“YOU CAN'T ALWAYS PICK A GOOD ONE”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 July 2014

My wife calls me a coffee geek. I have a proper bean grinder and espresso machine at home and the first thing I like to do when I need a caffeine hit when I’m away from home is to check out the local coffee shops or brew bars. (Not Starbucks, Café Nero or Costa Coffee).

St Andrews has several that looked ok. Didn’t try them all. Only two. Chalk and cheese as the saying goes.

A lot of coffee shops have big commercial espresso machines. A lot of coffee shops, sadly, can’t use them properly.

Unfortunately, this was one of them. Had the staff ever had barista training to use such a machine? Didn’t seem like it. Very hot and wet is the nearest I can get to complementing them. Too hot for coffee and too strong. Wasn’t cheap either.

Although the folding frontage was open as the weather was good, and it looked the business from across the street, it turned out to be atmosphere-less and through the back was dark and dingy.

My wife’s report about the toilets wasn’t encouraging either.

What a pity

Hello,

Thank you for leaving feedback! Regarding the coffee, i feel that what we are currently offering is ok..however i am aware that it needed improving. As it happens i am just back from Holland where 2 of the team have just completed the SCAE Intermediate Barista course to enable us to bring things up to excellent standard. We are in the process of retraining after learning, and are seriously upgrading both equipment and our coffee offering with the introduction of a Slow coffee menu too. I would love for you to return and give us some feedback if you are back in St Andrews, but also if you are here again another place to try here for excellent coffee is Taste in North Street.

Lisa

“Truly amazing service.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014 via mobile

Lovely local independent cafe in the centre of st.andrews which caters for both locals and tourists with a great service, great coffee and great food. I've noticed that they also provide opportunities for people with barriers to employment which I take my hat of to the owner Lisa for helping them better their achievements in life. Great place. Will be back.

“you can do better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 May 2014

My husband and I stopped for coffee at this cafe. The whole experience was pretty average. I mean, it was OK but not great. My mint tea was decent, but my husband's cappucino tasted like nescafe. The decore of zest is really boring and there's no ambience. This is not a place we'd go back to.

“Lovely stop for lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 March 2014

We stopped here whilst in St Andrews with family yesterday, i went for soup and a sandwich, the soup was home-made tomato and basil which had a kick of chilli, it was lovely, especially on a cold day like yesterday. We had our little boy with us who is only 14 months and the staff were so helpful and catered for him too.
Food came quickly and the staff were very friendly. Really don't agree with some of the reviews below, its a lovely little cafe and will definitley be stopping here again when visiting St Andrews

“Disappointing venue for lunch”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2014

The menu is quite basic and didn't give much detail. When we approached counter to ask about availability to order a plain ham and cheese sandwich or was it only small selection of sandwiches left in fridge we were told yes(?) - had to ask again could we have basic ham and cheese made, had to wait on answer then told on this occasion it was ok as kitchen was quiet - she then produced a pre wrapped ready made ham and cheese sandwich from kitchen. We ordered the pre wrapped ham and cheese panini, one bowl of soup and two coffees - cost £11.50, soup and sandwich advertised at £4.99, no receipt issued on payment. Soup arrived 10 mins before panini - it was cold and bland. The owner/,
Manageress 'Lisa' sat at table beside us and was on phone whole time discussing invoice/delivery queries with suppliers and speaking to members of staff re issues with toilet doors - meanwhile the female member of staff who served us proceeded to clean the gents toilets - no rubber gloves in sight at counter, on entering toilets or on returning to counter!
We would have complained but 'Lisa' spent 5 minutes slating a previous customer to another employee (he complained about toilet door sticking -it does)
When we got up to leave the male assistance who came to clear the table thanked us for coming but never thought to ask why the soup was untouched, half sandwich left or coffees half full!
St Andrews has lots of lovely places to eat - so avoid this one and head to pub 2 doors down.

Thankyou for your comments we will take these on board. To address some of your issues firstly the "pre-wrapped" panini, we make all of our sandwiches/baguettes every morning and yes wrap them then put them in the display fridges so that it is much quicker for our customers in a hurry. They are not bought in, and i don't see a problem with this. We keep our menu simple with a selection of sandwiches/baguettes/bagels/baked potatoes/soups as we have a small kitchen and it keeps service quicker for our customers.. again i feel a good thing. However when it is busy..yes we may sell out, but we do our best to guestimate what will be needed in the morning when making everything.

The issue with your order.... well as you said it is a "soup & sandwich deal" however you ordered " ham & cheese Panini" not a sandwich hence were charged accordingly for what was ordered. I've spoken to staff to see if this could have been communicated to yourselves better, or have signage in place to show difference. With 200 customers a day through the shop who mostly don't want order receipts it is greener for us not to issue them however are happy to do so upon request.

Personally i think it is a good thing for me to do my work in the shop, the regulars customers like it and i am on hand to fix any problems (like bathroom doors) or your issues if you had said.

Regarding the gloves, they are kept in a cupboard in the bathrooms so you wouldn't see the staff wearing them. We don't use them behind the counter as it is less hygienic to use gloves instead of regularly & thoroughly washing hands (as agreed by Environmental Health).... people wearing gloves do not wash hands or change those gloves as often as they should. However you would not know this unless you worked in a food environment, but always happy to explain or discuss!

I hope that clears everything up for you, we are sorry if you did not enjoy your experience with us but would love to have the chance to rectify that!
