“Perfect treat for our Parents”
Reviewed 27 February 2011

I booked Rusacks as a treat for our Parents. I dropped into the hotel with champagne etc and Reception were happy to arrange for them to go into the room. I mentioned that it was a 60th birthday treat and was delighted to hear they were upgraded on arrival to a room overlooking the 18th! They loved the view and said dinner and breakfast were both delicious.
Thank you for making their stay a memorable one.

Hotels in St Andrews command a premium simply because of their location. Some work hard to justify that premium and some do not – Rusacks falls somewhere in the middle

I get to stay there occasionally and so have limited experience of what they have to offer, but other than the staff they do not have a lot to recommend.

First, they charge for internet access. Hotels will eventually realise that this is going to drive away customers and will stop, but in the interim they will simply drive away customers. Internet access is part of life today, except in premium hotels who winkle from you every penny they can. Rusacks just keeps on keeps winkling.

Second, breakfast charges. £15 for breakfast? If there was a whole ox on the menu, or perhaps a selection of unusual haggis and several vintages of Irn Bru then £15 might be acceptable –but for an ordinary hotel breakfast? Starbucks is just a few minutes away.

Third, the price is simply ridiculous for what they have to offer. And the premium elements are ill thought out. Stay in one of the cheap rooms and one finds things that would make a professional hotelier weep. In room ironing board? Sure, add one and take away 15% of the hanging space in the tiny wardrobe to accommodate it. New shower heads? Sure, but add them in such a way that it is impossible to turn on the shower without getting soaked. Need two chairs and a small coffee table? Sure, but add them in such a way that it is only possible to access the bed from one side unless one of the party is a gymnast. Frankly it looks like the owners have read a checklist of expectations and shoehorned them in. With a long handled shoehorn to provide the leverage.

Finally, avoid rooms 228 and 229 – on the front of the hotel with sash windows that appear to have been designed by an acoustic specialist in a manner that amplifies every noise from the street, and just underneath the hotel cold water tank to allow the occupant to enjoy the sound of replenishment as the early starters in the hotel wake in the morning.

Despite this is it hard not to like the hotel. The staff do try hard to please despite the handicaps foisted upon them by Macdonald hotels. They are unrelenting in their politeness and helpfulness and really do try to do whatever they can to make your stay pleasant.

In summary, don’t try to skimp by getting a cheap brokerage deal and the prospect of a poor room, be prepared to go to Starbucks for breakfast, pick up a free wifi site in town and you will be ok.

We have just spent two night at the Rusacks and cannot praise it highly enough! We paid for our B&B with our Teso vouchers so did not expect a room with a fab view and we did not get one. The room was very spacious with a large bed. The ensuit was also spacious with plenty of good quality towels. The barman in the conservatory bar was excellent as were the girls in the dining room. They knew it was my husbands birthday and put a candle into his cheese and sang Happy Birthday! Early nice touch. The girls on reception gave us a lovely welcome and a hearty farewell. The hotels location is perfect and we enjoyed a walk along the beach as well as a walk round the golf courses. The town is a two minute walk away. We had a fabulous few days and can recommend the hotel highly enough.

Rusacks is first and foremost a golf themed hotel, with photos and memorabilia in every room. But don't worry if (like us) you are not a golfer as the hotel has plenty of plus points like the great views, good food and friendly staff. There is a choice of restaurants - a more formal one and the downstairs bistro. We dined at the latter which was good value. The car park is a bit tight when the hotel is full and sometimes you need to double park and leave your keys. However this was a minor issue and would certainly not stop us going back

Stayed at a few of the MacDonald hotels in Scotland. they are normally pretty expensive but you can usually get an off peak deal in winter but any sort of deals at Rusacks, St Andrews have escaped us for years now. However we finally got a brilliant 2 day B/B and evening meal last week. The hotel is super, right on the lane at the 18th fairway of the Old Course.
Everything is 'period' and top quality from the room to the stair carpets and dining room. The meal in the restaurant was 5 star and for breakfast we were sat in the bay window with a view of the 18th hole that you just couldn't buy during a golf tournament there. All the staff were brilliant, typically Scottish, kind and witty. Can't say enough about this hotel. Might be a long time till a deal comes round again, but will keep looking.

Great hotel, staff very attentive without being overbearing. Breakfast was outstanding and the view over the 18th and beach was just a great end to the stay!

Handy hotel near the eighteenth hotel. Nice clean rooms comfortable bed. Has a bit of a dated feel with the carpets but no complaints. £59 online on one website. Bill was £64 and £2 for paying by credit card. Room service breakfast was £14 so passed. Other website insisted on a two day stay for the same daily charge. Service was professional
