach promenade. Rooms are small but comfortable. The hotel staff are extremely courteous and helpful. The food in the hotel is excellent: dinner there was surprisingly high-end for a place with such an old-fashioned feel, and the service was terrific. Breakfasts are generous, and "cooked" breakfasts featuring black pudding and haggis (if you really want them!) are included in the room rate. The hotel takes all the usual credit and debit cards (particularly Maestro, which is becoming increasingly useful for international travel). Meals and snacks are also served in the hotel bar.

Please note that because of its lack of elevators / lifts, and stairs to be climbed, this hotel isn't suitable for people in wheelchairs or with other similar physical-accessibility issues.

Something special to note: The Victoria Hotel was built by furniture-maker A. H. Macintosh for his family, who lived there from the 1860s until the 1940s. The public rooms of the hotel are full of beautiful examples of his (or his workmen's) carving, mostly done in golden oak, with every design unique. You can spend entirely too much time just staring at all this carved wood and wondering at the workmanship... You can see a Flickr photoset of some of the woodwork, stained glass, and other details here: -----------

Anyone looking for a comfortable base in Kirkcaldy should consider the Victoria Hotel. It is well-located about ten minutes' walk from the town centre and such attractions as the Adam Smith Theatre. It's easy to find when arriving by road or rail and there's ample car parking at the rear.

It's an old building, once a large private home, and it retains many original features. The rooms are comfortable (if a little on the warm side during my stay) and clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were good and service was excellent. It is very good value; if located in more popular tourist areas these rooms would command a price at least 50% higher. All in all, it can be safely recommended.

Just came back from a 2 day business trip. This must be one of the best hotels in Scotland. Excellent food & accomodation. Friendly staff nothing is to much trouble for them. The larger hotel chains would benefit from sending their staff to this hotel to learn how it should be done.

The Victoria Hotel was the ideal base for a group of nine discerning young gentlemen to sample the delights of the Kirkcaldy social scene. As the organiser I was nervous of booking a Hotel 'blind' but the good review I'd read by a previous visitor was spot-on. Good breakfast, decent rooms, decent price and very friendly staff, especially Bob the night porter lead me to think I couldn't have picked anywhere better.

This is what every hotel should be like. Friendly staff, nice rooms, and excellent food. When we arrived the porter helped us take our bags to our room, and then refused a tip. One of our bags arrived late from the airport, and the same porter delivered it to our room, and again declined a tip. Later in the day, we were about to leave the hotel to do some shopping in town, and he saw our five year-old daughter, and gave her a pound to buy candy. This is the only hotel I have ever been in where the staff gave the guests money! The room was lovely, and had a good supply of free cookies for the tea/coffee/drinking chocolate supplied. There were also two types of complimentary bottled water- still and sparkling. We only booked for the one night, and decided to dine in the hotel. The food was outstanding, and very reasonably priced. If you are ever in Kirkcaldy, this is definitely the place to stay. In fact the next time we visit Edinburgh we are going to book this hotel, and take the train into the city(it's only a half-hour trip).
